vw stinks!
-
Currently VW corp is #3 (might have changed since their software frauds..they will be paying out mucho bucks). They also run Audi, Bentley, Lamborghini and Porsche auto plants. Dr Porsche designed and built the first VW bug. He was also a Nazi, big time.
The make superior products, which includes Audi is very underestimated car. But here in America, the old VW bus was referred to as Hitler's revenge for losing WW2.
Toyota remains #1 in world sells.
Side Bar: I drive a Ford F150 duel cab..2012.

Because of the little 25-HP engines.
-
Yes....25 HP engine or whatever size that sewing machine engine was. Just took 4 bolts to remove the engine.
If ever caught behind a VW bus, driving on a even slight mountain grade or have one driving in the fast lane, going 45mph you would understand.
The older ones did make a excellent surfing wagon. All the weight in the back made it easier to go through sand, etc. If headers were added and the timing gears adjusted...much improvement. Went to baja a few times for surfing, a 100 miles from nowhere.. Had to push or lift the back end up a few times.....but worked fairly well. And easy on gas than.

They upped the power as they went, but the original engine was 25 hp, so I can imagine it would suck finding one ahead of you on the road. Even with the later ones, I think about 60 horsep was highest they could spare.
But they can be made to have very respectable power w higher displacement and the rest (esp. type I). I like them.

vw stinks!
VW sell very well in Europe and China.
American's don't like them because they're precision designed to go 100,000 mile then completely fall apart. I would love to lease a VW then return it right before it imploded.

Safari windows rule!
My late brother had a '57 Oval Window Bug with pull back rag top and a tubed radio. 36 HP. Have always wanted a Ghia or Square-back or a Thing or Camper or a bus like that shown or...Well, you get the idea. VW's are sweetness.
-
Doesn't VW also own Audi and Porsche? The latter two sell well and bring high profit margins! 8)

Oh, yeah. 57 are nice. They can still be seen around the south and west once in awhile. Always great to see the Pope's nose and oval window.
Haven't seen too many split windows outside of car shows, but you have to figure they weren't selling many bugs in America back when those were made. (pre-53 mid-year, i think)

Japs do vintage American culture better than vintage Americans. You see what they do with ratrods and choppers?
-
I want a bathtub Porsche. I also wouldn't mind a 914/6 (but would still take a four banger). One of my cousins had a 914/4 in Black Imron. I wouldn't be able to drive either though as I am unable to operate a manual anymore.

Yes, the Japs catch onto something and they do it with serious flair. I tend to like the Japanese, actually, as they seem to be the Asians who most understand the importance of general, everyday respect.
They seem to be holding their shit together as the world around them crumbles, too.

I cannot drive a stick shift transmission anymore due to an accident a few years ago and early cars such as those mentioned are stick. ;D Dammit! ;D

Is it the clutch that does it? Or trying to stay coordinated with clutch and shifter?

Yes, i love them. They keep the integrity of the roof (which is very good), yet they're "almost" as good as a convertible. When it comes down to it, I'd prefer the safety of the roof structure on a ragtop, anyway, to give a little security when flying around corners.:) Type I is one of my favorite cars to race around in.

And all it took was a ridiculously huge bomb or two.

This was the classic two-tone VW, with one paint on the doors and the adjacent panels, and the rest another paint:

That's what they did with this:

VW is crap nowadays. They were ok in the past though.
Audi good quality right into the 2000s.
Now not so much.
Reliability today?
Honda, Toyota.

I'm pretty sure VW is doing better the past few years vs early 2000's.

Yep, they're Notchback Ghias. They are unbelievably rare.
Here's one even more rare -- it's a Fastback Ghia (TC). The Porsche really shines through in these.
