Title: New car time (mid life crisis related)
Post by: Obvious Gimmick on April 06, 2019, 08:00:58 AM
Ok here's the rub: I'm staring down the barrel of 50 and I need a new car. I'm not a car guy. I roll hard in an Altima now. But need a little more flash.  Looking for something in the 60k range. I've lived frugally my whole life, so don't mind spending that. I have a company car, so really only put 5,000 a year on it. Don't mind going a year or 2 used. Thoughts?

I think the Dodge Ram series is an excellent truck and when compared to what Ford is axing, a great value in a full size Amurican Pickemup!

For a $100k no. But it’s a nice truck. Too much truck for just putting around town

I had a new company car every three years  so my personal car was always a reliable looking junk car.  Now I'm retired and the company car is gone. When I sell my house and downsize I always wanted a Cadillac. Rented a SUV Cadillac and it was the nicest car I ever drove.  I don't care about fast anymore. I care about luxury and a fantastic ride.

Buy a used Jaguar.
They're cheap and good for your health - car will be breaking down in no time and you'll be frugally hiking to walmart and the gym.

XJR 100 (the R is the super charger version)
the 100 ... limited edition and can tell by the wheels.

l love and miss the big body jaguar's - throw back - i dont care for the rounded off jaguars of today.

OP

get a slightly used mustang GT convertible with a manual transmission (if you have a wife) get an automatic - you will be super happy, fun factor, little headache.

plus you can sell it whenever you need too - very liquid market

Personally, I like the Toyota Tacoma TRD's with the hood scoop and offroad sport package.  They're much less expensive, better on gas, and still have an agressive/sporty look to them.

A new car might make you feel on top of it for awhile, but you will still be staring down the barrel of 50. If it makes you happy, I say go for it. Life is short.

Let some idiot suffer the depreciation. Then pick up a luxury car or SUV for max 15,000 usd.
First owner, fully documented and purchase it at a reliable dealership

You'll drive off the lot knowing you made a great deal!

S-class, LS, XC90, something like that

DIY is one thing but not smart at picking up 10 year old S class or any euro car. Only hood rat ghetto ass people do this shit, I laugh even more when they have to dump even more money into maintenance that’s even more than they paid for the car 😂

If repairs / reliability are a worry, going for a used Lexus V6 or V8 can be smart imo. For an older first owner, you can find great buys for max 15,000 usd.

Best bang for your buck and reliability would be a C7 Bette. No competition. The higher end pony cars don’t stand out but are monsters.

If you're not a car guy it does not really matter what you get; you just want to get from A to B, right?  But if you are looking for driving enjoyment look to a BMW, Audi, or a Benz.  I have owned all three (in that order) and they provide real Fahrvergnügen (driving enjoyment).  I currently drive a Benz GLE 43 AMG and truly LOVE driving it.  The Sport+ mode is a very addictive!  I thought my drag racing days were over... I was wrong.  ;D https://www.mbusa.com/en/vehicles/class/gle/coupe/type-amg

You do not have to get the overpriced AMG version; the stock GLE is just as fun, but do not drive the AMG unless you know you want to buy it because it is very hard to go backward once you drive it.  The downside of this vehicle is there are things I don't want to use the GLE for... like taking the dog to the beach or hauling stuff for home improvements... so I got a Tacoma TRD Sport for that--which I also love.

If you do not want an SUV almost any version of a Benz sedan will give you driving enjoyment.

Had that exact vehicle for about 3 years. One of the most fun all around vehicles I have ever owned. Got 25 mpg highway with a V6 no less.

He did get a 20 year old jag which has one of the worst reliability of any cars so close enough, a man of Vince’s caliber should own a 20 year old S class as well
