That picture above at Manny Perry (I think) looking over at Persons legs is precious. Person was always able to get in phenomenal shape with an amazing small waist but could never get his calves up to par. I applaud him for making the most out of what he had.

Joe, Olympus Gym? Jeez I used to pass that place and always thought it was just a Spa type of place. I didnít know it was a place that had serious guys in it.

I have copies of both that Health and Strength magazine with Kuzo Sudo in it and that Muscle Digest with Steve Romanelli.

FigoÖ címon dude I canít go public with who the cannonball was.

Hey whoís this animal?

dammit,  these guys were like on another planet to me. and you guys were training with them. i did everything wrong, not having a clue how to train. i wonder how i coulda looked with a mentor Huh

From the few pics I've seen, it doesn't look like you did everything wrong. Maybe you should have mentored some guys. This is where some white punk on the board all of 160 pounds  calls you the N word or says "no homo".
103  Getbig Main Boards / Gossip & Opinions / Re: "The Mecca",When It Really Was "The Mecca" on: November 24, 2011, 01:34:16 PM
Are you kidding me,I`m glad you Shep,Stunt and Haz are in the guys were there for a lot of legendary shit.

Wes amazingly I didn't really realize how legendary it was at the time. I just loved training and like meeting the guys and learning from them. I never really cared about competing (even though I did). I just wanted a good build. How the heck did I ever get to meet and train with some of the best in the World? I'm still trying to figure that one out.
104  Getbig Main Boards / Gossip & Opinions / Re: "The Mecca",When It Really Was "The Mecca" on: November 24, 2011, 01:05:54 PM
OMG Stunt. Wynn Paris... talk about colorful characters. What a nutcase. The guy had the lock on the juice bars for Jack LaLanne European health spa's when it was run by Ray Wilson and his group. One of the managers told me Wynn would show up at key meetings in his bathrobe. After meeting him a few times I believe it.

CF Smith came around Ray Mentzer's Gym a few times. He was a huge calorie is just a calorie guy and would get in shape for a show eating Big Mac's. He and his wife went crazy on amphetamines from what I remember. That was around the same time as Mike Mentzer's bank incident. Maybe they got the same batch? Hmmmm.

Fun thread glad to see Crown and Wes into the mix.

Clearly huge, one of the biggest of his day

When/which comp did he turn pro?

As to the transition from squatter to owner, as you said, I've wondered bout that before too..

He turned Pro at a Mr. World competition in Mexico. He used to hang with a bunch of wise guys back in Rochester and he was a huge gear connection himself. That's why everyone would say I'm going over to see Dr. Peter and get my medication. He always referred to gear as "my medi--kay--tion. Then he'd do the Grymko laugh.

His portion of the down payment on Gold's was not a huge amount of money (something like $14k). The building was leased, the equipment was run down, there was no Gold's licensing and the former owners wife had just passed from cancer (or was about to). Pete brought in Ed Conners and another guy but that guy didn't stay and Tim Kimber (from Rochester) bought in and became the 3rd partner.

Pete brought in his brother Paul as a salesman and Ed had the legal work done on the licensing program. They struggled to stay afloat the first year or two because members were leaving due to the equipment being in such poor repair. Three things turned it around. The first was Hart-to-Hart moving the gym to the bigger and newer location (where it is today). I guess they paid the guy's a nice sum of money to use the gym on an episode (I was an extra) the second was they struck the deal with Flex Equipment company to use Gold's as a showcase for their equipment so when potential Gold's licensee's would come to town, they'd see a gym-full of nice new equipment. Third, Pete told me that most of the money they made from Gold's came from the sale of T-shirts, etc. At one point Gold's Gym T-shirts were #2 in the World in their category with only Harley Davidson ahead of them. They were giving them away to Hulk Hogan, Stallone, David Lee Roth and everyone had to have a Gold's Gym T-Shirt.

People all talk about how crazy Pete was but many forget Pete had a quality thatís essential in business. Charisma times 10. Pete always had an amazing ability to make people laugh and feel good about themselves and people of influence loved being around him. The new owners were able to buy the gym but they couldnít buy that.
106  Getbig Main Boards / Gossip & Opinions / Re: "The Mecca",When It Really Was "The Mecca" on: November 24, 2011, 01:49:38 AM
I believe I remember hearing that years later also.

Like the rest of the contestants were all natural!!  Grin

Pete used to talk about it, University of Rochester. He also used to supply half the Eastern Seaboard with shipments from Europe. That was before he became an owner of Gold's.

I met Bob once when I was writing for the Journal of Longevity. One heck of a nice guy. RIP

Christ,you`re dwarfing those guys!!

I'll second that.

Wes, Haz, figo, stunt... the Peter Grymko stories I could tell! I had dinner with Pete and his wife 4-5 years ago in their home in Apple Valley. Fun, fun time and the guy does not change. I think he cracked out the pot within about 20 minutes of greeting me and my business partner at the door (I didn't partake -stuff messes with me). We were out his way for a meeting so hhe invited us over. He was mentioned in those articles I posted but not by name. It talked about one guy and crazy dosages.

I got a very strong impression that Pete got hit up for every business venture out there and maybe that's what happened between Kieth and Pete.

Pat Hayes had a great build. He trained at Gold's for a while. Another guy I thought had all the right tools to become great was Casey Schneider but he never seemed to make the top placings. I got a few workouts in with Bob Reis. The guy was amazingly strong (at least compared to other guys I trained with).

Anyone remember Marty and Pete Vranicar from the East Coast? I never met them or saw them out here but they had great builds.

WES! What means this ------> I hope Stunt`s paying attention here!

Did I miss something?

Hey, MAX! I was with Ernie that year but can't recall how he placed and who won the wt classes and the overall. Let me know if you can recall.

Ernie did manage to win the Jr USA and the Jr Nationals within the same year if I recall correctly .... and the only other person to do that was Tony Peirson. (Spelling??)

One of those years when the contestants had to sit before the judges to see if they could talk correctly (or something like that), Pete G. arrived at the official hotel (Santa Monica Holiday Inn by the 15 freeway) only to discover that he had to show his membership card (AAU? or NPC?) before he could proceed.

He saw me and asked if I'd run back to the gym and look through his desk and try to find it. Took a while but I did find it and got it back to him just as he was scheduled to show the judges that he in fact could speak good English and eloquently enough to pass the 'test'.

The next year they didn't do that no more.

1980 Mr. America was held at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium.

Shit,I am forced to train on a college campus, tons of kids and blue haired old ladies, and me training my ass off while they stare at me like I`m the one doing all the stupid exercises.  Sad

Only 2 gyms in town, both on college campus`.

They just look at me like I'm crazy. I guess they figured it out.
112  Getbig Main Boards / Gossip & Opinions / Re: "The Mecca",When It Really Was "The Mecca" on: November 22, 2011, 07:20:00 PM
YES, MAX! I'm very serious, And I'm also honest and loyal and help old ladies get to the other side ..... all those other Boy Scout attributes.

But if you ever decided to challenge me with dates after Columbus landed, I'd have a problem answering honestly.

If I had  known about this unknown Bodybuilding X person a short while back, I would have inquired about him because I was in the IronMan studio most of the day and made it a point to meet everyone in the office while waiting for a friend's all day photo session to conclude.

The IronMan staff is a GREAT bunch of people though and may want to keep X's ID secret for some unknown reason.

And I have yet to read that article, but plan to do so this evening.

Well he works out of his house (rumor has it) but he does make it down to the studio for a few hours once a week. He's probably sorry he missed you.  Wink

When I first moved to LA and Gold's was on 2nd street. Ernie Santiago was in town for the AAU Mr. America in his last week of prep. Guy looked great.
113  Getbig Main Boards / Gossip & Opinions / Re: "The Mecca",When It Really Was "The Mecca" on: November 22, 2011, 05:16:05 PM

Max, those two interviews with bodybuilder X and the interview by someone named David I believe about Danny Padilla  were some of the best things that I have read in Ironman.  This is from a Ironman reader for over 30 years.

Someone named David and bodybuilder X would probably thank you if he read your post.  Wink

I think BB-X is a great writer and needs to pen more stuff for IM !!  Wink

Iím sure heíd thank you as well Tim.  Grin

He actually has written about 2 dozen cover interviews with Proís and up and coming amateurs, probably about another two dozen articles on nutrition and dozens of supplement advertisements.

Rumor has it he has been afflicted with a flavor for Latin women and thus his near brush with death. Cool Still the affliction has a grip on him.

WES, MAX .... I have yet to read that IronMan article but I can most likely find out who Bodybuilder X is or was.

I've known everyone you mentioned, MAX, excluding Bannout for some unknown reason, and I'll do my best to make a phone call or two and ask about this unknown, mysterious stranger.

No guarantees though, but it would give me a chance to renew some old time friendships.

You aren't serious, are you?
115  Getbig Main Boards / Gossip & Opinions / Re: "The Mecca",When It Really Was "The Mecca" on: November 22, 2011, 03:37:52 PM
Thanks David.....I really wish you and Joe would start a thread going into lots of detail about how you guys trained with these greats.

Throw in some pics and it would be one of the best threads ever posted here.........or anywhere!!

All the best bud!!  Smiley

There was a two part interview in Iron Man about a year ago. Steve Holman interviewed some guy going by "Bodybuilder X". Apparently this X dude trained with Padilla, Grant, Bannout, the Mentzers, Rick Valente and Bob Chick. He was also trained by Rory. I'm not sure who this X guy is but he was very candid and open about everything.  Wink

Here is part 1 (I don't think the picture is really Bodybuilder X)

Part 2

Dang Tim I've never seen those shot of Victor Terra... unreal.

You asked me about training with Rory, Aranita and the crew. I didn't actually train with Rory as I did with Danny, B. Grant, Samir, Mike and Ray. I'd meet Rory at Gold's once a month, he'd look at my training logs, eating etc and then design my next routine. I did meet Jon, Bob Paris, Matt? (Bob's partner). I may have met Joe (Coach) at the time but can't say for sure. I was also working at a Night Club in Whittier at the time right around the corner from Uptown Gym where Rory trained much of the time. Man I loved those small, dungeon type, old school gyms. That's what Barlow's and Muscle Mill (both in Torrance) were like. I never trained at Astro Gym (where Coach trained) but it was on the way to Dr. Kerr's office... err oops... of course that was just a rumor I heard... yeah that's it... a rumor.
117  Getbig Main Boards / Gossip & Opinions / Re: Pic of the uncrown no 1 Bodybuilder in the world right now. on: November 22, 2011, 01:45:00 AM
How the hell can the guy ever be a successful bodybuilder without shaving his head?  Undecided
118  Getbig Main Boards / Gossip & Opinions / Re: "The Mecca",When It Really Was "The Mecca" on: November 18, 2011, 01:58:18 AM
Jon Aranita..............use d to train with Rory Leidelmeyer,Bob Paris, and Coach who posts here on getbig.

Fucking guy was awesome but always came in 2nd. to someone else andnever got his pro-card!  Sad

Lee Labrada was one of the guys Jon placed second to. Agreed Jon was awesome and strong.

Best of luck Wes!
120  Getbig Main Boards / Gossip & Opinions / Re: Bob Chick - what have you learned from him? on: November 09, 2011, 01:07:42 AM
This is kind of trivial, but it meant a lot to me at the time.

I`ve always admired the way Bob stuck to his guns and never quit trying for his pro-card even though back in the day,his class was fully loaded with some of the best amatuer bodybuilders ever.

I`ve met and talked with Bob on several occasions although we really don`t know each other per se`..................the first time I met him was in 2000 in Pittsburgh at the Masters Nats.

He was with Jeremy Freeman and some hot fitness chick who I can`t seem to remember right now..................... ...I asked Bob if I could get a pic of the three of them and he replied,"Why not get in the photo with us".

He grabbed a passerby that he knew and we took the pic together.

Lots of other pros could have gave a shit, but Bob was cool.

Then he embarassed me onstage in Rochester when they fucked up my music!!  Grin

Just kidding Bob,you`re a great MC and a good guy to boot, plus a helluva` bodybuilder.

Tim... that's my experience with Bob as well. He often tries to include people.

When I used o go home to Rochester and he was still living there. He always asked me to join him and Larry Baker in a workout and always invited me to get something to eat with the entire crew after a workout. There were often 7-10 gym members walking into the Country Buffet. It meant a lot to me to be included in that.
121  Getbig Main Boards / Gossip & Opinions / Re: Bob Chick - what have you learned from him? on: November 08, 2011, 08:06:28 PM
Good information.

That was MY interview with Bob in Iron Man!

anyone familiar with steve holman from ironman magazine? is he for real or what?

Yes. Steve knows his stuff.
123  Getbig Main Boards / Gossip & Opinions / Re: BODYBUILDING AND FIGURE NEED TO BE SEPARATE FROM PHYSIQUE AND BIKINI on: November 05, 2011, 07:00:45 PM
Used to be like 6 or 7 people turned Pro a year. It actually meant you achieved something. Now it's like a gazillion Pro's and all they accomplished was wearing a bikini or a pair of shorts and getting their body fat under 8%.

I like women in bikini's but THAT makes them a Pro? Next thing you know they'll want top be treated as equals.  Cry

124  Getbig Main Boards / Gossip & Opinions / Re: uncrowned Mr Olympia - the real winner of 1981 on: October 17, 2011, 12:20:13 AM

now you see how his knees are past his feet? i swear i'll never know what is the correct way to squat. Undecided

Danny loved to squat. He's kill me with 5 sets of 12.
125  Getbig Main Boards / Gossip & Opinions / Re: I FUCKING KNEW IT!! on: October 15, 2011, 12:53:12 AM
There's more than enough money in my neighborhood to cover the cost of his IMMEDIATE execution. We don't need californias inept government. besides, in california you're on death row for at least 20 years. tell me how it can be cheaper than $10 bullet or a $100 electric bill.

I'd rather he was stripped to his shorts, chained by his ankles behind a pickup truck and dragged about 5 miles an hour over course gravel for an hour then left to hear the sound of his own whimpering for 24 hours. Then if he lives, repeat the process for 40 days. No food and only salt water to drink. Pour vinegar over his wounds.
