4  Getbig Main Boards / Gossip & Opinions / NFL athlete & Getbigger - Ray Rice: suspended for 2 games on: Today at 10:42:08 AM
http://m.espn.go.com/wireless/story?storyId=11262500&brand=espnw

Mina Kimes
 ESPN The Magazine | July 25, 2014

There's no shortage of reasons to condemn the NFL for its pitifully inadequate two-game suspension of Ray Rice, the Baltimore Ravens running back who knocked his fiancée unconscious in a casino elevator in February.

I could write about the hypocrisy of Roger Goodell or the troubling message it sends to American women.

But if there's one lesson we can extract from Rice's suspension, it's that such arguments don't carry much weight with the NFL.

The league's two-game suspension of Ravens star Ray Rice is a joke, and sends a terrible message that the NFL doesn't take domestic violence seriously. Jane McManus

So, instead, let's look at Rice's slight punishment through the green-stained lens Goodell looks through every single day: money.

The NFL's financial success has reached new heights during Roger Goodell's tenure. And further growth is important to the commissioner: In 2010, he told team owners he aims to triple league revenue to $25 billion by 2027. That's more than companies such as Time Warner Cable, Xerox and General Mills made last year.

Goodell's goal is lofty, but reasonable. While many sports and entertainment providers have struggled to gain market share in an increasingly crowded field, the NFL's popularity has surged. Over the past decade, average viewership of prime-time NFL games has increased by 31 percent to 20.3 million, according to Nielsen. In 2013, every network that had broadcast games reported increased viewership. Most weeks, in fact, NFL games aren't just the most-watched sporting events on television -- they're the most watched thing on TV.

The league's success is astounding -- but it can't last forever. Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban's doomsday prediction that the "hoggy" league will become oversaturated and implode within 10 years may have been overly dire, but there was a grain of truth to his prophecy. Football isn't a perpetual motion machine; it needs new external sources of energy to fuel its expansion.

As with any business, the NFL has two paths to potential growth. It can diversify its product line -- possible, but unlikely -- or it can go after new markets. Goodell's interest in putting a team in London makes it obvious that the league is pursuing the latter route.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell should have used the Ray Rice suspension as a chance to reach out to the most untapped segment of the football market: women.
Of course, it's always easier to grow at home. The lowest-hanging fruit, American men, may already be plucked, but there are still large swaths of the U.S. that haven't fully embraced football-underpenetrated segments of the market, in business-speak. The largest of those segments is female. The NFL says women make up about 45 percent of its fan base, while research firm Experian Simmons put the number at 36 percent. According to Nielsen, 35 percent of viewers of regular-season games last season were women.

That means women represent a huge growth opportunity. And the NFL knows it. It's why the league runs so many commercials targeting women and sticks pop-up boutiques inside stadiums, stocking them with pink jerseys and tank tops and something called a "Fanicure" nail polish set. Whatever you think of #nailgating, these efforts seem to be working: The NFL says sales of women's apparel have tripled over the past four years.

But marketing has its limits. People try new products for a number of reasons, ranging from quality to price. But brand loyalty, as any Apple stockholder will tell you, is driven by something deeper. Successful companies don't just sell goods and services -- they sell culture. They sell coolness (Nike) and wellness (Whole Foods) and manliness (Budweiser).

Football is no different. Women won't become fans of the NFL because of baby tees or theme nights. They'll embrace the league when they believe its values align with their own.

When the news about Rice broke yesterday, I saw scores of female football fans tweeting expressions of horror and disappointment. Several said they felt like the NFL had turned its back on them. Jets season ticketholder Naomi Lindower tweeted that she was disgusted with the decision.

"I'll always love football, but this just makes me mad," Lindower says. The league's actions, she adds, will make it harder for her to recruit other female fans, including her own daughter. "They'll say, 'Why should I be interested in a sport that doesn't support women?'"

The NFL should ask the same question -- if not for moral reasons, then for financial ones.

Yes, but you completely miss my point... just like all the other MSM zombified sheeple.

You really need to wake the fuck up.

If this is coming directly from russia itself and not its militant proxies in ukraine, it could be a pretty big deal...

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2014/07/24/obama-administration-russia-firing-artillery-at-ukraine-military-targets/

Obama administration officials said Thursday that Russia is firing artillery from its own territory into Ukraine to hit Ukrainian military sites, pointing to escalating Russian involvement in the deadly conflict.

"This clearly is a military escalation," Pentagon spokesman Col. Steve Warren said, adding there is no question that Russian military -- as opposed to Russia-backed separatists -- are firing the shots.

State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf first made the accusation during a press briefing earlier Thursday. She also claimed Moscow is boosting its military shipments to pro-Russian separatists.

"We have new evidence that the Russians intend to deliver heavier and more powerful multiple rocket launchers to separatist forces in Ukraine and have evidence that Russia is firing artillery from within Russian to attack Ukrainian military positions," Harf told reporters.

She said the evidence derived from "human intelligence information" but declined to elaborate, saying it would compromise sources and methods of intelligence collection.

The Pentagon, though, confirmed her account, and said Russia has been firing artillery for several days now.

The allegations come amid an increasingly bitter war of words between Washington and Moscow over the crisis in Ukraine and conflicting claims over the downing of a Malaysian passenger jet over eastern Ukraine last week.

The U.S. repeatedly has accused Russia of stoking the Ukraine rebellion and has said it believes separatists shot down the Malaysian plane, killing nearly 300 people, with a Russian provided surface-to-air missile.

Harf said Wednesday the ultimate responsibility for the downing of the plane rests with Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Russian government.

Meanwhile, additional military aircraft carrying remains of victims from the Malaysian plane disaster arrived in the Netherlands on Thursday, while Australian and Dutch diplomats joined to promote a plan for a U.N. team to secure the crash site which has been controlled by pro-Russian rebels.

On Monday, the U.N. Security Council unanimously approved a resolution proposed by Australia demanding that rebels cooperate with an independent investigation and allow all remaining bodies to be recovered.

On CNN now

Donetsk, Ukraine (CNN) - The United States said Thursday it has proof that Russia is firing into Ukraine.

Also Thursday, Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk and his Cabinet announced their resignation in what Ukrainian political experts said was an expected development. Yatsenyuk and his Cabinet will remain in place as an acting government until elections in October.

The Ukrainian government has been battling pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine. More than 400 people have died in the fighting, the government has said.

"We have new evidence that the Russians intend to deliver heavier and more powerful multiple rocket launchers to the separatist forces in Ukraine and have evidence that Russia is firing artillery from within Russia to attack Ukrainian military positions," said State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf.

10  Getbig Main Boards / Gossip & Opinions / Browns Fan urinates on Art Modell's grave on: July 23, 2014, 06:20:47 PM
http://m.espn.go.com/nfl/story?storyId=11253861

A Cleveland Browns fan posted a video on YouTube showing himself urinating beside Art Modell's grave in Pikesville, Maryland.

The unidentified man in the video, titled "Browns Fan 'Pays Respects' to Modell," arrives at the gravesite dressed in a Baltimore Ravens Ed Reed jersey.

He then pulls it off to reveal a Browns Lyle Alzado No. 77 jersey and apparently urinates on Modell's grave out of the bottom of his pants leg using a catheter.

Afterward, he speaks to the camera.

"You know, Art, when you ... tried to kill the Cleveland Brownie, you didn't do so good, the Browns fans wouldn't let you, you piece of s---," he says. "I'm in rat land, and I'm going to use the words you used a few years ago.

"As far as pissing on your grave, I had no choice."

When Modell moved the team to Baltimore in 1996, he said he had "no choice."

The video has received more than 10,000 hits. A spokeswoman for the Druid Ridge Cemetery told The Baltimore Sun that the Browns fan's decision to urinate beside Modell's grave was "disappointing and disrespectful."

Police did not immediately respond to the paper on the situation and its legality.

Modell died in 2012.

There are very few that CAN handle the downsize. Look at Cormier wearing a varsity jacket in the summer. He was such a confident guy and now that the body no longer looks in proportion to his agromegalion head, he feels insecure and needs to make his body appear bigger somehow.

And a drug-free Dexter would be way smaller than Cormier is currently.
