These old school cheesy sales tactics don't work anymore in todays society. Last time I bought a new car I offered them 200 above dealer cost and got the car. This will only work on new cars. Go in informed tell them this is your offer and it's take it or leave it, PERIOD. There are too many other dealers out there that will take your offer.
cost or invoice? Unless it was a very low end model you probably mean invoice. and yes, the buyer should be ready to walk out.

Tell the sales person that approaches you that you need your space but will signal to them if you have questions and tell them you won't let them get skated (this means you will use them when you are ready to deal and they will receive the commission).
And/Or go on a Sunday to decide which cars you specifically want more information on and to drive and then go in during the week.
