176  Getbig Misc Discussion Boards / Powerlifting / Strongman / Re: Squat depth and internet judging....solved on: July 20, 2009, 07:32:49 PM
You could design the string into the clothing and use a still camera set at parallel to take a shot at the bottom of the lift.  You can't argue with pictures.
177  Getbig Bodybuilding Boards / Training Logs and Info / Re: Injuries and why NOT to work through them (starts pg 11) on: July 20, 2009, 07:11:52 PM
Has anyone ever thought of strapping a level to their leg to see if the hit parallel? Grin Strap it in tight from knee to hip, take it for a ride to make sure it stays, and thats all the judgement anyone would ever need to judge a squat. Perhaps using a string level and two loops that are sewn into the suit at the desired points?

I think this is a real option and it would stop all the internet judges dead in their tracks.

That could be crazy enough to work. Grin  I may actually use a similiar method to check exact parallel for myself and build three box heights depending on how low I want to go with it.  It would be simple to have a camera set at parallel take a picture of the string as the lifter hit bottom and determine if they were low enough.  I'll put some pics on my training log once I get this done.

Better yet, have the squatter hold the squat at the bottom position while someone comes out to check for level.  Grin

6 foot.

How much does 11" put you below parallel?  I'm on a 15" box and I'm 2" below, although I have long legs for my height (5"11).

Or do you train this low so that a competition depth squat is that much easier?
179  Getbig Bodybuilding Boards / Training Logs and Info / Re: splinterhands with pictures on: July 19, 2009, 11:16:48 AM
Today's squat day all on 15" box.  I checked it from every angle and it's about 2" below parallel. I did feel like I was a little more flexable and able to hit the box easier although coming up just sucks.  I just don't have the "feel" of really pushing the bar up yet.  I'm just amazed at the strength difference between my squat max and my deadlift max.

150lbs X 8reps
150lbs X 5 reps
220lbs X 3 reps
270lbs X 2 reps
320lbs X FAIL  I think that's the first squat fail I've had in a long time and it's not a great feeling. Luckily I had the safety bars close so it wasn't that bad.

Box Squats (11" box)

How tall are you?

Today's bench press

150lbs X 10 reps
220lbs X 2 reps
270lbs X 1 rep
150lbs X 13reps
150lbs (+62lbs chain) X 5 reps

I'm staying pretty consistant but gaining very slowly.  My lats and back were still sore from my deadlifts yesterday so that may have bothered me some.  However 270 with a pause at the bottom felt pretty solid. Smiley

Today.  Close grip bench presses

150lbs X 5 reps
150lbs X 5 reps
215lbs X 3 reps
240lbs X 2 reps (PR)
250lbs X 2 reps  (Bigger PR)

My triceps are really responding to the heavy close grips.  The chain workouts I've been doing have really added power at the bottom of my lifts.  If I can get my chest to catch up then I may be breaking 300lbs easier that I thought.  I'm amazed at the amount of strength I've added without adding that much muscle.  Once I reach my strength goals, I may do a 4-6 week bodybuilding phase just to see what I can look like.

I may add a daily boxing workout for a few months to help cut out some of the excess fat.  My only focus lately has been adding as much strengh as possible.

15 inches.  It's below parallel but not as much as I thought at first.  Just for fun I did a few sets sumo and had trouble even getting down to it.  I'm very weak at the bottom.

You're a strong little dude.  The deadlift was almost 3X your bodyweight!

I don't think you have to verify the plates are real on a 225lb bench though. Smiley

I can't get the link to work.

I had a little "twinge" in my left bicep my last deadlift workout. Sad  It scared the hell out of me but apparently nothing was damaged.

Bench press today.  I decided to do two board presses.

150lbs X 10 reps
220lbs X 3reps
220lbs X 3reps
270lbs X 1rep
300lbs X 1rep Smiley
220lbs + 55lbs chains X 3reps
220lbs +55lbs chains X 3reps

I had a little shoulder pain that went away after warm ups.  I may need to go easy the next bench day and give my shoulders a little break.  I'm not 20 anymore. Angry

That's the first board presses I've done in about 20 years.  We used to do "towel" presses using a taped up towel about the size of two boards.  I got 330 on a towel press back in the day, although my form is much better and smoother now then back then.  I'd be afraid I'd break ribs and dislocate my shoulders with the "form" I used to have.  Grin

The good news is that I'm almost at my strongest although I don't "look" nearly as good at 190 as I did at 180. Angry

Today's deadlift.

I scrapped the Coan for now...  Maybe later?

150lbs X 5reps
220lbs X 3reps
270lbs X 3reps
320lbs X 2reps
320lbs (+55lbs chain) X 1rep
370lbs X 1
370lbs X 1
410lbs X 1 (slightly tweaked left bicep) Embarrassed  I gave it a few minutes and I guess I just very slightly tweaked a nerve or something.  It feels fine except slight tingle, not sore or painful at all just a little tingle.
410lbs + (55lbs chain)=  Fail Grin  I was feeling good, just not THAT good.

I also saved the belt for the last few sets.  This finishes up my first cycle of my new workout.  I "accidently" Wink cut up my good tow chain today.  That gives me a total of 55lbs of chain.
192  Getbig Bodybuilding Boards / Training Logs and Info / Re: splinterhands with pictures on: July 04, 2009, 10:26:36 AM
Thanks Rip.

I just started using the chains but I really like them.  They keep you really pushing through the entire press and make you really pop it at the bottom to get momentum.

Close Grip Bench Presses

I lowered the weights but completed the reps as fast as possible

150 X 5
150 X 5
150 X 5
150 X 5 added 40lbs chain
170 X 5 added 40lbs chain
170 X 5 added 40lbs chain

Good stuff, except the a-ha (take me on) music during the middle of bench presses. Grin

Is there a reason your head comes up as the weights go down?

It looks like you're getting your deadlifting rythym back after the one disaster you had.
195  Getbig Bodybuilding Boards / Training Q&A / Re: close grips on: July 01, 2009, 08:53:02 AM
hey folks.....

when performing close grips, do you prefer an ez curl bar or the 45 pound olympic straight bar?Huh?

I do them with a straight bar.  I don't go any closer than probably 12 inches between thumbs because any closer and it starts feeling a little wierd on the shoulders.  If you do them heavy, tuck the elbows in to your body at the bottom and that'll help take the pressure off your wrists as well.

Squat workout off a 16" box

150lbs X 5reps
150lbs X 5reps
220lbs X 5reps
230lbs X 5reps
230lbs X 5reps

Different and my inner thighs were actually on fire the last few reps.  I think I'll use these more.
197  Getbig Misc Discussion Boards / Powerlifting / Strongman / Peaking on: June 29, 2009, 06:01:26 PM
Should you try to peak on all three movements at the same time or stagger them so that if you're in week 10 of 12 on a bench press routine, your squats and deads are not also getting really tough also?  This is assuming that you don't have a meet coming up on a certain date.
198  Getbig Bodybuilding Boards / Training Logs and Info / Re: splinterhands with pictures on: June 29, 2009, 05:53:58 PM
Start of a new cycle today...

Benchpress (with 40lbs chain at top-probably 10lbs at bottom)

150lbs + 40lbs chain- 5reps
220lbs + 40lbs chain- 3reps
230lbs + 40lbs chain- 1 rep
250lbs + 40lbs chain-1 rep
260lbs + 40lbs chain- FAIL
220lbs +40lbs chain-2 reps
220lbs + 40lbs chain- 1 rep closer grip

GREAT WORKOUT!! Finally.  First time I've used chains and I really like them.  They smoothly increase resistance as you get stronger and really force you to get momentum at the bottom to complete the lift.
199  Getbig Misc Discussion Boards / Powerlifting / Strongman / Re: Your opinion on the Deadlift on: June 26, 2009, 07:08:42 PM
That actually explains a lot.  I'm strong on deadlifts but quite a bit weaker on squats and I have a longer leg, shorter back sort of build.
200  Getbig Bodybuilding Boards / Training Logs and Info / Re: splinterhands with pictures on: June 26, 2009, 07:00:47 PM
Also I noticed you were cutting back the accessory exercises.  I was actually thinking the same thing, that does seem like it may be a little excessive.  It would make a good back workout just with the accessory exercises.
