Title: John Goudy Threads merged
Post by: Ursus on March 31, 2006, 08:12:42 AM
Ok well on the 26th of January i decided that it was time to get serious. I adopted a very simplistic routine consisting of the big basics. Bench squat deadlift chins and dips. The previous 6 months training had become abysmal due to serious illness and then lack of motivation. i decided I am never gonna have the opportunity to make these kind of gains again in my life so i embarked on a very simple routine where every week or 2 workouts I would increase the weight ever so slightly until i far surpassed what i was previously doing.

It entailed bench and deadlifting 3 times a week and squat about 2 though at the start i failed to take it seriously.

I started off at the following poundages, and the second group are what i guess was my max.

bench press 110kg 3x5
deadlift 145kg 3x6
squat 55kg 3x5
weighted dips 40kg 4x5
chins bw generally 5x5

bench press 116kgx5
deadlift 165kgx5
squat 65kgx5
weighted dips 55kgx5
chins 25kgx5

After some serious and fun training over the past 10weeks i have decided to start again in a similar routine though higher than i previously began at. The intention her is to surpass the weights i am at now in the bext 10 weeks. In the bench press and deadlift i have kinda plateaued the squat is going great. here is what i am at now and my predicted max's in kg's and also lbs for ya yanks.

exercise         work sets        in lbs                        predicted max

bench press    126.5kg 3x5    278.3lbs                     150kg 330lbs
deadlift          200kg 1x6       440lbs                        235kg 517lbs
squat            115kgx5          253lbs                        136kg 297lbs
chins             bw+25kgx5      55lbs+215-220lbsbw     144kg 317lb
dips               70kgx5           154lbs+215-220lbs bw   197kg 434lbs
(also never maxed on dips)
(not maxed out and i literally go ass to grass very low)

so ai am starting again and am going to disrregard the old training thread on this board and delete it and continue on this one. I intend to make some serious gains on this new routine which even contains calves, abs and biceps.

motivation today? I was doin calves and gym owner said "I never knew tweety pie worked out"

Will keep ya'll posted.

John,

Bit of unsolicited advice:
I reckon the best way to format your training thread is the following....

Exercise 1
weight x reps, weight x reps, weight x reps
Exercise 2
weight x reps, weight x reps, weight x reps

for example:
Barbell squats
135 lb x 10, 225 lb x 5, 275 lb x 3

...this keeps the posts compact and avoids huge amounts of scrolling, but allows people to see the patterns of progression by having several posts onscreen together. Hence I believe minimising the number of lines in the post is more effective than bunching the data on the left side margin.

But it's your thread, just some constructive criticism. Please feel free to delete and/or ignore this post as you see fit.

The Luke
PS-great progress thus far, tough luck about the calves. I'll pm you when I do up that calf ratio post.

No appreciate it, also makes sense too. good idea. calves still burning. Gym owner promised me that if i get up to 18.5" he will let me train free for a fortnight lol. I know its not much but this guy would not spend christmas!

I think u should seriously consider focusing on the Squat more than the deadlift. Your deads will go up with your Squats, damn it you really need to bring up your Squats bro!! If you're really serious about bringin your lifts up, and not just obsessin with deads, I think you should consider it. Just friendly suggestions..

I have to agree with haidar. Besides there is quite a bit of overlap between deads and squats. I find myself doing each once a week is enough for me.

Just a wee pic to show before and after for my calves. I will use this as a comparison pic in the next few months. I have now trained calves a total of twice and here they are cold and flexed. flame away.

Hey bro, thanks for the PM, i gave u reply aswell. What are you doing for calves mate. Theres lots of different ideas about training them, tho recurring idea i hear is about 10 of about 15 (choose couple exercises each workout) each workout, and about 3 times a week, not sure if thats true, but im gonna see.

I love the pics of that gym bro, do alot of folk use it? Looks old school, kinda gym wer it would heat up quickly and it wud just b guys there that love weights and wanna get big, awesome!!

I train at public sport centre gym, theres been good money spent on it, and has squat bar, bench couple flat benches (one that can do incline etc), lots dumbells etc and plenty machines and cardio equipment, but it is meant for fitness enthusiasts (which i am), not as much for guys wanting to get huge (which i also am).

Tons of folks use it some beasts use it tho mainly ppl who wanna keep in shape. at nights you get the beasts lol. all equitment is handmade and the plates were made in the ship yard harland and wolff where the titanic was built. the equitment is 46years old.

the place is freezing in winter though like a sauna in the summer, a tin roof you see. old rusty and you can always get a good workout in it. here is a few more pics. the place and especially the owner have a million stories to tell.

6th april

bench press in kg
45x12 85x5 116 3x5 90x16

squats in kg
45x5 70x5 85x5 100 3x5 85x10 45x10

dips in kg
20x5 40x5 60x5 65 2x5 60x5 40 2x10 20 2x15

squats felt v easy. i hurt my shoulder bone which i could feel tho it didnt detract from my workout. dips also felt easy and was extremely pumped.

regarding squats.....
if u aint goin down till ur hams are practically touching your ankles...
you arent suatting... forget that paralell foolishness...
anybody can put 405 on a barand do half reps.. i used to in the beginning...
but i didnt get great results till i dropped the weight and went deeeeep deeep down..
thats when my quads started to grow properly

3x a week Squatting, instead of 3x a week deads then, right?  ;)
You're gonna put on atleast 30 pounds on your squat in this cycle..

When going below parellel you hit your glutes more than going parellel.  Both work the quads the same amount.  There have been studies done on this, check them out....

I speak from experience. Bottom line if you want huge quads like mine go to parallel and just control the weight. 20 reppers/setters baby!

I understand that Sarcasm's "raison d'etre" is the proliferation of.... well.... sarcasm.... but dude, ripping on a hard training, dilligent natural who not only contributes to this site in a constructive manner but has the courage and integrity to vouchsafe his advice by posting his pics? Goudy is a role model for all the newbies on these boards and has earned our respect.

More at issue should be the persistent rumour that Sarcasm (if that is your real name) is actually either a non-training 120 lb fifteen-year-old, or one of 240's alter-egos.... depending on which version of the rumour you believe. Not what weight Goudy is STARTING squatting at!!!

Heybro meant to ask u this (maybe u wont know).
My calves when seen from back (like ur pics), the outside of my calfs (cant remember name) is higher than inside. Now is this just my shape or is it because im just hitting the outside harder now and that area is smaller????

Now that iv been doing seated calf work (which hits outer head) i feel them more and bigger,so hopefully they just need to catch up.

Hey davie I used to have that same problem. If you want to bring up the outside of your calfs, keep your toes close together and your heals out when you do your calf raises. Go heavy, full range of motion and higher reps.

PS: Goudy you give me great insperation everytime I do back I think Goudy!

Cheers mate, my routine Monday and friday is:
Seated calf raise 5x25
calf raise on leg press 5x15 (i keep heels in toes out here to try hit inside of calves more)
Today (wednesday) im gonna do standing calf raise (and il try it heels out).

i know im a newbie at legs but get a block to stand on and really focus on stretch.

a guy on here sed a while ago ur legs are used to stamina. they carry u about all day. so why not hit em hard and heavy with lowever reps heavier weights. just a thought.

This is true. High reps will not shock calves into growth.  Walking is the same thing.    Heavy weight and full reps, then bodyweight reps to failure.....that equals 1 set.  Then repeat 4-5 times. ;D
Also do partials...3 at the bottom 3 in the middle and 3 at the top. That equals 1 set. Repeat 4-5 times.

I always thought that calves should be worked with reps ranging from 10 to about 25??
I do seated calf raise sets with 25 reps a set.
calf press on leg press machine with reps of 20
standing db raise with reps of 15 and BB calf raises with reps of 10!

Thought that was a good range that should cover all the bases??

ok so today i was gonna rest but had to go into town for my das birthday so i decided to go to gym also. on side note shoulder feeling good. once again i started bantering with an old fella who still is strong etc saying how he cheats using straps. we were only slaggin so we decided to do t bar rows to see who could go heavier and most reps. him with straps me without.

it was very sticky and clamy and gripping was tough but we both got up to 350lb for set of 5 then decided to call it a draw. was glad. he turned a mediocre workout fun and got good pump. harrys one of those old guys with barrel chest and still pretty lean. stil wears world gym baggy over his t shirt.

i also intented to do calves but this wee challenge took over lol

squats in kg
45x5 70x5 85x5 100x5 110 2x5 85x12

t bar rows in lbs
200x5 250x5 300x5 350x5 300x10 250x12 200x15

called it a day. this week was disturbed by easter and gym being closed etc. next week ill hopefulluy be able to bench and dead again and start new cycles to take me to end of summer.

You've got virtually the same structure and proportions as Steve Reeves. Your back development is particularly good. All those deadlifts are definitely paying off.

Bring up the legs, and I guarantee that you could probably beat most juicers. I would suggest training legs 2-3 times a week, alternating leg presses and hack squats. Barbell squats are pretty overrated as a leg exercise, and you're almost guaranteed to get injured in the long run.

i duno and to be honest i dont wanna try. too many cooks etc...

also my workouts are pretty intense and i would not have the energy or time with uni etc. delts have always been good. at this stage im just trying to add mass and strength. i have no aspiratoins of bodybuilding so i dont really see the point.

they get hit and hit hard from my pressing movements and rowing.

If grip is a problem just use straps

Some will of course tell you you're a second class citizen for doing so but you're training legs, not your grip remember :)

Yep, I didn't think you did.  They save me all the time as I have a girls grip.   I may not even be able to deadlift more than 140kg without them.  Pretty annoying so the straps are a godsend.

Title: Re: John Goudy Threads merged

A deadlift done with straps isnt a 'true deadlift', and since u do train for strength primarily, that might be a problem.

Yep, I train for strength versus myself though.. not really so I can beat anybody.

Trust me, if you had my grip you'd be scratching your head too.  You'd go train legs on leg day and not even get sore because you're too busy trying to hold onto the weight.

Straps or not, as I am absolutely at my limit of grip (and then some) I would imagine I'm effectively training both my grip and my deadlift by using them.

Title: Re: John Goudy Threads merged

In my experience, most of the people who admonish strap users are themselves blessed with exceptional grip strength. They never seem to allow for differences in hand size, and/or differences in the ratios of finger length to palm length... even differences in palm breadth can affect grip strength.

Let me give you an example: I have no grip strength and am forced to use straps on heavy back exercises, deadlifts etc. However, my younger brother can crush an apple with one hand simply by closing his fingers around it. Using two hands he can shear an apple into two equally sized halves simply by twisting it. My youngest brother can't lift a 50 lb dumbbell, however he has exceptional hook grip strength... unable to do even one full pull-up, he can nevertheless hang from the pull-up bar for more than 40 mins before his grip tires to the extent that he has to drop.

Neither of my brothers has ever worked out consistently yet my weaker grip is the product of 16 years lifting... surely the differences in inherent grip strength are more to do anatomical/physiological differences than anything else. Afterall, the variation among hand shapes is much greater than the shape and size differences seen among say... elbow joints.

The Luke

Spelling correction Goudy: "CRAIC!"

That's "FUN" as Gaeilge for you uncultured American heathens. (FUN, but "in Irish")

Two cousins of mine spent a weekend in a holding cell courtesy of the NYPD having pulled over a black and white at 4am Saturday night (morning?) and slurredly asking:
"Hey lads... (hic) ...sorry, hello ossifers... where can we find the craic this time of night?"...seemingly a well reasoned request after 14 pints of Guinness (read 14 x 3 = 42 bottles of that diluted Bud shit you flag-waving bitches drink).

They passed the (urine) drug test, but the cops couldn't believe they were still standing without some chemical assistance after breathalyzing them. Apparently they were unaccustomed to the Celtic disposition (read propensity towards alcoholism) and had only seen blood alcohol levels that high in winos on PCP. Released on the Monday morning they were both technically still intoxicated, at least in a legal sense.

Still, it was all just a bit o' craic!

to get as strong as possible naturally. to continue to add size tho maintain low b/w and mobility speed etc. id say i more of a powerlifter than a bbuilder.

tho strength is primary goal follwed by a bit of size.

Front squats, going all the way down, will help you with the form on regular squats.

I have been a way a long while focusing on somethinmg which i may be good at though not excellent...Powerlifting . Won a bench competition and have qualified for the World Champs. I expect to get my ass handed to me as it is not a drug tested federation but a well at least i can say i was there.

Anyway this is the start of my new section which i will update as per usual with my pics and weights i lifted. videos will also be included via youtube as this suits most people. however the quality of pics and vids is much much better. For 9 weeks the weights will be modest and training may seem daft though i do have a plan so bear with me folks. Pics and videos starting tomorro. Once again i appreciate all your comments questions and criticisms

your routines are idiotic.....go pick up a M.D. and read all the routines and pick one that you like best.......it will help a lot.   also....it looks retarded to have such big front delts with such a small chest and tiny side/rear delts.... i suggest you stop training them and start your shoulder day supersetting shrugs and rear delts untill they are both fried to the max, then do a few different movements for side delts..   then on chest day pre exhaust with some flys and stick to dumbells because right now im sure your front delts are doing all the work.

this is only to get pling out of my head and all my trianing has been powerliudting in recent months. im bigger a bit and a lot lot denser and most importanmtly stronger. im still natural all the way. once the worlds are over i gonna focus 100pc on total natural bbuilding and c what i can make of myself. gonna put heart and soul into it and make a huge section on this dedicated to it. its all planned out.

this is not a permanant move to pling, just a pit stop. while im not 100% suited to it i am 100% suited to bbuilding so ill give it a real go. glad some one finally replied to this thread. ill def take some pics tomorro and post tomorro evening.

hey body hows things.

alexxx good to see you are still about.

one reason i aint been on getbig is cos its so big on my screen for sum reason. writing everything is big. its just so annoying ive been staying away fropm it. does anyone know how to fix it??

also i bought an ragex single ply bench shirt and can neone give me all the advice they can to get the most out of it. less than 4 weeks and id love to put up a big number.

dead is goin great prop around 250-60kg. i am only doin the bench press comp oin limerick and so have been doin 20 rep squats for legs. bench is goin great tho not sure of real number. any wuestion etc give me a bell. missed thi splace and sum one helpo me fic this screen!!!

That 150 lber at 6 ft is very impressive!

People need to take note of bodyweights and realize that a low bodyweight means you can easily  look incredible and be incredibly strong.

What are your lifts Goudy?

My bests were 370 Lb bench, 500 Ass to floor Squat, 600 lb deadlift.

I have hit those lifts in the lower 200s (207-210) and also at 235-238.

Rugbys goin ok, missed couple weeks with medial ligament strain, but had kick ass leg session today, leg raise and front squats wer great, then actually felt faint after at least 2 out of 3 of my leg press sets, + at least one of my SLDL sets, was actually pretty awesome lol. Intensity hehe.

Seems uv managed to put on more size now that uv focused more on powerlifting, do u think ur change away from just bodybuilding and to powerlifting has been the difference??

Whens ur next meet?

squadson you've owned yourself by backing this adonis stuff. you still say you weigh 230? by those standards you're a fatty fatty pig fatty. you made fun of people way bigger than adonis for so long now since the squad has to support each others' crap whether they are right or wrong (children with no confidence). how about how you'd make fun of people saying that they ate the very foods your boy endorses now? why'd you change your name anyway?

well im 19, 5'9'' down to 193, trying to cut down to 185. my bench is 315 for 1 but my form suck, squat 335 for 1 ass to the ground, deadlift 455 for 1. i enjoy bench and deads but hate squats, however after reading this site ive come to learn squats build your entire body and sence doing them heavy and deep all my other lifts have increased. my goal is to hit 315 for 10 reps on the bench and 500 for 2 on the deadlift,

im 19, wrestled my whole life so got some strength from that, ya i wa sup to 200 about 4 weeks ago but started to feel fat, plan on competing in my first pro fight in about 7-8 months depending on my progress so im starting to get my weight down and cardio up, right now im lifting only 3 days a week,
sundayi
ncline bench 5 x 5
squat 5 x 5
chin ups 4 x 8-12 (with weight)
dips 4 x 6-10 (with weight)
calf raises

tue
deadlifts 5 x 5
cling and press 5 x 5
bb rows 4 x 6-8
curls 4-8-10
shrugs 4 x 6-8

thur
flat bench 5 x 5
front squat 5 x 5
pull ups 4 x 6-10 (with weight)
skull crushers 4 x 6-10
calf raises

then i start over with deads on sunday, working out pretty good along side my other training 3 days a week

19 inches cold is awsome goudy, right now my arms are 16, and exactly 16 hopefully i can get them up to 18 one day unfortunatly i have a wide waist due to alot of heavy oblique work so even when im dieted down for a fight and my abs are popping my waist is still large i would never make it in bodybuilding.

ah i see it now. i  missed it guibber sorry.

i used to do t bars tho now stopped about 6 months ago cos i was using sloppy form and hurting shoulders.

all i do now for back is deadlifts and chins. leaner u are too gives appearance that its more developed.

any more man?

Title: Re: John Goudy: 3rd Blood.
Post by: gibberj2 on November 08, 2006, 02:50:37 PM
cool. since i've started training i've gotten wider and a little thicker lats but if i do a back double bi there's nothing. the lat spread looks much better. i noticed that my middle back on both sides of the spine going down are really flat, there's a lot of nothing.

As far as training since I work out at home now i only do barbell rows and deadlifts. I've got a bench that inclines, squat rack, preecher bench, leg extension/curl. ez bar and olympic set and dumbells.

You like many others will have certain poses that make u look better than others or show ur muscles better. Some poses might make ur chest seem non exsistent while other might make u appear to have full round chest. Just gotta keep taking pics and asking for feedback and ul find out.

Looking good bro.  I read a few magazines.......who gives a s**t what their trying to sell.  Their routines do give you some good ideas....especially when changing things up every once in a while is critical.  You cant believe everything they say or anyone else for that matter since everyone is different.  For me their a good tool for motivation.

Now Goudy, what kinda s**t you on?  ;)

Well I finally got the shit sport of powerlifting out of my system. I realised a few things.

I am not cut out for it.
I only really want to powerlift again if it is raw and unequipped.

Anyway i am pursuing natural bodybuilding. I will train as a bodybuilder, eat like one and train areas i have neglected for too long, legs calves in particular, abs and arms.

Its all planned.

In properation for that wee comp i done on sunday i trained too hard too long and thus gave myself tendonitis in both forearms and a right tricep injury which has still not healed.

For 2 weeks prior to the comp i lost nearly 6lbs due to not being able to train at all bar 12 sets of very light bench pressing (185-225lbs). currently i am traing extremely laughably light till i recover fully. there is a slight pain but i am playing it by ear and hopefully it will be better on friday than what it was yesterday.

tomorro i will try to see if i can chin again pain free as the grip is what gets me. i will also squat. all being well i will still take it very light (sets of 20) for the next week or so before upping the weight on bench press and shoulder press (currently 12ish light easy reps).

once i feel recovered over another week or 2 i will reintroduce heavy weights and i am guessing that in 3 weeks i shall be fully recovered and bigger than ever before i bodybuild.

i will update this section lots and answer as best i can. my mate Paul McIlroy is training me and he knows we will go places.

Oh here is the medal i won at that wee comp.

In this instance, you're a joke Goudy.

Why? Because you never trained for powerlifting, used some bodybuilding routine to prepare for powerlifting, and then bitched about it all.

If you want to compete in powerlifting, lift heavy weights, then train like a powerlifter.

unless it is raw and drug tested.

Congrats goudy...remember powerlifting is a lifestyle just like bodybuilding. it takes years to get good at it and not hurt yourself. i haven't had an injury yet but my wrists hurt like a bitch sometimes...

whatever you decide to do you will do well at...it's all about personal preference.

i don't know what's wrong with hedge, i thought you used a powerlifting layout the last time i checked.

IMO, a natural lifter with Goudy's frame and height won't be in his final weight class until the mid 20's-late 20's.

Goudy has the strength and height for strongman, I've stated this in the past.

To see him train for aesthetics instead of optimizing his strength, it's just a big fcuking waste of talent if you ask me.

I would like to see Goudy on a powerlifting routine twice a week, and strongman training once a week. He would be going places.

Goudy bodybuilding? That's fcuked up.

ok please excuse the back pic. i have not deadlifted or chinned or done anyback work (apart from yesterday) in over 2 weeks due to injury.

Upperbody work was restarted on tuesday and today i was benching only 160lbs, gettin back into it slowly. Tho i lost a little size i got a great pump so it might be hard to tell. here are the pics.

You look good, as usual. Keep on packing on the mass.

To get big you need to lift heavy.

To lift heavy, you need to sometimes lift light.

Just up the calories for a couple of weeks, then eat normal for a few.

IMHO, you got no excuses to not be fairly lean at around 250 lbs in a year or so. Just avoid the injuries, and use very moderate volume.

Looking forward to see a mass monster in a few years.

Dont turn completely to bodybuilding bro  :'(

A strength training routine centered around gaining mass is where its at, especially with someone with strength potential like you. I think this is similar to what u have already been doing, plus doing legs  ;D
