it makes sense from a business standpoint, they don't make any money off gamers that only rent or borrow

Yup - sounds like a big f u to Gamefly, but only if it actually turns out to be true. From Major Nelson's blog: http://majornelson.com/

Xbox One and Used Games

Quote
We know there is some confusion around used games on Xbox One and wanted to provide a bit of clarification on exactly what we’ve confirmed today. While there have been many potential scenarios discussed, today we have only confirmed that we designed Xbox One to enable our customers to trade in and resell games at retail.

Beyond that, we have not confirmed any specific scenarios.

Another piece of clarification around playing games at a friend’s house – should you choose to play your game at your friend’s house, there is no fee to play that game while you are signed in to your profile.

cool Cool

let's just kick back and remember the glorious xbox ONE reveal:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiBBqwwdpe8

My initial thoughts:

From a specs/media aspect it was pretty much as I thought.
Not thrilled with the look, but not hating either. Just wanted something more funky, but it looks like it's designed not to be hidden in a living room.
Glad the controller wasn't changed - I think it's the best I've used, but that's subjective.
I'm sure the games will look out of this world, so CoD will be gorgeous even though it will be the same multiplayer game I've played the 4 go rounds. I will still enjoy it though. MS getting the maps first is pretty big.
Now that I've thought about it, I don't think backwards compatibility is a big deal at all. I don't replay old games anyway, and if I do, they'll be an emulator and I keep my old consoles - N64, cube, PSone/2.
Hope there's no slim/streamlined version too near after launch.
A lot of the features I probably won't use, outside of it replacing a Cable Box in my house. I may eventually bag cable if this stuff gets more content.

How far can you hit a .44 COR softball? I have no idea what speed of pitching you're facing, but, as a point of reference, an 80mph pitch with a .44 COR softball will bounce off a wall at approx. 35 mph.

I'm not sure being a Doctor of Philosphy will help you with this situation.

I had shoulder surgery in Feb....all that stuff is par for the course.

this is the crux of the matter, and i do think it's fine. you can't go on dominating forever; sooner or later the competition is going to wise up and cut down on your marketshare and profits. this is what happened to sony with the PS3. a far cry, in my opinion, from systems that crashed and burned, had their shelf lives cut drastically short, barely had any developer support, ended up with the company pulling out of the market, etc.

Yup, that's the crux of our disagreement. I do agree the market can't be dominated every generation, and I do agree that the PS3 did survive and did not flame out while other have, and it did catch up in sales. And I did like the system.

We just disagree on how we define it vs expectations and impacts to Sony. All good.
10 Getbig Main Boards / Gossip & Opinions / Re: Anyone else anticipating the new XBOX reveal tomorrow? on: May 22, 2013, 06:02:51 PM
The "4.7B loss" included other products as well as PS3, for one thing, and for another, yes.

Quote
Sony’s Q2 financials today have taken total PlayStation division losses to $4.7 billion since PS3 launched in November 2006.

Roll Eyes

We've been over this before -- as if the competition was just going to lie there dormant forever.

We've been over it before, but it's still fact. No matter what the reason, they got crushed in market share. Going from 60% in first to 29% in third is a failure for Sony, and a success for MS and the Wii. If you get crushed by your competition, be it new or existing, it's a disaster.

oh brother an "independent analyst group" (do you think i was born yesterday? let's have a look at the 5 million other completely asinine predictions "independent analyst groups" have made regarding gaming trends) and kaz' ramblings (it's a japanese company, LOL @ expecting a shred of honest from public statements)
I grabbed a real industry analyst report. Small sample yes, but more tangible than you just making a statement.

look the wiiu is a disaster, the virtual boy is a disaster, the 3DO, jaguar, ngage, etc. were disasters.

you'd probably say the gamecube and n64 were disasters too Roll Eyes

Never disagreed with any of the addtional disasters you mention, never said anything abot the cube or n64. It's a PS3 numbers discussion. Could have been a good one too, if you didn't start with the roll eyes bullshit.

But, if you think a game system losing 50% of its market share to its competitors is "doing fine", go with that.

Great video. I always wondered how some of these closers can still be successful after losing a good amount of velocity but I suppose with that dynamic cutter action he can still be effective. He almost seems like a knuckleballer in the sense that he could stick around for a few more years because he doesn't necessarily need mid 90's velocity to be effective.

I think it's a fair statement.

This is not nearly the same for obvious reasons, but I've faced some pitchers in fast pitch softball who could hit their hip on the release, generating side spin that acted like a cutter. As a lefty, I can recall seeing pitches that looked fat when I swung, but hit right above my hands which produced a weak grounder to second. That's at 60mph. At 90+, I can't even imagine it.
12 Getbig Main Boards / Gossip & Opinions / Re: Anyone else anticipating the new XBOX reveal tomorrow? on: May 22, 2013, 05:26:22 PM
they don't even come CLOSE to showing that "the lifetime profit from PS3 is negative five billion dollars"

you say the PS3 isn't what sony was hoping for... when? when they were dreaming it up as PS2 passed the 100 million mark? no shit. as soon as the 360 took off, it was apparent, though, there wasn't going to be a domination. whether they let this show through their PR or not, there's no way they were naive behind closed doors. yeah, rough start, but in the end things didn't turn out bad.

It was infinitely closer than you just saying "things didn't turn out bad".

If they had a 4.7B loss (confirmed in link) through q2 of 2010, 4.5 years into it's lifecycle, you think they made a significant chunk back between the last two and a half years - not in 2012: http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2013/05/09/sony-posts-profits-for-the-year-but-not-because-of-playstation.aspx So, unless the had a 5B profit from the division in Q12013, they got crushed.

Things didn't turn out bad? They went from the leader at 60% market share for the PS2 to third place an 29.7% for the life of the PS3. http://www.vgchartz.com/article/250810/2013-year-on-year-sales-and-market-share-update-to-march-2nd/ That's a disaster.

As for expectations, here's Sony's president in 2006, with the XBox already being out a year:

Quote
KH: Well, the numbers change depending on how you slice and dice the data. What I'm saying is, given any metric they use to chart sales between 2006 and 2011, or calendar year to date of 2001, whatever you do, when we look back, I'd like to think that our market share will be as good--if not better--than what we've accomplished with the PS2 in the same kind of time frame since launch.

And here's an independent analyst group saying they'll take a dip with the new consoles but still win the market: http://www.gamespot.com/news/hirai-ps3-will-keep-or-surpass-ps2s-market-share-6156046

They were not expected to get absolutely lambasted like they did in market share. The Wii was completely underestimated, as was the 360. The company's a mess for many reasons, one being the PS3. The company recently laid of 10,000 people and sold their US headquarters for capital. Their stock has dropped from 40 to the teens since the 4.7B loss quoted above. They're in big trouble. I hope they rebound.

"subjective" to you because apparently you only played god of war 3 and uncharted and then traded it in, list the best exclusives for best consoles, sony has a much deeper rosterand the only people that argue it's subjective are people that haven't even played them, sony has more amazing exclusives coming in the last of us and beyond 2 souls

you say sony can't be trusted yet you trust a company that released broken consoles?

i have both consoles at this point and i'm far from a fan boy, you on the other hand only have one and you take shots at ps3 every chance you get

E

Played MGS4, GoW3, and Uncharted to start.....but it's subjective as stated. Thought they were great. As I did with many XBox titles as well. MGS is my favorite video game series ever.

I only take shots at the PS3 when points are made on non subjective items like profit margin, server reliability, market share, cross title games being ported, texture ram, etc....... I want the PS4 to be successful, because I'm going to buy one, and it means more fun for me. I don't want Sony to fail, but their company has been a mess the last few years, with a good sized decline in thier stock since then. The PS3 has contributed to that, and was definitely NOT what they were expecting when they launched it.
17 Getbig Misc Discussion Boards / Sports Discussion Boards / Re: MLB 2013 on: May 22, 2013, 08:11:33 AM
From what I have heard he's just as dominant as he's ever been. Pretty spectacular.

I watched every save this year. His control is still there, and the velocity is holding around 91, but I've seen it amped to 92-93. Even though it's not at 96 anymore, as long as the pitch is not flat, it's still going to be very difficult to hit.

This video is pretty cool at showing how he does it.

the same company with far better exclusive games and didn't red ring

sony "can't be trusted" to make a good gaming console yet they somehow built the best selling console ever in the ps2, and the ps3 has only sold 3 million less than the 360 despite coming out a year later and the initial launch price

you are a fan boy

E

Here you go again.

Far better exclusives = subjective. RRod = known and expected as explained to you on multiple occasions. Sold the same amount of units despite having the advantage of selling in 3 over 2, and owning the market on the previous generations, as explained to you again on many occasions.

Not a fanboy. I loved the PS2, owned a 3, and will get a 4, as explained to you on many occasions.

You're just going to believe what you want. For some reason, this stuff means a lot to you.
23 Getbig Main Boards / Gossip & Opinions / Re: Anyone else anticipating the new XBOX reveal tomorrow? on: May 21, 2013, 07:52:33 PM
can YOU? please show me where they lost 5 billion dollars, and i'll shut up.

Understand I've been through this discussion over the years, and have followed the industry via online sources like NPD, through a friend who works at Microsoft, and a couple of friends who are completely obsessed with this shit. Most of the data I quote is from memory, but a quick google shows this article.

http://www.vg247.com/2009/10/30/sony-ps-division-has-lost-4-7-billion-since-launching-ps3/

Now, granted, that's from 2010 but there's been tons more like it. If you've followed Sony's investor relations reporting, they have continued to struggle since.

EDIT: Found this article from Kotaku in 2013: http://kotaku.com/5973498/weapons-of-mass-disruption-3-how-and-why-consoles-will-die

Quote
According to Cousins’ report on Kotaku, Microsoft has spent some $2.996bn on Xbox 360 since it launched in 2005, while Sony has fared worse, spending $4.951 billion on PS3. Both figures are a loss, and you can see an overview of both company’s losses in Cousins’s financial table here.

Even if you feel like data mining and the numbers turn out to be different, I wouldn't change my position. Being a leader in Market share and then getting blasted by two separate companies in that context is a disaster.

The losses between the two can't be viewed without context. This guys sums it up best about Microsoft's losses relative to Sony's. It's an old article from 1UP that says Sony could lose more on the PS3 than they made on the PS2.

Quote
He (and DFC) predict Sony will extend this generation even longer than the PS2's because of this (making Sony's claims of 10-year life cycle a real possibility). Of course, the Xbox 360, especially considering its $1 billion in replacement costs for faulty hardware, has likely cost Microsoft just as much, if not more. But Microsoft's entire foray into the videogame business has been a costly multi-billion dollar investment (Microsoft lost $4 billion on its original Xbox alone), whereas Sony's games division has only recently been forced to spend so heavily to hold on to its status in the games market (and to force the adoption of an HD media standard).

microsoft got the drop on sony with a 1 year head start, so much for "embedded user base"... and where did they end up? sony is looking, by all accounts, in a pretty good position at the end of the generation, neck and neck with microsoft, and poised to pull ahead. i don't consider that a failure.

Microsoft got the drop BECAUSE of the embedded user base, and the strategy worked brilliantly. How are they poised to pull ahead? Based on their press conferences?

and what does the NPD data say about the wii software sales? that they're shitty, right? the wiiu is going to flop, because nintendo lucked out with their batshit insane "wii" concept, which gave them the confidence to go ahead with an even more batshit insane "wiiu" concept.

No sense in arguing the Wii, since we generally agree. But, to your own point, if a console had shitty software sales, why would it give Nintendo the "confidence" to go with even shittier Wii U?
24 Getbig Main Boards / Gossip & Opinions / Re: Anyone else anticipating the new XBOX reveal tomorrow? on: May 21, 2013, 06:59:23 PM
Positive impact? maybe not , bad? No.

It's really bad.

Microsoft payed out over $1 billion dollars to fix the problems with the RROD , I don't think that's beating Sony on any level and that made Microsoft look really bad , at first they denied responsibility for failures then it got to a point of 33% of Xbox's were failing and they had to address that issue , the original failures with the Xbox was due to rush to production to beat the PS3

This was all by design to grab market share from Sony, and it worked beautifully. They knew the consoles would RRoD. It obviously had minimal impact when you look at the final numbers.

We'll have to see what Microsoft does in terms of gaming with the new system , so far the PS4 seems more interesting.

All subjective and personal preference. I wasn't overwhelmed by MS's presser today, but a ton more data will be available over the next few months.
25 Getbig Main Boards / Gossip & Opinions / Re: Anyone else anticipating the new XBOX reveal tomorrow? on: May 21, 2013, 06:52:47 PM
because the PS3 didn't perform like the PS2, it was a failure Roll Eyes

Who said that's the reason?

It's a failure because Sony lost 5 billion dollars on the console, and a shit ton of market share to Microsoft, despite Microsoft only selling in 2 markets vs. Sony's 3 and Sony having a ridiculously high embedded user base. That's a failure.

microsoft stepped up and provided serious competition... sony did fine; expecting a repeat performance of the PS2 is just silly. with the PS1 and PS2 sony took advantage of their competitors' oversights (catering to developers and optical disks), with the xbox360 microsoft did a bit of the same (by offering great online services and catering to developers). neither in terms of profits or product quality can the PS3 be viewed as some sort of catastrophic failure -- only due to its loss of marketshare, which was pretty much inevitable unless microsoft and nintendo decided to roll over and play dead.

Can you provide the profits over the life cycle of the PS3 to support your claim that sony did "fine".

and you say nintendo beat them? the wii may have outsold the ps3 and xbox, but somehow i doubt the profits were hugely higher. without looking at any figures, i'm almost sure the software sales were abysmal. nintendo lost the "traditional gamer" market, and even lost the so-called "casual market" of which they were so proud (hello smart phones). the wiiu is shaping up to be an unbelievable disaster... how that piece of shit could EVER make it to production is absolutely mind-boggling. talk about a complete loss of touch with reality. they might have made a lot of money last generation, but in doing so they wound up in a horrible position.

Why are you "sure" that Wii software sales were abysmal and doubt that profits were high for the Wii? In other words, you're taking your guesses as fact, when they're not correct. I've followed the console wars for most of the life cycles of these consoles. I didn't guess at anything, I followed NPD data to see sales (not shipped), market share etc.....

Yeah, the Wii was a shitty console and a gimmick, but it was a wildly successful shitty gimmick. The Wii U IS going to flop, but it's not because of the Wii.
