Yes, I think you are right. Coming out as gay in the 70's was stigmatized as it was. I remember reading about the famous story of Christine Jorgensen as the first surgical transexual in the US (1950's) and what a stir it caused. Now most people don't think twice about it.
What I think has really changed is the easy availability of sex hormones. Just slap a patch on and you can induce male or female sexual characteristics fairly easily. It makes me laugh that using estrogen to feminize a male is perceived as shocking by many while the same thing happens to bodybuilders who get bitch tits. I suppose Franco Colombu was the first transgender Mr Olympia...

I see three main causes for the reason increase in this nonsense.
1. Life is too soft. Instead of having to work for money or forage for food people have easy access to credit which permits them to do nothing with their lives.
2. Lack of social growth. USA has stagnated as a society since the 70s. We're not expanding as an empire. Jobs are in decline. There's no great war or depression to galvanize the people towards a goal.
3. Hormones development is being tampered with. Maybe it's the food or in the water but something external is added to the western human diet to fuck up normal brain development.
