I used to be involved in SuperSlow training.

There was a renowned trainer from the Seattle area who needed to lose over 100 pounds.

I asked him how he got to be such a renowned trainer while he was borderline morbidly obese (this was on Fred Hahn's message board, I think).

All I got was a bunch of people saying how this guy was so much better than me as a trainer.

I attacked one of their gods.

I was 17 doing side laterals with 110's, when I was coming down I got too close and slammed it between the two dumbbells. Went into shock, taken to the hospital and had to pee from a catheter for over a week. Worst part is I had an ugly mean nurse. I called her Nurse ratchet.

Were you wearing those awesome square glasses at the time?

Sounds awful.

A friend of mine was loading plates back onto the weight tree and got his scrotum pinched by the plates.  He let out a howl from across the gym.  Pretty hilarious.

9  Getbig Main Boards / Gossip & Opinions / Re: Working out while sore from previous workout? on: March 26, 2014, 01:24:17 PM
What the magazines don't account for is all the serious training that doesn't result in growth. My theory does. No soreness then little or no growth. Mentzer was a smart guy but he got it wrong. He was basing his theory of Heavy Duty on Dr Hans Selye's stress theory. The idea was that you trained hard and the muscles overcompensated by getting bigger and stronger. You waited until the muscle recovered then trained them again. Mike found with his clients that resting a week or more between workouts resulted in growth. There were no scientific studies done to confirm his hypotheses.

What I discovered is that I had to train long and hard enough to cause Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness. No DOMS -> no hypertrophy. If this was true then I concluded it made sense to try to keep the muscles sore. I trained every third day to give connective tissue some relief. The muscles were ready to go before then.

So, what kind of training leads to DOMS? Lots of sets with the maximum resistance you can do for 20 reps. Why 20? You are also aiming for a maximum pump. Higher reps will do that. Besides, by keeping the resistance at the maximum you find that by the 4th set your reps reduce to 12 or so. Those are enough to generate a pump.

Vince, in your training experience, did you get stronger as well as grow?

The reason I ask is that when I did Mentzer's program to a "t" circa 1997-1999, I gained quite a bit of muscle, but then hit a brick wall.  Then I made the silly mistake of thinking I could eat my way through plateaus.  How wrong I was.  I got more adipose tissue as a reward.

I am beginning to train regularly again (I have never fully stopped resistance training), and want to get as big/strong as I can before I turn 40.

I just meant that it only took a small amount of games during his first year played before the mega hype began to build. I disagree about Jordan not having a lot of hype before he came to the NBA. He played three years at North Carolina and it was pretty apparent that he was special. Which makes drafting Sam Bowie ahead of him all the more laughable.

The only person able to keep Michael Jordan under 20 points a game was Dean Smith.

Rheo Blair was a big fan of tomatoes.

He used to advocate them on top of a ricecake as a snack.

I found his advocacy of rice cakes odd considering his low carb stance.

13  Getbig Main Boards / Gossip & Opinions / Re: Working out while sore from previous workout? on: March 25, 2014, 08:49:34 AM

From my experience the vast majority of guys who bodybuild believe the wrong things. The fact is most of you are NOT growing or are doing so imperceptively slowly. Instead of thinking the soreness is a nuisance it is actually a signal that some remodelling is occurring. That is, you are growing as long as you eat enough. No supplements are required just a balanced diet. When you train regularly but seldom induce any DOMS then you are merely maintaining your size and not increasing it. You have to avoid complete recovery because then it will be harder to trigger growth because of the repeated bout effect. It is easier to keep a muscle growing by training it every 3rd day with a program that ends with multiple sets (6) with the maximum resistance for 20 to 10 reps. Start with 20 reps and end with 10 to 12 with the same weight after the third set. Do not use these muscles again in the two rest days but if you were training arms then do legs. Try this for from 2 to 4 weeks then change your program. Your connective tissue needs the rest but the muscles probably not. You have to avoid injuries at all costs. Don't do deads, upright rows, benching and perhaps hacks. More later if anyone is interested.

Does this have to do with homeostasis?

Vince, I have been pondering your theory for some time, as I was a pure Mentzerite, and got quite strong doing his protocols.

Trouble is, I looked little different from the base I established.  Yet I was deadlifting 405x8 (perfect form).

I am back training after being very sporadic, and have started off what would be considered "light", and am already seeing results.

23  Getbig Main Boards / Gossip & Opinions / Re: Crossfit on: January 13, 2014, 09:34:44 AM
Better than what? If you want to balance on Swiss balls moving weights around or perform ballistic almost acrobatic feats than Cross Fit is vastly superior. If you want to improve health, fitness and muscular strength then there are much better and safer ways to do it.

I don't considered Cross Fit to be a fitness protocol as such, although you have to be very fit to perform it, just like I don't consider MMA to be a fitness protocol though you have to be in incredible shape to be good at it. As Arthur Jones pointed out, there's a difference between displaying strength and fitness and developing it. Performing a one rep max on the bench press is a display of your strength but I don't think anyone will argue that doing one rep max is the optimal way to develop muscular size and strength.

Pellius, if I recall correctly, you are a Mentzerite.

So am I.

I believe we are on exactly the same page.

I hate how people say Crossfit is better than Nautilus.

Nautilus started a virtual revolution.  And it was SAFE.

I know some very good athletes that were directed towards Crossfit.  Each and every one of them has nagging injuries at the very least, some serious injuries at the worst.

Coach and I may disagree about proper strength training protocols (I don't think a WSB template applies to most athletes, as it is a program geared towards equipped lifters who powerlift/compete in organizations with bastardized definitions of what a squat is (barely parallel at best, wide stance; sumo deadlifting, etc.)

However, it is MALPRACTICE to injure your athlete in the gym.  A strength and conditioning coach is there to better prepare their athlete not only for the athletic endeavor, but to prevent injury/downtime from injury.

Crossfit overstepped its bounds when it marketed itself as a "sport" unto itself.

The only gym owner I know who started out as Crossfit who is very successful is the one who went and got Olympic Lifting Certifications, and he makes sure that he doesn't take the middle aged housewife and go full throttle with the program.
