We don't even know what happened. He could have went out to meditate for all we know or those soldiers are covering their asses. Besides that, I would find it odd for him to walk off base with nothing more than a knife. And he wasn't spouting any Anti American Rhetoric....no more than any other soldier tired of dying for a puppet war and shot up full of drugs.
I could bet that if he died, the GOP and Fox News would have been all over Obama for allowing "An American POW and Hero" to die... ::)
I also stated in that same thread that he would likely be charged with "Failure to Repair" which is the lightest charge of desertation and said he was pretty stupid for walking off base. Obviously reading is not one of your strong points.... ::)
He definitely got more charges than I expected but this isn't even going to trial. He'll plea bargain, forfeit his money, and leave with an OTH discharge.

Its possible that he gets a dishonorable discharge and if the information is correct, he deserves it. However, he would be stupid not to take a plea bargain as he's already confessed to his actions.
Despite that, I still agree with Obama's decision to bring him home. He's innocent until proven guilty and of all things, I think everyone would agree that his capture and torture by the terrorist will send a great message to other soldiers. He can't be punished anymore than he already has... ;D

There's no timetable....Desertion simply is leaving an area without permission from your superior officer without the intent of returning. He did leave without permission and he did mail a number of his personal items back to his parents. However, there's no evidence that he did not intend on returning and we'll never know since he was immediately captured by the Taliban.
I think he's definitely guilty of "Failure to Repair"....a much less serious offense. However, he's not going to be charged with anything. He's going to be medically retired and that will be the end of it. Charging a guy who's been a POW by the Taliban for 5 years would never happen.....he's already suffered enough
What's most disgusting is that this poor kid just got home from 5 years of captivity in a metal cage, tortured, beaten, and God knows what and rather than some compassion...he's being treated like shit from the GOP along with his father and mother. They've been though enough stuff....I bet that his father and mother haven't slept well for years. Just imagine the stress they had.

President Donald Trump has called Bergdahl a “no-good traitor” who “should have been executed.”
The decision by the 31-year-old Idaho native leaves open whether he will return to captivity for years — this time in a U.S. prison — or receive a lesser sentence that reflects the time the Taliban held him under brutal conditions. He says he had been caged, kept in darkness, beaten and chained to a bed.
Bergdahl could face up to five years on the desertion charge and a life sentence for misbehavior.
