Very nice.  I looked up Gehrig's numbers today after thinking about the Final Four vote....video game numbers.  Unreal.

The unfortunate part is you are probably looking at a 3,000 hit guy, 40 or 50 more home runs and 200 or 300 more games tacked onto his streak if he doesn't come down with that terrible disease.

Yeah......

Not the same health wise, but I think about Williams' & Dimaggio's time lost due to the armed forces too....

Yeah that definitely cost Williams 3000 hits.

He lost some really prime years...24,25 and 26 years old.

Hard to imagine The Greatest Hitter of All Time not passing the 3k barrier.

i think gehrig's numbers would have been even better, as far as williams he missed about 6 years to the service and injury in his prime, plus he drew a large amount of walks due to his superior eyesight 20-10 in both eyes. dimaggio missed less time but his feet failed him early. willie mays missed all but 37 games over 2 seasons due to the service.... the two years he came back he hit 41 and 51 hrs=92...add that to his 660 and ..????????

Nice. Wore my Gehrig jersey today. And the old-timey Yankees cap with the short brim. People love the cap.

Yeah, those caps are cool.

I've be riling up some old timers at another site on the "final four" ASG voting.  I think Jeter belongs in the top four Yankees ever, despite the crazy stupid numbers put up by Ruth/Gehrig/Dimaggio/Mantle.

There's also Berra and Mariano too......truth is there's no really good answer, and if you go on #'s alone, those four deserve it.

I'm not a numbers guy like you, but I look at Ruth and Gehrig and, what they did in an un-aided manner, is just insane. They just stepped up, and knocked the shit out of everything. Stunning. No excuses.

Exactly.  But, the competition they were playing against built skyscrapers in the offseason, waited in line to eat soup, and like had tuberculosis.  Someone from this era is worthy.

But the problem is they were just soooo good.

Good point. Nostalgia is powerful. Maybe in a few years I'll be a Honus Wagner guy.

I'm reading a book on the most overrated & underrated players in baseball history.

And it picked Koufax as the most overrated lefthanded starter of all time.

Mantle was a (too) nice guy, but he hated Dimaggio. That knee thingy, and all. What a prick.

JOE DIMAGGIO was a tremendous ball player could do it all.and #'s like stated due to war were hurt overall...as a person he was prickly, cheap, and lived off anyones dime 'free rooms.dinners, suits tailored for him'his name attached meant something to people ,his persona being dressed and groomed to the 9's was admirable for his era.he signed nothing unless $$$ was attached.he had bad relationship with his son, marilyn Monroe hurt him even tho he respected her well after her death..i read 2 books on him and he was painted exactly as I posted here plus more I didn't write here.i know someone who knew him and this guy was mentioned in the book as well personally,,joe signed his book.he said he was tough guy to get close too..people loved to shake his hand tho...

Great pic. Hard to think of Gehrig beyond the Gary Cooper portrayal, but he was a big bohunk (no racist/homo). Got a nice #4 jersey, and hat in the cedar chest. Legend.    :)
