Title: Holes in the hands.
Post by: Jr. Yates on February 12, 2006, 11:51:57 AM
Training back is my favorite day, But it is by far the worst on the hands! I don't use straps unless i have to....and i have a pair of gloves just in case but i've always been one of those idiots that say oh gloves are for pussys blah blah. But yesterday my hand was bleeding like crazy..i didn't even notice, it was at the end of my workout..i only had a few sets of deads left and I had this huge hole in my hand...so i had to wear one glove. i think it was from the chalk though..next time im only goning to put the chalk on my fingers not palm.

dont use chalk ur grip will get worked so much so quickly you wont need straps. i actually wear thick gloves and a smooth thick bar to help forearms. padre pio

no, that was probably from not apllying enough chalk. think about why u use chalk in the first place. Gloves definitely help when there is no chalk. I also use paper towels I wrap around the bar when I dont have gloves or chalk.

Some guy's have use household sponges in their  hands for DL, row's, Hi-pulls, etc. And back to the kitchen again, some have used heavy pot holders. After a period of heavy DL'ing thick callous should develop around the pad of the hand giving a tougher layer of hard skin. Though when going for max efforts a few guy's will tear that callious layer off their hands.  Chalk or  rosin (pine tar base) are mosted use for heavy lifting when the grip may be a little lacking. Rosin would be better all around. If you every watched Pl'ers or olympic lifter's train they are usually covered with chalk dust from the legs to the shoulder area.
Not sure what a huge hole means but using more chalk is not the answer.  Good Luck.

I'm a germ-a-phob as it is.  I don't think I'd appreciate someone's blood all over the place.  Besides, chicks don't like rough hands.   Wear gloves.  ;) :-*

I use straps more for the fact that I can lift more weight and hold onto the weight for longer. I do occasionally do a deadlift with no straps to see how my grip is going. The problem is if I don't use straps my grip gets over worked with other back exercises and curls.

The more the grip is allowed to work under stress the more it responds and becomes stronger, usually at a very fast rate. A strong grip (including thumbs) is one of the most important survival tool given to human's and all the other primates. If the grip gives out too soon in a workout than some attention should be given to it. The more logical approach  would  be to just hold (static) a BB with 50 to 100lbs over your normal DL for a count of 10-15 seconds or so from a set pin position in a power rack, lifting boxes, supports, etc.. This not only can improve the grip but also the DL it's self. Hanging from a chinning bar with extra weight attached can help greatly with the power and endurance of the grip. One arm DL's and chins are also a outstanding way of improving the grip and rather quickly. Can also grip and hang from a over head rafter or  beam for strength, which will place extra demands on the thumbs. Though BB\DB wrist and finger curls do have their place, a heavy static hold workout would always be first.

Might try these above mentioned exercises after a normal workout, with 3 sets of 10-15 second  DL or  chinning  bar holds. Good Luck.

I had this huge hole in my hand.
Can you elaborate on this?
You must be moving some serious weight if you are tearing your skin, that or have really smooth palm skin.

well to tell you the truth...it wasn't super heavy..i did my deads at the end of my workout...i can go very heavy on my lat pulldowns and other pulldowns....my hands were already feeling hot in teh middle of my workout from all the nerling on the handles......so when i went to do my deads at the end i needed some chalk and my skin was dry i guess......the nerling just ate it...oh and for the record....i was very clean.....i cleaned the little drops myself and i didn't get any on the bar. ;)

This is a new one to me jr. Yates, I've never heard of this. The only time I put blood on the bar when doing deads is if I bust my shins, which does happen on occasion...actually it happened last week.
