Running away like scalded dogs.  He's no Bill Clinton (who always seems to help Democrats running for office).

Sen. Mark Begich, D-Alaska (Becky Bohrer, AP)

Unlike some Democratic Senate candidates, incumbent Mark Begich of Alaska is willing to say he voted for President Obama.

But he’s also found a way to distance himself from the president, who is unpopular in reddish Alaska.

“I did (vote for him), but that’s irrelevant,” Begich told the Washington Examiner. “The president’s not relevant. He’s gone in two years.”

Begich is in a tough fight with Republican Dan Sullivan.

Begich’s comment stands out because Alison Lundergan Grimes, who is in a tight race in Kentucky, has refused repeatedly to say whether she voted for Obama in 2008 and 2012. Michelle Nunn, Georgia’s Democratic Senate nominee, has said she voted for Obama but also notes he’ll only be president for two more years.

Speaking with the Examiner, Begich emphasized his disagreements with the president.

“Obama tried to take away our F-16s in Fairbanks … I disagreed with him. He wanted to fund the rebels in Syria. I disagreed with him. He wanted to do the gun control bill. I disagreed with him.”

Begich continued:

“I’ve disagreed plenty with Obama, but that’s not an issue to me. It’s where we are today, it’s the next six years. He’s gone in two. Whoever’s the next U.S. senator will be dealing with a new president. That’s the bottom line.”

She Was Asked, ‘Do You Think That President Obama Is a Strong Leader?’ Her Response Left Even MSNBC Anchors Stunned.

It’s no secret that Democratic candidates up for re-election this year have been running from being associated with President Obama amid his anemic approval numbers. It’s also no secret that while many of those candidates don’t wan’t to be associated with him, they also don’t want to be seen as abandoning their party’s leader. That has led to some awkward exchanges. Enter Kay Hagan.

Hagan, the Democratic senator from North Carlolina, was asked Tuesday by MSNBC if she thought the president was a strong leader. Her answer was a rambling circle that included a him-haw reference to Obama having a lot going on.

“You know, President Obama has a lot on his plate,” Hagan told Kasie Hunt during a piece that aired on Thursday’s “Morning Joe” show. “And it seems like, whether it’s the oil spill that took place earlier, a number of years ago in the Gulf, to this Ebola crisis now, to ISIS gaining strength, I mean, you look at all the combination of things like that.”

“Do you think he’s acted as a strong leader in those crises?” Hunt interrupted.

“You know I think there’s definitely–  Like with Ebola, we have definitely been late to the table in making decisions about that, being sure that CDC has a, has a– understands and gets messages out to hospitals,” she said.

“So you don’t think he’s shown strong leadership?” Hunt recapped.

“Certainly there are issues where I certainly think no,” she finally responded.

When the camera cut to the MSNBC hosts, they seemed baffled.

“These are not hard questions to answer,” Joe Scarborough quipped. To which Hunt responded, “Sometimes the simplest questions are the hardest.”

Watch below:

The clip is reminiscent of Kentucky’s Alison Lundergan Grimes refusing to answer if she voted for Obama.

Hagan is currently locked in a tight battle with Republican Thom Tillis, whom she leads by a minuscule 1.6 points according the Real Clear Politics average.

Sen. Mark Begich: Obama is 'not relevant'
I listened to Rush Limbaugh on Thursday... he spent ten straight minutes telling us why obama is STILL VERY RELEVANT.

He can still do a TON of damage.  He said it's dangerous for repubs to just discount obama as something to forget about, as something not to worry about.

I dunno if Rush was reacting to this article or not.   But he said the minute we take our eyes off obama, boom, we have ten million new residents who all vote dem, thanks to amnesty.

Top Democratic strategists are blasting President Barack Obama for putting the Democratic Party in a precarious position heading into the midterm elections.

"It's puzzling--and to the Kay Hagans of the world, infuriating--the number of times President Obama has stepped in it, repeatedly reminding voters that a vote for Hagan is a vote for Obama's policies," Democratic strategist Christy Setzer told The Hill.

Another individual whom The Hill describes as a "top Democratic strategist" groused about Obama golfing this past weekend instead of helping Democrats.

"He and his team could have made it clear a long time ago that there's nothing more important than the Senate remaining in Democratic hands in 2014," said the Democratic strategist. The strategist said the Obama White House has "already set up their defense" and is "laying the predicate down for the blame to come. It's really obvious."

The internecine rancor within Democratic ranks has grown so intense that at least one Democratic candidate says his own party is torpedoing his candidacy.

"My national party--that I'm a member of--(was) trying to drive votes to Larry Pressler [the Independent candidate] and trying to drive up my negatives," Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Rick Weiland told the Argus Leader.

Democrats' angst is eclipsed only by an angry voting electorate fed up with an unpopular president and Congress.

A new ABC News/Washington Post poll finds that seven out of ten Americans rate the Obama economy negatively.

Voters head to the polls in seven days.
