26  Getbig Bodybuilding Boards / Nutrition, Products & Supplements / Need to raise my cholesterol? on: February 10, 2008, 06:44:25 PM
I just had my first physical in 9 years last week...may have been a tad past due.

My overall cholesterol was 127, triglycerides were 38. Even though that (and that rest of my stats) looked pretty great, my HDL was only 43. Optimal level should be closer to 60 so I've read, and the doc didn't suggest anything because I was within the "normal" range, and it was more than 25% of my total.

Can I do anything to raise it more? I take 3-5 grams fish oil a day, and have for over 4 years now, anything else?
27  Getbig Main Boards / Gossip & Opinions / Re: Art Atwood busted (again?)! on: January 27, 2008, 10:06:09 AM

Milos knows all.

I used to drive by the supplement store they're talking about every day on the way to work. I always thought it was strange how the place was always closed, even middle of the day, I guess now I know why! There were actually another 2-3 suppl stores here that closed pretty quickly without reason, one owner even disappeared about a week before the supplement store shut down for good (-anyone else in Dallas area remember Jerry from Biosteel on 75/Knox ave.?).

That's pretty sorry about the fake roids though. Atwood was known for walking around with a fanny pack full of whatever kind of rec drug you could think of. Me thinks you can't be that obvious for too long before people start to notice...

Some guys are so fat they won't fit into a regular car.

haha, I've seen those guys.

Yes I do use the capabilities of a truck, but not that often, 1-2 a month. Im 6'2" and I went from a little v-6 mustang to the f-150 mainly because of the size and because I didn't like the car-like ride of SUV's I'd had in the past. Even if I'm not using the bed every day, its still nice to be able to tow a boat or jetski when needed in the summer, or not worrying about finding someone to call with a truck when I go to home depot.
29  Getbig Bodybuilding Boards / Nutrition, Products & Supplements / Re: Creatine and coffee on: January 17, 2008, 11:55:54 AM
I thought after all the debates about creatine and caffeine negating each other settled down, it was determined that the only way caffeine would really effect creatine is if they are literally taken at the exact same time. You may want to rethink it for that reason, but those statements are worth researching again...
30  Getbig Bodybuilding Boards / Nutrition, Products & Supplements / Re: Kre Alkalyn on: January 17, 2008, 11:52:53 AM
When I was in college back in 2000, we had some sport nutrition profs come talk to us about supplements and the number they threw out, which I also heard @ a year later was that 25% of people who take creatine won't have any effect at all, likely because of digestion, etc. Maybe that's where that came from...
31  Getbig Main Boards / General Topics / Re: Truck on: January 17, 2008, 11:27:09 AM
Hey dudes. I'm going to get rid of my old piece of shit buick soon. I'm going to get a truck. What do you think? Ford, Dodge, Chevy, Toyota?

I have an 06 Ford f-150 and its been great. If I had to do it over again, I'd probably get the Toyota though, better styling on the outside and a bigger engine, but you do pay more for it. You can wait until next fall and see how people like the new 09 f-150s and Rams, but I agree that the Rams have been so-so on quality since 03. The Nissans always seemed to have a cheap feel on the interior but that's just me.
32  Getbig Bodybuilding Boards / Nutrition, Products & Supplements / Re: Kre Alkalyn on: January 15, 2008, 08:51:17 PM
Ive been considering a few Sci Fit products including Kre Alkalyn since I noticed how cheap their supps are.  Anyone have a lot of experience with this company? good/bad?

Used to be bad, they got a bad rap for using cheap ingredients back in the late 90's. Then they came out with some $1000 garauntee that if someone could prove their protein powder didn't match label claims they'd pay them the $$$. They've pretty much stuck to basic formulas which is why they're relatively cheap.

I've used Kre-Alkyln at 4 caps a day and it seemed to work well after about week 2. Some people speculate that you really don't need that much creatine at all, and that's the reason why people are getting better results of the Kre-Alk and CEE products - most only contain 2-3 gms of creatine per dose. Perhaps that's all your body can really utilize anyway? I don't know. I did just buy some standard 100% pure CM the other day to run at 3gms a day tops to see if I get a similar result. If I notice the same kinds of strength gains then I'll be done with the new creatines variations that I've been trying for the past year or so. I'll post up what happens.
33  Getbig Bodybuilding Boards / Nutrition, Products & Supplements / Re: 1fast400 on: December 10, 2007, 09:39:02 PM
I'll work on my reading skills as soon as you stop being hypocritical for a buck. Pre ban drugs are safe? If you know they're going to be banned, you know what they consist of more or less. Don't split hairs.

Yeah actually, they were,

Easy example - Pre ban - 4-ad: sold when info was also available on its conversion  % to testosterone, mechanism of actions, etc.
Post ban - Methoxy TST: 17b-Methoxy-Trienosterone - no one, including the company, could give a straight answer on what it really was. People assumed it was similar to something like 4-ad, but no one really knew and the fact that the company manufacturing it never really addressed customer questions spoke volumes
34  Getbig Bodybuilding Boards / Nutrition, Products & Supplements / Re: best brand of bcaa's and leucine? on: November 21, 2007, 09:23:05 PM
In a flavored mix, Xtend is by far the best taste wise.  You'll pay a little bit for that.  If you don't need flavoring and want a name brand, primaforce makes a bulk version, 500g.  Outside of that, BulkNutrition.com sells a 1000g for around 38 bucks.  Might not taste to good, but is a great value.

Didn't you sell bulk nutrition.com and now work as the president of the company that makes Xtend? Scivation/Primaforce? I guess that makes it kind of win win for you all the way around huh?

That being said, yeah, Xtend is the best by far  Grin  - lemonade flavor never gets old

You guys really did get screwed. We used the Fairmont for the host hotel for my wedding and no one spent over $99 a night for their rooms. Downtown Dallas, that is cheap.  There needs to be better coordination from the NPC for stuff like that, with the amount of rooms they should block off for that kind of event you should have gotten a better rate, comped valet, etc..

Alex A - pm me if you want, my wife's friend from college is the PR/corporate/sporting event coordinator for the Fairmont. I don't know if she worked with the NPC last weekend but she would know who to talk to/negotiate with for the sheets and charges...

38  Getbig Main Boards / Gossip & Opinions / Re: HOLY SHIT, JAY GETS CRUCIFIED ON THE LATEST FLEX COVER!!!!!!!!!!!! on: November 10, 2007, 08:46:45 AM
HOLY SHIT.  Never thought I'd see THAT on the cover of Flex.

I wonder what conclusion they come to. I'd bet they justify his win in the end

They do.

I flipped through it last night - it basically says everyone knew Jay was softer/flater than he should have been, but that he rebounded enough by Sat night to win it even though the rest of the top 3 were right on his heels  Roll Eyes

It was a pretty boring article actually, they had one little sidebar of a comparison between Wolfe and Cutler with the caption of "what would have happened if people got to see the comparison between Wolfe and Cutler..." They don't draw any conclusions though, its basically everything that was already said at one point or another. They did say Wolfe was the obvious People's Champ and will be Jay's biggest threat next year.

Oh and they happened to forget the part where Cutler was running scared during the final posedown.
39  Getbig Bodybuilding Boards / Nutrition, Products & Supplements / Re: How much caffeine do you ingest each day? on: October 22, 2007, 07:31:22 PM
Deezamn and I thought I had it bad for 3-4 cups of coffee's worth a day.

I haven't tried this yet but its gotten great reviews -

Basically you can lower your stim intake and get a better effect, or cut it out all together and be back to baseline faster than you would otherwise.

41  Getbig Main Boards / General Topics / Re: HALO 3 on: September 27, 2007, 06:54:25 AM

I totally agree.  Gears of War is a much better game, hands down.

No way.

Other than graphics, GOW gets old fast.

I actually took my Gears of War copy to Gamespot 2 weeks ago and got $30 credit for pre-ordering Halo 3. Monster cheapness. Smiley Those of you comparing it to Halo 2, I hope you have a HD TV, it makes all the difference with this one.
42  Getbig Main Boards / Gossip & Opinions / Re: POLL:WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK IS BETTER POST WORKOUT?????? on: September 25, 2007, 07:06:27 PM
both!

heres my opinion=
amino acids 15 minutes prior to training...to send these straight into the muscle while you are working out. this goes along with milos idea of being able to be "hyperanabolic". there is some truth in that, i believe.
at the end of the workout 20-60 grams of a carb like dextrose or vitargo. amount depends on your metabolism. this replenishes muscle glycogen, preps body for uptake of what comes next.
immedietly after last set take in between 20-40 grams protein, between 5 to 10 grams creatine monohydrate, and between 5-10 grams of l-glutamine. all dosages are dependant on your metabolism, the size of the muscle group you just trained (for example...legs would require a larger dose than say biceps), and how intense of a workout you just completed.
45 mins to an hour later...take some fish oils, eat a large portion of protein, if you have a quick metabolism eat moderate amount of carbs, have soem veggies, and drink alot of water.

this is my opinion.

avoid fish oil post workout, even a couple hours later. If its a large dose it can actually negate some of the damage you did during your workout that would lead to new muscle growth. The inflammation response from training is a big signal for your body to start repair the muscle (and make it bigger). You don't want to blunt that response with anything anti-inflammatory related.
43  Getbig Bodybuilding Boards / Training Q&A / Re: PARALLEL SQUATS ARE IMPOSSIBLE on: September 17, 2007, 08:43:25 PM

If you're main concern is maximizing muscle tension this is the way to do it.  You also have less risk of injury because injuries are mostly cause when you fall into a range of motion in which you are weaker.

This makes no sense.

The "better" position you're recommending would place your body in a weaker state, more likely leading to injury. Your body's natural state is closer to your first illustration when handling heavier weights.
44  Getbig Main Boards / Gossip & Opinions / Re: What is your favorite restaurant for bodybuilding quality food? on: September 14, 2007, 08:25:40 AM
Yes!!!! Also Brazilian barbecue, had one of those on a trip to Guyana a couple of years back and they would just be constantly walking around the tables with skewers packed with chunks of steak, carving it on your plate!!! Half of it wasn't even cooked but hey  Grin

They have those places here in Dallas (and in a couple other towns, Houston too I think) - called Fogo de Chao. The other knock off is Texas de Brazil. They give you a red/green card that you flip over to green and waiters come over to slice off cuts of all different kinds of meat, they don't stop until you turn your card back to red. Awesome idea - plus you don't actually have to talk to the help!  Grin

45  Getbig Main Boards / Gossip & Opinions / Re: ABS looking GOOD! on: September 13, 2007, 02:42:18 PM
you'll have to excuse adam. he's half retarded. i didn't lose 50 pounds on my bench and 100 on my deadlift. i lost maybe 15 on my bench (chiefly from losing my arch), and about 40 on my deadlift. none on my squat.

Good transformation. I guess it just goes to show that some people (Adam) can't stand it when a true natural loses enough bodyfat to look good without taking 800 professional photos covered in oil.
46  Getbig Bodybuilding Boards / Nutrition, Products & Supplements / Re: Hi-carb PWO shake = insulin spike = visceral fat build up on: September 13, 2007, 07:28:33 AM
It is physiologically impossible when the glycogen reserves in the muscles and liver are used up and you drink 80 carbs that they will be stored as fat; only after the muscles and liver are full do they get stored as fat...

True but its also going to depend more on what you're eating the rest of the day, and your pre-workout meal too.

If your 6pm workout is preceded by 3-4 meals and/or a pre-workout shake by the time you get to the gym then its highly unlikely 60 minutes of weight training is going to completely deplete glycogen. I used to force myself to get at least 60gms of carbs with my 40 gms of protein immediately after the gym, but I've gotten better results lately with just using BCAA's around my workout.
47  Getbig Bodybuilding Boards / Nutrition, Products & Supplements / Re: So Gatorade/Powerade no good for post-workout any more? on: September 07, 2007, 06:50:05 PM
I could be wrong, but it was always my understanding that the liquid is primarily sucrose or high fructose corn syrup based, but the powder you buy in the store is still primarily malto-dextrin. I don't remember the exact reason but maybe because of shelf life of the liquid.
48  Getbig Bodybuilding Boards / Steroids Info & Hardcore / Re: let's all fess up about our dianabol use!! on: September 07, 2007, 06:16:23 PM
Are you kidding me?  It's used to treat alcholic's with cirrhosis of the liver.  It's definately powerful stuff.

I think you're thinking of NAC, N-acetyl-cystine. They do use that in hospitals for tylenol overdose, I don't know about milk thistle though, I've always heard its kind of take it or leave it. Wouldn't hurt anything though.
49  Getbig Bodybuilding Boards / Nutrition, Products & Supplements / Re: Optimum Nutrition Site - Delusional Pricing? on: September 03, 2007, 03:08:01 PM
I usually buy my ON products from Bodybuilding.com. Today I decided to check out the ON web site to see if they had a store and what their prices were like.

I noticed that a 5 pound tub of ON Whey costs $74.99 on the ON site, but only costs $37.99 on bodybuilding.com.

What on earth are they thinking?

Most suppl companies do this to set a suggested retail pricing, knowing that most internet sites and distributers will be buying it for a lot less to sell to consumers. They know the majority of their business will come from distribution and they don't want to price their distributers out of the market by offering the same BB.com pricing.

Plus its a marketing thing. Most larger supplement companies have a business model that includes national distribution practices, etc., so their website is more of a showcase of products than an actual e-store. But if you notice, many of the smaller companies out there have products available to buy on their own website for a much more reasonable price.

it sounds like palumbo is laughing AT "billygunz" not WITH him.

I got that impression too. I almost feel bad about ragging on him on MD now.
