I think you're on the right track, but missed it by a bit.  It isn't getting older that makes you more apt to get knocked out, it's getting knocked out, esp if it's one of those eyes roll up in the head, don't come around for 5 minutes, knock-outs.  A very good friend of mine that is a much more accomplished fighter than I ever was told me after he got knocked out really badly once, it seemed like he lost the will to fight it.  Every fighter has been rocked and been close to going out, but to some degree you can fight your way back up.  After a really bad knock-out, it gets easier to just kind of let it happen.  See Chuck Liddell for another good example of this.  Chuck was a monster, now it seems like he gets knocked out if a stiff breeze hits his chin.

Or just go back to the old days when there were no weight classes, no rules (other than no biting or eye-gouging).  8 men enter, and it is a tournament style event where they fight until only one guy is left.  If you like weight classes, you could do the same thing, just have a single elimination tournament.

Obviously, if I say it is worse getting hit with a 4oz glove than an 10oz glove, I'm talking about all else being equal.  If not, you could argue that getting hit on the chin by Mike Tyson with a 16oz glove is worse than getting hit in the shoulder by an old lady with 4oz gloves.  Clearly, you'll get no argument on that.  If you honestly think that taking a left hook from Tyson wearing 4oz gloves is no worse than taking the same shot with a 12oz glove, all I can say is that we disagree.

This.  Add to the fact that there is a world of difference in the gloves.  How many punches do you think anyone could take from a pro boxer wearing 4oz gloves?  I have trained with both for years and 4oz gloves are much worse to get hit with than bare knuckles and so much worse than boxing gloves you would have to feel it to understand.  There isn't a person in the world that could get hit as many times in a 12 round fight as a boxer does if the opponent was wearing 4 ozers.

Boxing is dead.  Ask the average person who Klitschko is, not to mention Haye.
