up until this year when I got so some injuries outside the gym which have made it a nightmare of starting over and over constantly, pretty much 4-5 days a week, except for from jan 2014-sept 2015 when I was deathly ill

coming back from that was hell, still to this day I have the effects of that which in addition between medication, rebound and age, have made it impossible to find the balance weight etc.

I aim to train everything twice over 9-10 days, taking rest days as I need them...

So far this round:

Pull A
Push A
Legs A
REST
Pull B
REST
Push B

Supposed to be Legs B tonight, but off out for food with the wife, so I'll add in a 3rd rest day.

You mean besides pure enjoyment....Of course....Your body doesn't work to a 7 day week...

If you are recovered and can progress lifts then why not train every 4-5th day?

One bodypart session per week = 52 session/yr
Training a bodypart twice every 8 days = 90ish sessions/yr

More sessions, more progress, more muscle...

Monday: back and chest
Wednesday: legs
Friday: Delts and arms

So weights three days a week lifting and I try to hit cardio 2 to 5 days a week. Today was an off day from lifting so I ran 4.1 slow 9 minute miles (around 6.6 MPH) then hit the heavy bag.  On weekends I drink beer like a drunk and add so many calories it's hard to take off. 5'8" 182lb right now. I would like to get down to 170lbs to 175lbs.

What is the benefit of this hot yoga?

hot yoga benefits for a bodybuilder from me

1. calories burned 400-500 per session
2. excessive sweating/water weight - makes me drink more water during the day
3. improves balance/flexibility
4. slows my mind down, its hot as hell in their 104 degrees so/i sleep awesome when i am done with it
5. done properly - its tons of stretching
6. very challenging for musclebound types
7. hot chics -
8. It has improved my bbing posing since i am more focused with my body & control
9. abs abs abs - most bbers dont train abs enough
10. accountability/place to be. keeps me out of trouble - i go in the evening typically 530pm class or 7pm class

if you do to decide to do it, give it a real chance. sign up for 2 weeks and go 5x a week, i would recommend a month and go 20-22 in 30 days.

i love hot yoga - shop around, also you will do a ton of laundry cuz you and your towels are drenched

True, but without the training stimuli...

If I get into a routine and have regular naps, work permitting, I recover faster which will ultimately mean more improvements.

Nowadays my shoulders hurt so much and I’m so busy that I hit arms and calves once a week and then do push-ups one day.Thats it and I feel so much better less aches and pains. Also only thing I care about is arms and calves and chest,So if that’s all I want then no need to do more anyways.Spent 25 years hammering my body, time to ease up on joints so I’m not a cripple in 10 years.
Title: Re: How often do you train?

(Back when I actually trained) I used to do a 6 day split, with Sunday off. Basically following the beginner's program of the Arnold Encyclopedia for Modern Bodybuilding. It's a good split if you have the time and can tweak things for your own body. Following the split exactly took me about 2 hours per workout but I tweaked it in later years to be around an hour or so.

I tried it when I was in my early 20's (was natty).  I ate 6x a day, but I burned out in less than 3 weeks.  If anyone follows the advanced workout routine in that book, you have to be on gear in order to recover.

Absolutely.  When I was in my 20's training 6 days/wk, I got home from work, ate dinner, took a 45 min nap, then I went to the gym... strength/energy in the gym was always much better after the nap.

Pretty much what I do, although I am considering splitting my sleep into two mini sleeps, going biphasic if you will...I tried it for a week a few months ago.

18:00-21:00 Sleep

21:00-02:00 Wake

02:00-06:00 Sleep

I still get 7 hours sleep and the 21:00-02:00 window is insanely productive for me for some reason.  If I had a 24 hour gym this would be perfect & I'd probably be doing it right now, but as my gym closes at 22:00 it makes training hard work/rushed.

here's a question that never been asked before on getbig, for those of you who goes to the gym, how often do you train?  8)

First off, I 'train' every time I go to the gym. It's getting there that is a problem for me. Too often, I talk myself out of going. At the end of the day, if I average my training frequency, I have to honestly confess it is probably between three and four times a week, although the plan I'm on calls for six days a week. Each gym visit is about 1 1/2 hours long. When I train at home, the sessions are considerably shorter, since I lack the equipment to do a lot of exercises.

I don't care what anyone says about a full body routine being a beginner routine. It's the hardest way you can train. Just brutal. When I do full body routines I long for split routines.

I feel like my body does better when I follow a split routine, training one muscle group a day. This give my aching bones and muscles a week to recover. So far, it has also kept me injury free.

I'm currently doing a weird mix:

FB PUSH - front squat / flat bench / behind the neck press
FB PULL - Romanian Deadlift / Yates Row / rear delt flies
PUSH - Incline bench / behind the neck press/ close grip press
PULL- Hang Cleans / chin ups/ Concentration curls
Legs- front squat / Romanian deadlift / lateral raises
OFF
REPEAT

I try to get through all 5 workouts on consecutive days but don't sweat a missed workout due to illness, time constraints etc. It's holding my interest - which is primary at this point in my lifting and my legs, upper back and delts in particular are responding to the high frequency.

I basically am doing three movements a day - one low(er) rep / high(er) intensity (4-5 working sets of 3's, 5's sometimes 8's) and then two going for volume (usually 5x10 @ around 50-60% !RM).

here's the stats so far

7x week - nobody unless i missed a respond
6x week - 5 getbiggers!
5x week - 9 getbiggers!
4x week - 6 getbiggers!
3x week - 8 getbiggers!
2x week - 1 getbigger!
1x week - no getbiggers!

its interesting how common it is to hit the gym 3-4 times a week and yet only train one musclegroup per week, one would think that people who are more often at the gym would be looking for working a muscle group at least twice per week.

so in theory, 1 person can be in the gym once a week and get as good or better result than someone who's at the gym 5-6 times in a week.

(not taking into account other reasons for going to the gym as for cardio or just enjoying it or prefering a split over fullbody etc i also feel there can be a benefit in lifting every day rather than once a week as there may be something to be said for having your body work every or every other day)

very true when I 1st started out I hit everything twice a week shorter workouts less sets but high intensity, after you build a good base each body part 1 a week is fine ...

If I get tired I take a day off and rest. I like to walk at the beach or at a nice pRk also.

I split the body into three sections

 chest, back, delts, traps
 bis, tris, forearms
quads, hams, calves, lower back

depending on work issues that could be 3 on 1 off or 2 on 1 off 2 on 1 off (my favorite since rest between bodyparts changes)

Lifted extremely heavy with reps 3-8 for 22 years now I do reps usually no lower than 15 and as high as a 100.Joints feel better and pumps are ridiculous.nothing lost except strength and couldn’t care less.

Naturally my strength is going down as I age and also include more cardio. I just feel like I'm not training hard unless I take every set to failure with what is heavy weight for me. On the other hand my brain is telling me I'm one rep away for really messing up my body.  I've seen many outstanding trainers that use moderate weight for lack of a better term muscular endurance training.

In the running world a 400 meter  sprinter certainly trains more intense than a 10K runner but you will never in the history of track hear a 400 meter guy say a 10K runner doesn't train brutally hard. In bodybuilding you hear that all the time. A guy that uses 6 sets to failure a body part will often say the 20 set guy isn't training hard when nothing could be future from the truth.

Maybe I will come to my senses soon and use lighter weight, less rest between sets and let the last set of 4 to 6 sets be the failure set on an exercise.

I just changed the way I squat. I realized as I age the shallower the squats were getting. Now instead of putting 275lbs for sets I went down to 170lbs and buried it with control. I was more sore the next day than with the heavier weight.

Yes. Moderate weight with more sets and reps actually provides me a better pump. It doesn't do much for strength though, but it does lessen the need for as much cardio. If you maintain good form, you are less likely to injure yourself with this method. In my entire bodybuilding experience, I have not sustained a significant injury while lifting.

It is fairly easy to reach failure when lifting light. Do enough reps, even with body-weight alone and you will eventually fail to complete the movement.

I've found that I am able to squat extremely low with lighter weight and do it with no fear of a back or knee injury. No added weight and 100 reps will make you quads fell like overfilled water balloons, not to mention the burn. Try doing 4 sets of these and then let me know how your legs feel when you finish.

At this point, I rely heavily on machines because my grip is very weak from osteoarthritis. Only when the weight is fairly light or when dropping the weight is unlikely to cause injury to anything besides the floor (unless I were to drop it on my foot), do I use free weights these days. Dumbbell shrugs are one example of an exercise I am still confident in doing using fairly weight. I particularly like the range of movement when doing dumbbell shrugs.

Theses days....
One ON and One Off split. So a body part gets trained once every 8-9 days.
Perfect for recovery, staying strong and maintaining a life outside the gym.

I lift moderately heavy; Why leg press 14 plates a side for 10 when I can do 10
plates a side for a quality 20? Why flat dumbbell press the 140's for 6-8 when I can
use the 120's for sets of 12?

20-30 min of mild cardio post workout depending on time.

Test and Var medically prescribed.
MK677 daily.

I feel great.

That was Bill Pearl's recommendation. Use 6 to 8 reps with 5 sets for an exercise. That way the weight isn't super light but you are still getting volume with 20 sets a body part. He said with high reps the weight is too light and the muscles get stringy. What ever stringy means.

Right now I'm following the Soflete Stamina plan called Chimera.

https://train.soflete.com/teams/soflete-stamina/current-program

Quote
Chimera will focus heavily on building Power Endurance. Athletes can expect to maintain absolute strength, while building rotational and anti-rotational power in their trunks. If you want to be that bomber on your team who is not only the most powerful, but who can maintain that power for an extended period of time, Chimera is built for you.

The app is amazing - all exercises / cadence laid out on your phone, with instructional videos for each exercise, and the ability to track progress.

Lately, not much, got a major sinus infection from the fires a few weeks ago, and ok I wiil admit some smoking, which Ive stopped now. Typically though, every 3 to 4 days, when I was competing up to 3 times a week, sometimes 4, with cardio thrown in. I was doing cycles for that though, training naturally, it takes me 3 to 4 days to fully recover. Do a modified HD workout, have Nautilus and some free weights iin my garage gym. Going to try and increase frequency when the last of this infection clears out and get to 3 times every 10 days- made my best gains on that. 57, and not competing now so its enough. If they had a mastes classic division that does'nt require the massive juicing  to be competitive, that the open and Masters NPC shows do, that might be fun, maybe. Going to start walking again, I enjoy getting out and burning a few extra calories and getting some fresh air.

Day 1 - Chest/Bicep/Calves
Day 2 - Back/Rear delt/Triceps/abs

Day 3 - Front/side delt/Traps/Hamstrings/Calves
Day 4 - Quads/Abs

Repeat

*:30 min cardio 3 x per week

I train very fast, rest times usually no more than a :60.

I train very high volume supersetting the same bodyparts

Your routine looks great. I particularly like that you only train 4 days a week. I'm considering giving your routine a try which is why I'm asking you for more details. The routine I've been following for quite awhile requires hitting the gym 6 days a week, but limiting the training period to not more than an hour and preferably 45 minutes. I don't include cardio in that time frame, so it adds another 20 to 30 minutes to the routine time.

Do you vary the exercises for each muscle group? How many different ways to you hit your quads, chest, biceps and triceps, etc. You mention that you train fast with little rest between sets. Do you ever get winded or need a longer rest time when exercising large muscles using heavier resistance, such as when doing squats for quads? Do you feel like you don't get enough cardio by moving swiftly through your routine? What kinds of exercises/equipment do you do strictly for cardio? When you add in cardio is it on the same day that you are lifting and do you do it before or after the rest of your routine?

I also shoot for minimal rest times between sets. I sometimes get the rest period down to 30 seconds on smaller muscle groups. If I go full blast like this, I'll occasionally count that as sufficient for cardio. One cardio exercise that really puts a burn on my quads is the lateral Helix machine, specially when doing it in a half squat position. Even a minute doing laterals this way makes my quads feel like they are on fire.

Me. I used to train heavy, more for powerlifting/strongman but about a year and half ago went back to more bodybuilding-type training. Now it's mostly back to BB training. You get older, you've got to change. I'm even seeing more powerlifters switch. At some point it takes it's toll.

I'm not training heavy and have not for several years. Although I know guys who remain really strong well into their 70's, I find that my strength has diminished and osteoarthritis take a toll too since it fucks up my grip. My friend Earl was still entering strength competitions and winning in his early 70's. Of course there is not much competition in that age class, so a win is more likely.

Have you also dropped weight? I was hovering around 200 lbs for years until I made a point of sliming down to the 175 range. My top weight in my early 30's was 225 lbs. I was big, but I felt like shit.

Only issue I see is training front delts the day after training triceps.  If he's not doing presses for front delts then no big deal. Then again, same issue trying to work back the day after training biceps.

Of course the only split that matters is the one you'll actually stick with

Every single day 2 or 3 times per day

Have already trainied twice today and it's only 3 pm

That doesn't allow for much rest. Muscles grow during recovery periods. That constant assault on your muscles is really counterproductive. Don't be fooled by getting a good pump. Yeah your arms might look terrific when they are pumped, but that pump is not a permanent gain.

There's a shit load of information in this tread, which is great. Not everyone responds the same to a routine. It's a good idea to vary your exercise routine (which I'm not so good at doing) to keep things fresh. It is really easy to get stuck and not even realize it.

Nope! Everyone dies sooner or later. Why fear it? I live in the moment. Good health is important to me because it makes me feel good and not because it could extend my life. Incidentally, my doctor says I am in perfect health....so who knows?

When I was your age, I thought being 70+ years old and in good health was next to impossible.  ;)

Whew!! Lot of questions. I’ll answer most in a video. It’s easier.  But in short, I change up exercises about every 4 weeks or so. Again, at this point in my training I’m Superseting the SAME body part not opposing. Example would be biceps..

 Standing BB curl- 4 x 21’s Superset w/
Alt DB Curl - 4 x 12

Plate loaded Preachers - 4 x 12-15 Superset w/
Hammer Strength Single arm curl - 4 x 12-15

Reverse BB curl (ez) - 3 x 12-15Superset w/
90 degree DB curl - 3 x 10-12

Leg day is usually up to 32 sets of paired exercises

No pressing movements for front delt. At this point I’ll superset alternate front lateral raise with a plate loaded hammer Strength press.

Missed the "repeat" if there's no days off between repeats than this is too much for me. I barely make six days a week, but then I have other things to attend to. Staying fit is only part of my life. Coach seems dedicated to weight lifting and exercise since it is also his profession and not just a hobby.

I must have been reading something into his routine that was familiar since I exercise one muscle group each workout, which gives me a full week to recover. Old = longer recovery time.  ;)

I don't know if you remember a guy named Joe Means from the 1976 AAU Mr. America. He was ripped beyond belief. He used giant sets for every body part. He would use three to four exercises  a body part and super set them or rather giant set them. He trained before a contest 6 days a week. I would imagine it's a great way to get cut up.

Thanks for the response.

This might work for me. Two days off allows for almost one week of recovery before starting over. This would give me two flex days for other things I might need to attend to, like in December when I will kill an entire day driving over a hundred miles to give a speech to a group of retirees and then have lunch with the group's Board as an honorarium.

I do a pretty normal training routine. Ive always done it.

Sample routine:

Sunday: Chest
Monday: Back
Tuesday: Off
Wednesday: Shoulders and traps
Thursday: Legs
Friday: Arms
Saturday: Off

Cardio 3-5x per week (20-30 minutes)

Any information about my training would be welcome. Changes?
