I trained alongside Denis this past summer during a shoot in Vegas.  He's impressive!  Not sure he has everything to challenge the big guys, but his shape and structure is awesome.   In time he'll be a force.

If I could win the overall at either of the two shows, which I couldn't, I would rather have the USA title for the simple fact that the name to me sounds better.

Mr. USA vs Nationals overall champion, just my opinion though.

And Carlo, I hope to follow in your footsteps my friend. Great job! you know I think you kicked ass and deserve every bit of it.

Oh i see Carlo, you have faith in my brother you said "wait till you win the nationals"  I appreciate that. Peace guys! alex a

Yep Alex, I believe you will do it.  Remember something though, I never ever imagined when I began this quest that i'd turn pro...  That being said, now that I am, they (the IFBB) just happened to instill an under 202lbs. class.  Hmm.  Most of us in the lighter classes keep our weight down in order to make a certain class, right Alex?  If we let ourselves grow, we could easily compete in the 180's or so even the 190's..In due time of course.   I believe this class is going to help the sport.  I can foresee an increased fan base as the lighter competitors albeit not as freaky as the larger have an opportunity to compete.

Btw, Yes the Mr. USA sounds much better than a national championship, but there is no pro card, therefore, I'll take the nats.

Some great past national champions who've become great pros include Lee Haney, Shawn Ray, Kevin Levrone, Porter Cottrell,
not a bad bunch....

This is my opinion, The USA Title has more prestige than nationals.

I was a class winner at the 06 USA but no pro card.

Thats totally fine with me. After the show, I was very satisfied knowing i won my class at the USA.

I think the title is awesome.  The USA is held in Vegas each year at the end of July, such an awesome place for such a killer show!

Hmmmmm.  You think the USA is prestigious?  Wait till you win the Nationals. Smiley

thanks for the link. u looked really good (better than i thought), but just too small to compete with the big boys. thats all i meant in my first comment, as ur only as good as ur competition, and the ifbb pros are very good.

ifbb is all about back, and ur lats are weak, so work them. thats my main critisism/advice from looking at ur pics.

Thanks. Will do..  look for those improvements.... Next year.

that is from the same show? wow. how about posting the mandatories, if u have them. id love to eat my words

Here's the link.  I'm always open to constructive criticism.  I do need about 20 lbs or so to fill out, which I hope to gain over the next 2 years or so.  Could be fun now that there are no more weight class restrictions to adhere to.

GREAT pic, Carlo.  And a well deserved win to a man who well represents the bodybuilding community both on- and off-stage!!  Truly a professional in all senses of the word - a successful businessman AND IFBB PRO!!  A man who won his class and who has a lot of class!!  I'm sure he already has a full plate planned for 2008!!  Good Luck.  ^5

Thank you!  Sure do!  You all will here about it soon.  Thank you for the kind words.

Wow!  You guys are really a tough crowd.  Funny how you can win a class where thousands upon thousands of competitors throughout the country can't even qualify to compete in and STILL get no credit.  You guys may be right, maybe Dave, Leonardo and myself may never do anything as pros, but guess what, we are in title and accomplishment.  I can assure you all we are very proud of our accomplishments, it's dissappointing that we don't get the same credit as the "bigger" guys.  Yes, our careers may be as some of you say "over", but we all i'm sure acheived a tremendous goal.

Btw, goneaway, sorry you think my left "unflexed" quad looks like shit.  Here's a pic where it is flexed:  Hope you like this one.   ;)I'll trade this pic for a pic of your left quad.

Sorry, here's the pic.

Whoah!  Wow guys!  Thanks for all the support.  Robby, you've always been supportive of me, I can't thank you enough!  Bob, you said one day I'd be a great middleweight, well.... didn't happen, but how bout' that welterweight!!!  Listen guys, I can't thank all of you enough for being supportive.  A funny thing happened in 2002.  I began placing well at the national level.  It wasn't really til then that I believed that I could actually be a pro.  Now, understand, I never believed I could be Mr. O, nor do I believe that now, but I am proud, VERY proud to say that I am an IFBB pro.  Anyone who knows me, knows that I am first and foremost a businessman.  A businessman who just loves to compete.  I have very seldom put bodybuilding first and everything else second, when I have, I have failed miserably.  I can honestly say that I can compete because I work, I wouldn't change that for anything.  What am I going to do with my pro card many of you ask?  Well, first off, I will accept it graciously Grin, then, I will try, over the course of a year or two or three, to put on as much quality muscle as possible, all while I, get married, continue my business endeavors(you guys will here a lot more about this real soon!), with the blessing of God, begin a family, and then, if my finances allow it, I would love to compete in the IFBB as pro, especially since they now have an under 202 lbs. class.  It would be a pleasure to be able to say that I have competed with the world's elite bodybuilders.  Thanks again to all of you for the support and kind words!  Here is a pic from the evening finals where I weighed about 172lbs.

Hey Rob, Do you believe it!!!?Huh  Thanks man, I started preparing the day I got off of the stage at the nationals in 2006(after a slight asskicking).  It all worked out.  Thanks for believing in me.  Thanks to everyone who has been supportive throughout the years.  It's truly an amazing feeling.

Hey guys.  I see Bob's made it a point to stir some shit for me!  Bob, thanks for asking me to post those. Wink  Listen, those pics were taken 10 days out.  I am not making any excuses.  I will be ready come Friday night.  Alex is in UNBELIEVABLE condition and will do extremely well!!!  Since those pics made it to the boards, I will have more for you on Tuesday, only, in these pics I'll make sure my tan is up to par!  I am looking foward to the nationals and competing against the best in the country, just being there is an honor.  Peace.

He knew that its my first time to NY and i know No one there, he PICKED me up from the airport, followed up my lost bag that didnt arrive at the same time, Toke me to BOB Banham gym to do my work out there, set my meals to be done by CARLO the best chef in bodybuilding food, this man did so Much for me and still.... i thought to give him a Thread and THANK HIM so much for doing all that for NOTHING in return! and i am so honored to have him as a True Fan + friend and brother.... I'll be there photographing the event. Watch out for "The Hawaiian Hurricane" as he returns to the stage.

Wow Isaac, Chris Faildo!  He set the standard for conditioning amongst lightweights.  If he hasn't improved at all, he'll walk right through the entire show!  Look out for my girl, Nancy Fuentes, short class figure, she's significantly tighter than her overall win at the JanTana/King Kamali!  Of course, I'll be there.

Sorry guys,
I admit my comment was a little bit sarcastic, but ultimately I hope Americans do regain their reputation on the world Championships.

I appreciate your acknowledgement, however, bear in mind, Americans already are the most highly regarded bodybuilders in the world on a Professional level.  I am sure most people will agree with that.

1) By and large, The TU guys don't look bigger than pros from the 70s and 80s to me.

2) The TU guys being harder isn't necessarily an indicator of drug use. Remember that in the old days, bodybuilders used to get marked down for appearing too ripped at a contest. From what I've read, that happened to Franco Columbu and Vince Gironda.

Your friend forgot to explain a few things.

1) In the 80s, the class winners of the NPC Nationals represented the USA at the Universe. That's why they were so formidable. If I recall correctly, guys like Lee Haney, Bob Paris, and Gary Strydom were among the names of NPC National champs who went on to win their classes (if not the overall) at the Universe.

2) When the IFBB introduced drug-testing at the Universe in 1990, the NPC Nationals did the same. That was, however, the only time the Nationals was tested. Coincidentally (or not), the last time the NPC Nationals winners sent a team to the Univese was 1990, headed by overall champion, Alq Gurley (who, I think, won his class there).

3) In 1991, no official testing was done to field a Universe team. However, the NPC asked if anyone was interested in going to the Universe. Those who volunteered were drug-tested. Many of you know that, among the heavyweights, the highest placing guy who volunteered to go and pass the drug-test was Ronnie Coleman. He won his class at the World Championships, earned a pro card, and qualified for the 1992 Olympia.

By and large, the NPC Nationals class winners don't care about going to the World Amateur Championships/Universe, because they already have their pro cards and don't want to submit to any drug screening.

The Team Universe was created to solve that problem, thus making a desginated team to go to the World Championships. As I stated before, the TU became a pro qualifier itself, when the Universe kept being held in countries where the NPC felt there'd be a security risk to the American team.

Great points.  I'm glad you pointed them out.  Am I the only one that thought "musclecenter" was a bit sarcastic with his questioning of the americans placings?

It is fine to say that some are natural.  I'm sure some are.   But you said TU and the NPC take drug testing very seriously and therefore every class winner of TU is drug free.  That is simply not believable.

I guess i'll put it this way then, the npc and tu MAY take the drug testing "more serious" than our counterparts overseas. Which, that being said, may be the reason our athletes do not place better.   I don't remember where I stated that I believed "every" class winner is drug free, but I still believe "most" at Team U. are drug free.  I don't believe that that makes me delusional.....

25  Getbig Main Boards / Gossip & Opinions / Re: How can an overallwinner of US Team Universe only place12th in World Champio on: July 02, 2007, 12:29:34 AM
anyone can pass a polygraph test.  and it takes weeks to get back the results of a urine test.   But no one in Team U has been DQed for failing a urine test.   Not to mention that urine tests are easy to get around as well.   Now, with that pro card going to the winner of Team U, there is even more incentive to ignore the drug free rules.

the only way you can have truly drug free bodybuilding is year round random drug tests.  but at $200 a sample, no one is going to pay for that.

Your initial premise, that Americans don't do well at the IFBB Worlds because we're honest and the rest of the world are cheats, just isn't believable.  Americans don't do well at the Worlds because our top athletes are more interested in getting a pro card.   Yes to compete at the worlds, you have to give lip service to the drug free requirements.  But our top athletes aren't even willing to do that.  Even though steroids are illegal in the US while legal in most of the rest of the world, our top athletes take massive amounts just for a chance at that pro card.   The top bodybuilders in many Asian countries have no real interest in turning pro because they already make more as an amateur, through government subsides, etc, than they could ever make as a pro.

That was very well said.....

I can tell you that in the past 4 years, I know that at least 10 of the class winners are totally natural.  I don't know all of them, but some of them, I won't mention names, but I do assure you that some of our athletes are in fact clean.  You can believe it or not...   Why would I protect someone else?

Stay well,

Carlo
