Four people have been killed in a shootout at a Roma camp in north-eastern France, police say.
Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve told reporters those killed "in cold blood" included a six-month-old baby, a man and a woman.
Reports said a police officer died from his wounds shortly after the incident. Another policeman was injured.
The violence took place in the northern town of Roye, about 110km (70 miles) north of Paris.
It is unclear what provoked the incident.
Witnesses told the AFP news agency that a fight broke out in the camp and one of the men involved began shooting when police arrived at the scene.
The gunman was said to be in a serious condition after being shot by police.
The local Courrier Picard newspaper reported that security forces had sealed off the area.
President Francois Hollande and Prime Minister Manuel Valls expressed shock over the incident.
"My thoughts are with the families, with the victims and the policeman killed in the service of France," Mr Valls tweeted (in French).
In a statement, Mr Hollande hailed the "courage and commitment" of the police officers who responded to the incident.

Most gypsies(roma) are scum, most of them dedicate themselves to thievery, scamming, begging & robbing. And they are proud of doing this, the heavy/elite Gypsies run illegal brothels, human trafficking, enslavement & drugcartels.
Here in Sweden they practically are begging at every food store or popular places, and in many incidents they rob old and young people. Making night-outs very unsafe for innocent kind people.
Their camps are pure filth and full of excrement and garbage.

Our french gypsy are the most miserable form of life, almost as miserable than arab.
High level of inbreeding, incest, living in camp cutt off from the rest of the world, high degrees of aggressivity, stealing, swindling, and doing all the form of larceny as a way of life.

They have a big problem with gypsies rigth now in the country where my summerhouse is, sweden and the autorithys doesnothing...they have taken over big parts of parks and land (even private land) and buildnthere little ghettis there and the cops say they cant do anything...in the park in malmoe they wvwn used the kids outdoor kindergardem as a toilet. They live in santitarian hazads cause its shit and garbage everywhere. One place it cost 100k dollars for the tax payers to clean up....they have taken private land and even aummerhouses and when the owners asks the cops to make them go away they just say its up to the owner to get the names and social birthnumbers but they dont give it out. In malmoe the goverment even said to the owners qho had bit parts of there private land taken over that if they dont keep it cleand on the land where the gypsiws are they will get big fines
Imagine if 60-100 gypsies took over a big part of your land and build sheds and had there caravsns there and the goverment said to you that its your responsibility to clean out their shit and garbage while they lived there.
We have them infront of every store begging and i mean every store and our goverment even sometoles pays their travel home but they all come back after 2months....they have started to stay over in the winter to cause i goverment and churches and charity groups have stated to give them honws to live in in the cold....its sick and they laugh at the swedes cause they are so dumb that they belive they are so poor....all have houses anf shit but they make more money begging here then working in romania
