Title: Mike Dayton/ Chuck Sipes - hand strength
Post by: Lord Humungous on May 10, 2006, 05:53:42 AM
Anyone have any cool stories about Dayton? He had wicked hand strenght for a bodybuilder, I have seen pictures of him breaking hand cuffs and bending 10 penny spikes. Sipes was another one with brutal strength not only of his hands but on the bench as well. If you happed to have any pics please post them.

Mike Dayton and I both trained at the Clancy Ross Mr. America Club, in Walnut Creek. I was competing in USPF powerlifting at the time and Mike's strongman competitions & bodybuilding contest were going on. Mike also practiced the martial arts heavily. Mike taught me to tear licence plates in half. Break baseball bats & tear phone books.

Mike's hand strength was legendary. Mike tried many times to show me how to bend & tear coins in half, but I could never come close. Mike's ability to endure pain at the finger-tips was crazy. His hands were not only extremely strong but very tough.

Mike was the only person I have EVER seen or heard of, that could tear a nickel in half. A penny was easy for Mike. A quarter was easy for Mike, but a nickel took a little extra "Mind control", but Mike Dayton could do it. I don't think anybody has ever torn a nickel in half, other than Mike Dayton. Nobody.

I used to think it was some sort of trick, but it wasn't. He took the coin between the tips of his thumb and the finger pads along the second joint of his index finger... bend forward and place his hands on his upper thighs and proceeded to use his traps, delts, thumb tips & pecs to bend and then break the coin. I didn't hear about this, I didn't read about this, I stood three feet away and watched it! Absolutely incredible[/u]!

The pain required to break handcuffs was insane. I think there were several guys who had the power, I truely thought that I did, but none, other than Mike, could endure the pain of the steel cuffs cutting into your wrist.

I will say with absolute confidence, that any feat of strength that was ever attributed to Mike Dayton was absolutely true.

Mike Dayton was an excellent bodybuilder and a phenomenal strong man.

One more thing... www.american-kyokushin.com/cnt.akk.don-buck.html  (http://www.american-kyokushin.com/cnt.akk.don-buck.html) Great old photos a bit lower in this link.

On the link that BB has provided, you will see a man training with Mike Dayton, named Don Buckwww.american-kyokushin.com/cnt.school.info.html  (http://www.american-kyokushin.com/cnt.school.info.html). Don Buck was one of the most lethal men in the world.

Mike's hand were tough... Don's were tougher. I've been hit with brass knuckles and police batons... Don Bucks hands were every bit as hard as the baton or the brass knuckles.

Don hit me one time in sparing and I wasn't KO'ed but everything turned green for about an hour. I never lost conciousness but I could not stand up or talk and everything was green. LOL.

I haven't seen Don in 23-25 years and until tonight, I hadn't though about him in years. He was a validated killer... with his hands... not a gun... and one of the toughest men alive.

Edit:By my 1st link you can see that Don is now gone. I did not know this until a few minutes ago. Most unfortunate indeed.

Tommy, John,

I was invited to Mike's hanging once but didn't have the guts to go for fear that he would actually do it. But he did do it without the typical result.

I do recall meeting him a few times in the Bay Area and he was a great guy. I think that this was shortly before Eddie Corney started making a name for himself.

Tommy, do your recall Billy Adams and Wayne Anderson (Bob's Gym in Fremont) back then?

There's a guy in Hawaii who tears nickles and quarters in half easily and also removes lug nuts from tractors with his fingers.

And my nephew removes bottle caps with his teeth and has no need of ever going to a dentist. (Sorry for that bit of information!)

Another can pick up two 45 pound olympic plates (back to back) with his fingers without much of an effort at all. I think that was also part of Mike's act way back then.

The one thing that still really gets me on the edge of my seat is when someone blows up a hot water bottle till it bursts. Or drives a nail through a two by four with his bare fist.

If I recall right, Dayton did the hot water bottle thing but correct me if I'm wrong. That was a long time ago.

All this was going on when Ellington Darden was training in a bucket of mud, and if you can recall that when it happened, you're really dating yourself.

Thanks for the Dayton memories. He was/is a colorful critter and an important part of bodybuilding history.

How bout Bill Smith, Bill Stathis, Curt Freeman, Mel Knoll? Do you go back far enough to recall them?

And who was that real old man who set phenominal bench press records in the San Francisco Bay Area way back in the 50's? He trained at the Y on Golden Gate Avenue.

They all date back to the Dayton era and vicinity.

Thanks. Those were great times!

Hey, Lord. I met Chuck Sipes on numerous occasions but that was so far back that I can't even recall the specifics.

But I do recall him throwing his signature pose with one fist on his hip and the other in a very impressive bicep pose.

Back then he held himself like the letter "S" and that method of posing your body got to be very popular.

Everyone tried to do that "S" pose for many years to follow and every bodybuilder knew what it meant.

I guess no one understands what it means today.

Stunt-

Billy Adams & Wayne Anderson? No, I don't remember those names. Perhaps we crossed paths at some point, but I don't think I know the names.

You're correct, Dayton did the hot-water bottle thing and the driving nails thing. His hands were so tough and he could absolutely block out most pain via Chi mind control. He also did the plate grip stuff. We called it "Pinch-gripping". I was OK at it as it did not require any pain tolerance  ;D only grip strength.

I don't recognize the other names you have listed. Again.. we may have met but I just don't remember.

I always liked Ellington Darden  ;D. Big man who enjoyed a good laugh. His ideas on dieting for weight gain were right on the money.

T-

Oh Matrix... a hot-water bottle was an old type of heavy duty thick rubber thermos type thing. You filled it with hot water and placed it on sore bones & joints... I think. Just imagine a very small, EXTREMELY thick, square, inner tube. ;D. Blowing it up to the bursting point was tough.

Here i am popping a hot water bottle.  I traveled all over the place as a spokesperson for the Ameican Lung Association.  I actually popped a hot water bottle to start a marathon once instead of them using a gun.  I was the thickest one they make too.  Not the crappy one Franco used.  In fact at one time I was going to attempt to break Francos world record for popping the hot water bottle.  I have a vide of me from start to finish I did at a celebrity softball game I was playing in against the FBI fro charity.  I will try to figure out how to get it on here.  I did it once in front of about 5000 people to open a major concert here.  I think Stunt was there.

I had Lee Haney try it one time and he almost passed out.  Every vien in his head was popping.  The picture below was taken at a charity fund raiser to help this little girl who had Leukemia.  I challenged about 10 guys all strongmen form Hawaii and some BB's.  No one beat me and actually no one popped their bottle but one guy got so close I took a nail and popped it for him.  Stunt it was Duke.

I had just snapped my achilles tendon in a racquetball tournament in LA the week before.  That is why I had my leg up.  It was in a cast.

By the way, I probably popped over 100 hot water bottles in front of audiences over the past 25 years.  I used to do it at the Special Olympics too when I volunteered for them.  Not once did I not do it.  I came very close in the video I have cause the hardest part is keeping the bottle against your face so air doesn't leak out.  And air was leaking a little bit and I almost quit but didn't.

Was the older man known for his benching:?
   Jan 5, 1893           KARL NORBERG                    1983

        for cyberpump: Jan 4:
Karl Norberg was born on January 5, 1892 and though his
physique never became impressive by bodybuilding standards,
his muscular strength, and the longevity of it, amazed the
        iron community.

Norberg celebrated various birthdays with heavy bench presses,
and although the magazines reported varying numbers through
the years, with the highest bench at 480, we know he benched
430 on April 17, 1965 at the Mr. California contest
it appears that on his 80th birthday, January 5, 1972 he got
        three reps with 300 pounds.

Karl died in 1983 in Sweden.

Cool pic Keith!

One more Dayton story...

Mike was very good at what I'll call cold-lifting. No warm-up reps at all.

One day at Clancy's, a couple young & pretty good bodybuilders Dan Zumora & Danny McColgin were doing deadlifts and had worked their way up to a final set of 505 lbs. Well, Dayton happened to be in the gym, just hanging out and Danny said something like, "Hey Dayton... One day you might be able to train with the big dogs, if you're lucky... watch this!"  ;D (they were all friends). Mike walked over to the lifting platform, set his feet and did 5 clean reps with the 505 lbs. He then just gave the boys his Dayton smirk and walked back over to his previous conversation.

Dan & Danny just stood there looking at each other in bewilderment.  ;D
;D I've never seen two bodybuilers lose their lat & bicep pump so fast. ;D

YES, JOE! Thanks! It was Karl Norberg! Thanks for total recall!

Bill Stathis brought Karl on stage at one of the early San Fran contests at the Golden Gate YMCA and Karl did some very impressive benching while the scores were being calculated.

Wasn't Karl a stevadore back then?

Joe, do you have any strrength feat info on Mac Bachelor? I met him a number of times but never did see him do any feats of strength.

I gotta add that that same guy in Hawaii reportedly could bend a quarter using the fingers of one hand only, but I never saw him do that personally.
