Good news and bad news... the good news is 68 Senators have decided that the epidemic of gun violence in this country is a worthwhile enough matter for the U.S. Senate to at least talk about it for a while. The bad news is this is what passes for good news nowadays.

At yesterday’s unveiling of the background check deal, Senator Joe Manchin said “all personal transfers are not touched whatsoever.” No matter what you think when you hear that, when a criminal who wants a gun hears it, they think “Good, there’s a way around it.” The deal will exempt “person to person” transfers. I remind you that conservatives consider corporations to be persons. Will they exempt a transfer from the “person” named “Remington Arms Company, Inc.? Oh, and of course conservatives think that fetuses have “personhood.” If a woman would fail a background check, can the seller just claim that they were actually selling the gun to the fertilized egg in her womb?

The chief lobbyist for the NRA says that they are “unequivocally opposed” to the gun control bill. Well that’s the most positive thing I’ve heard about it so far. The NRA says it will break its standard policy and will score Senators on procedural votes such as the final cloture motion. The NRA wants this bill dead. It’s not good enough for us, but it’s still way too good for the NRA.

Yesterday Rand Paul made a speech at Howard, University, a historically black college. Rand claimed that he had always supported the 1964 Civil Rights Act. It’s bad enough that Rand Paul has to assure people that he has always supported the 1964 Civil Rights Act. And it’s far, far worse that he has to lie to do it. Rand’s problem is with the parts of the Civil Rights Act that require private businesses not to discriminate. In Rand Paul’s world, the biggest “civil right” that people should have is the right to deny the civil rights of other people.

Paul told the crowd that recent GOP efforts at voter suppression were no big deal. Well, they obviously weren’t enough to win, but that wasn’t for a lack of trying. He said that people who compare the recent ID laws to the voting abuses of the past, “demean the horror of what happened.” And by saying that, Paul is trying to demean the horror of what the GOP is doing right now! Rand, what is your point? That black people should embrace the GOP because these days the Republicans can’t do as much harm to African Americans as racists could do in the past?

*Thank you Benny B!

Obama Just Finished His Speech In Israel, And People Are Already Saying He Made History
Grace Wyler  Mar. 21, 2013

President Barack Obama delivered a bold message to young Israelis in Jerusalem Thursday, asking them to see the world through the eyes of their adversaries in the Middle East.

Addressing students at the Jerusalem Cultural Center, Obama called on a new generation of Israelis to take up the peace process — including halting settlement construction — and work harder toward achieving an independent Palestine.

Here is the key paragraph from his speech:

But the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and justice must also be recognized. Put yourself in their shoes – look at the world through their eyes. It is not fair that a Palestinian child cannot grow up in a state of her own, and lives with the presence of a foreign army that controls the movements of her parents every single day. It is not just when settler violence against Palestinians goes unpunished.  It is not right to prevent Palestinians from farming their lands; to restrict a student’s ability to move around the West Bank; or to displace Palestinian families from their home. Neither occupation nor expulsion is the answer. Just as Israelis built a state in their homeland, Palestinians have a right to be a free people in their own land.

The speech was remarkably blunt, particularly considering Obama's fraught relationship with Israelis and their prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu. At times, Obama even appeared to be trying to circumvent his Israeli counterpart, calling on his young audience to challenge political leaders on the peace issue.

" I can promise you this, political leaders will never take risks if the people do not push them to take some risks," he said. "You must create the change that you want to see. Ordinary people can accomplish extraordinary things."

The message was extraordinarily well-received, both by the audience and veteran Israel correspondents, many of whom are calling Obama's speech "historic."

Donald Trump has responded to Bobby Jindal’s comments about the Republicans being the “party of stupid” by calling Jindal stupid. According to Trump, “you don’t use the word stupid because the word stupid is now going to be part of the vocabulary of the Democrats.” And the Democrats are already so far ahead in the vocabulary department!

The AR-15 assault rifle is the “musket of today” according to NRA President David Keene. That was the gun used in the Newtown massacre. I don’t recall many cases of the Founding Fathers using muskets to slaughter schoolchildren. For a lunatic to kill as many children as were killed in the Newtown massacre with a musket, they would have to pack about a pound of black gunpowder… and at least one meal, because this is going to take a while. And if the AR-15 is the musket of today, then the musket of 100 years from now will be a handheld laser death ray capable of wiping out all life on planet earth in a matter of seconds.

Keene says we shouldn’t punish 4 million AR-15 owners “because two or three people misused a firearm.” Oh! So now walking into an elementary school and slaughtering school kids is considered “misuse” of a firearm! Gee, if the killer had survived and been put on trial, do you think the charge against him would have been “misuse of a firearm”?

A Christian radio host claims that “the wombs of women on the pill” are “embedded” with “dead babies.” Radio host Kevin Swanson said “wombs of women who have been on the birth control pill effectively have become graveyards for lots and lots of little babies.” So ladies, stop using birth control… unless you want to have a haunted uterus. Why, even big strong men will be afraid to go near it after dark!

Eric Cantor is on a charm offensive, which is a little like Donald Trump being part of a brainstorming session. Today Cantor is delivering a speech that is being billed a major shift in tone for the Republican Party. Guys, you need more than a shift in tone. Your base needs a shift in skin tone... something a shade darker than lily white.

Deficit projected to shrink considerably
By Steve Benen -  Tue Feb 5, 2013

We won't know for sure what this year's federal budget deficit is going to be until the end of the fiscal year, but if the projections are accurate, a whole lot of talking points are going to need revisions.

The federal budget deficit in 2013 is projected to be $845 billion, the first time the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office has forecast a deficit below $1 trillion under President Obama.

The reduction in the budget deficit comes after Congress approved higher tax rates on households with annual income above $450,000.

The CBO also projects the deficit will shrink again next year to $430 billion.

Why is this politically significant? For one thing, congressional Republicans said raising taxes on the wealthy would not improve the nation's finances, and it appears we now have even more evidence to the contrary. They also seem to enjoy complaining about "trillion-dollar deficits every year," and will have to drop the line from their repertoire.

What's more, it appears the deficit will have been cut nearly in half -- both in real terms and as a percentage of GDP -- since President Obama inherited a massive budget shortfall from the Bush/Cheney administration.

Of course, there's also the matter of the fiscal debate -- as GOP lawmakers continue to insist Washington take the deficit seriously, and adopt austerity measures intended to close the budget shortfall in a hurry, we're reminded today that the deficit is already shrinking.

For the record, I still think it's a mistake to assume that shrinking deficits are good news. There's a competing school of thought -- which I'm sympathetic to -- that suggests the deficit is currently too small, and that given economic conditions, interest rates, and the current yield of Treasuries, we should be borrowing far more and investing that money in job creation.

But at least as far as the establishment conversation goes, we should at least have a fiscal debate based on facts -- and the facts are that the deficit is shrinking in a hurry.

Neil Heslin, the father of a 6-year-old boy who was slain in the Sandy Hook massacre in Newtown, Conn., on Dec. 14, stoically faced down pro-gun activists last night.

More than 1,000 people attended a hearing before the Gun Violence Prevention Working Group at the Legislative Office Building in Hartford on Monday to share their views on gun control, USA Today reported. Among them was Heslin, who held a large framed picture of himself and his son Jesse as he urged officials to consider strengthening gun laws in Connecticut.

But as he gave his emotional testimony, pleading with lawmakers to improve mental health options and to ban assault weapons like the one Adam Lanza used to murder his child and 25 other people, his speech was interrupted by dozens of audience members, The Connecticut Post reported.

“I still can't see why any civilian, anybody in this room in fact, needs weapons of that sort. You're not going to use them for hunting, even for home protection," Heslin said.

Pro-gun activists responded by calling out: "Second Amendment!"

Undeterred, Heslin continued. "There are a lot of things that should be changed to prevent what happened."

Heslin's son, Jesse McCord Lewis, was described by friends as a happy child, The Post reported. A "little cowboy," Jesse reportedly liked to play with the fake horses at a local Western-themed restaurant. After he was shot and killed by Lanza, a line of police officers on horseback joined the motorcade at the boy's funeral.

"He was a boy that loved life. Lived it to the fullest…He was my son, he was my buddy, he was my best friend." Heslin said.

24  Getbig Main Boards / Politics and Political Issues Board / How Embarrassing! Forbes & WSJ Call Out Petey Schiff's BS In Tax Op-Ed on: December 10, 2012, 12:34:01 PM
What a f***** joke and embarrassment. First, his numbers (which are off by about a factor of 5000x) are called out as BS by Forbes. Then WSJ which published his crap op-ed is forced to issue a correction statement after fact-checking the 2nd time around. Ruppie, what a fail - fire your editor for even allowing this illiterate to write an op-ed, let alone one which is total BS.

Professional alarmist Peter Schiff takes to the pages of the Wall Street Journal to make the case that the income taxes in the 1950s weren't as confiscatory in practice as their high top marginal rates might make them sound in theory. I don't have a quarrel with his basic point, but in the process of making it, he mangles some key facts. And evidently no one at the Journal noticed:

In 1958, an 81% marginal tax rate applied to incomes above $1.08 million, and the 91% rate kicked in at $3.08 million. These figures are in unadjusted 1958 dollars and correspond today to nominal income levels that are at least 10 times higher... In 1958, approximately 28,600 filers (0.06% of all taxpayers) earned the $93,168 or more needed to face marginal rates as high as 30%. These Americans—genuinely wealthy by the standards of the day—paid 5.9% of all income taxes.

In reality, those $1.08 million and $3.08 million are adjusted for inflation. The Tax Foundation has all the gory details here. If you scroll down to page 51, you'll see that the nominal cutoffs for the 81% and 91% brackets were $140,000 and $400,000, respectively. In 2012 dollars, those figures are around $1 million and $3 million. Similarly, the 30% tax bracket started at an income of $12,000, which is around $93,000 in today's dollars. In 1958, $12,000 was more than twice the median household income, so these were certainly affluent households. But "genuinely wealthy" seems to be over-stating the case.

I don't have time to double-check the other figures in his piece, but I suspect that (for example) more than 28,600 income tax filers had incomes above $12,000 in 1958, which could undermine his broader argument. If any readers have those statistics handy I'd be interested in seeing them.

This is the second time this year I've noticed serious factual errors on the WSJ's editorial page. They might want to invest in a more rigorous fact-checking process.

Update: The Journal has corrected the online version of the story. As I suspected, the number of Americans subject to the 30 percent income tax rate was 2 million, not 28,600. Similarly, the number of Americans paying the 81 percent marginal tax rate turns out to be around 10,000, not 236.

Editor's note: This article has been amended as per the following correction:

Peter Schiff's Dec. 7 op-ed, "The Fantasy of a 91% Top Income Tax Rate," included some faulty data due to a misreading of IRS tax tables.

In 1958, an 81% marginal tax rate applied to income of $140,000 and the 91% rate at $400,000 for married couples, which would correspond to income levels about eight times higher today. The article misstated the income thresholds and the comparison to income today.

In the same year, roughly 10,000 of the nation's 45.6 million tax filers had income subject to a rate of 81% or higher. The number is an estimate and is inexact because the IRS tables list the number of tax filers by income ranges, not precisely by the number who paid at the 81% rate. The original article said the number of such filers was 236.

Also in 1958, about two million filers (4.4% of all taxpayers) earned the $12,000 for married filers needed to face marginal rates as high as 30%. These Americans paid about 35% of all income taxes but could not all be defined as genuinely wealthy. The article misstated these numbers.
