Republican Karen Handel wins special election in Georgia
Republican Karen Handel has won the hotly contested special election for Georgia’s 6th congressional district, defeating Democrat John Ossoff in the most expensive congressional campaign in American history.
CNN called the election for the Republican to replace Rep. Tom Price (R) who stepped down to take a cabinet position in the Trump administration.
Over $50 million was spent on special election to replace former Congressman Tom Price, who vacated the seat after being confirmed as Secretary of Health and Human Services.

Democratic candidate Jon Ossoff lost the Georgia special election Tuesday despite the fact that his campaign received unprecedented funding from the deeply liberal state of California.
The young Democrat received 8.9 times as many many donors from California than from any other state in the union, including all of the totals from Georgia itself.
The failed Democrat received 7,218 private donations from California residents. He benefitted from only 808 donations from inside of Georgia’s sixth congressional district.
Hollywood insiders like Chelsea Handler and Georgia Takei donated to Ossoff’s campaign, and other celebrities like Jane Fonda, Sam Waterston, and Kyra Sedgwick all donated their time towards the campaign.
The Georgia politician lost the election earlier than expected Tuesday evening. He earned 48 percent compared to former Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel’s 52 percent showing in the race.
Former Democratic Candidate Hillary Clinton had overwhelming support from liberals in California. She earned $132,137,278 during the election against Trump, a full 22.49 percent of her campaign’s total fundraising haul. The presidential candidate ended up earning and spending nearly $1.2 billion in her fight against Trump.
Perhaps not surprisingly, $49,224,731 came from residents of the Los Angeles area.

In his item of last night, Prof. Jacobson noted how Dems were taking the wrong lesson from the election, claiming that a close loss was a win. The message from Morning Joe was starkly different.
As Mark Halperin put it this morning, this was an “unmitigated disaster” for the Dems.
Joe Scarborough said that “all the chips were pushed to the middle of the table here. This was a winner take all and it was a huge win for Republicans and a big loss for Democrats.”

Among Democrats in Washington, the setback in Georgia revived or deepened a host of existing grievances about the party, accentuating tensions between moderate lawmakers and liberal activists and prompting some Democrats to question the leadership and political strategy of Nancy Pelosi, the House minority leader.
But the overarching theme among Democrats was a sense of sharp urgency about crafting a positive agenda around kitchen-table issues. Congressional Democrats have already been meeting in private to shape a core list of economic policies, but their work did not reach any conclusive point during a long season of special elections.
Representative Seth Moulton, Democrat of Massachusetts, said the defeat was “frustrating” and urged a shake-up at the top of the party.
“Our leadership owes us an explanation,” said Mr. Moulton, who voted against Ms. Pelosi in the last leadership election. “Personally, I think it’s time for new leadership in the party.”
D. Taylor, an influential labor leader who is president of Unite Here, the hospitality workers’ union, said the Democratic Party was “out of excuses on its electoral performance.”
“In red states or blue states, Democrats should be able to compete — and win,” Mr. Taylor said in a statement. “Millions of Americans are desperate to be led by political leaders who stand for something, are willing to take risks, and are willing to tell the truth and engage Americans where they live. “The role of money in politics is a major problem and particularly the role of unchecked anonymous money,” Ossoff said. “There have been super PACs in Washington who have been putting up tens of millions of dollars of attack ads in air for months now.”
