Getbig Womens Area / Figure, Bikini and Fitness Discussions / Re: Extreme Bootcamp Is BACK!!!!

David always did a good job of "kicking my butt" whenever I trained with him. Only problem was I couldn't get in to train with him often enough!! So I'm happy to see that he's brought back his Bootcamp classes. I've always wanted to experience for myself what he can do with this format.
And it's kind of good to know that he was the first (or at least one of the first with media coverage...since there are always people out there who want to claim they did something first). It reassures you that a trainer doesn't always just do what everyone else is doing...it shows he has the ability to "think outside the box" (yeah, I hate using hackneyed phrases, too. But when it fits, it fits!).
Looking forward to joining you at your bootcamp class...once I can find the time to get over there. Just keep me posted on the dates!

Getbig Misc Too Board / 2009 IFBB Contests Info & Threads / Anyone need a room for the Arnold? Near convention center.
|
on: February 22, 2008, 01:15:32 PM
|
I have a reservation for a 2 double-bed non-smoking room at the Marriott Courtyard Columbus Downtown that I won't be needing after all. (I'll be staying somewhere else.) It's the Arnold's group rate of $159 per night. The reservation is currently for check-in 2/27 and check-out 3/2. But if you need fewer nights, that can be changed. Let me know by Monday, February 25th, if you'd like me to transfer the reservation over to you. Otherwise, I'll just cancel the reservation. -Venus ----------------- www.DrVenus.com

Getbig Womens Area / Figure, Bikini and Fitness Discussions / Do you need Hair/Makeup Services at NPC Nationals?
|
on: October 12, 2007, 07:15:28 PM
|
I have the most AMAZING hair/makeup artist, Liza Macawili, who I've used for my fitness/figure competitions for the past 6 years. She will be in Dallas for the NPC Nationals, November 16-17th, and is offering her services to those who are interested. She truly does a FANTASTIC job. I've repeatedly had judges mention to me that my hair & makeup was the best of everyone on stage whenever she works on me. So I HIGHLY recommend her!! And it's so worth it, not having to worry about that aspect of my stage presentation...especiall y when I have other things to worry about -- like my fitness routine, my costume, my tan, etc. She has limited spots available for new clients, so contact her SOON if you are interested! Liza Macawili www.LizaMakeup.comEmail: LizaMacawili@yahoo.comHope you take advantage of her services. She's definitely a difference-maker! -Venus www.DrVenus.com

An issue I had was that they focused on weight lost not body composition. That one school teacher packed on some muscle which cost him a shot at winning. I think it fed into a womans obsession with the scale when exercising and their fear of "getting big".
I absolutely agree! Marty (the school teacher) looked great, displaying a lean and muscular physique! Such a shame that a guy who puts on less muscle during his fat loss is rewarded over a guy who puts together a better body composition package. Definitely a poor message to send out to the general public. It's not all about the number on the scale! -Venus www.DrVenus.com

Not a bad pic, David -- for a first-timer! But I still give the edge to your wife in the modeling department, wink wink! I wish Alexis well with her new career goal! She will be a welcome member to the field of rehabilitation, and I'm sure she'll love it just as much as I do! Alexis' hard work and determination is certainly apparent physically. Inspiring! Now that same fortitude will serve her well as she takes on a new academic challenge. As for me, time to get back to physically challenging myself again. I'll need your talents as a trainer, David. See ya in the gym soon! -Venus www.DrVenus.com

That aside, considering how expensive it is to participate in these sports, what percentage of women do it for the love of competition and what percentage do it because they think they can build a career (that brings them money and fame)? If it is for the love of competition, what is the average longevity of their passion?
I'd definitely put myself in the category of competing in fitness for the love of competition. I truly find it a lot of fun. I enjoy many aspects of it...the workouts, learning new choreography, the creativity of designing a routine (theme, music, costumes, props), the backstage energy and excitement, being goal-directed, meeting new people, the challenge of performing a new skill...these all make it very fulfilling to me. I've been competing for 10 years now, and I don't see quitting anytime in the near future. -Venus www.DrVenus.com

Getbig Womens Area / Figure, Bikini and Fitness Discussions / Re: Jenny Lynn's Scandal.....
|

Well after reading http://www.bodysport.com/Archives/mar06/breakingnews/jennylynnsworstnightmare.html I'm more convinced than ever that Jennys "flu" was more a result of diuretic use gone bad. I personally know what can happen when things go bad with diuretics, and things go bad REAL QUICK and nothing you can do can prevent the symptoms of severe dehydration once it sets in - only a trip to the hospital to get hooked up to an iv to replace the fluids can fix it. Everything that she went through and her rapid deterioration is not a result of any flu I've ever heard of. Sure the flu can knock you on your ass, by severe dehydration is 10 times worse. Its too have gone through all that prep and then to have your body do a 180 on you when it she was so close to another win. I feel sorry for her, but I think the "flu story" is just an attempt from her to save face and not look bad to all her fans, etc.... especially considering the diuretics aren't supposed to used in the first place Can you imagine the negative publicity it would give Jenny, the federation and the show if the truth got out? That one of its top athletes were using a banned substance that required her to be hospitalised? Before everyone starts jumping down my throat, BUT I'm just saying what it looks like to me because I've been there / done that and know from personal experience what happens when it (dehydration) sets in. JMO I don't have any "inside information" about the incident, but based on reading the story on Bodysport, it sounds quite plausible to me for Jenny to have suffered a case of the "stomach flu". She may have had a contaminated food or beverage the prior evening. When people say "stomach flu", they are generally referring to the diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting that occurs when you have gastroenteritis. And you can indeed rapidly deteriorate due to dehydration occurring with gastroenteritis. "Stomach flu" is not the flu which is caused by the influenza virus. (Influenza can cause the respiratory illness commonly associated with cold-like symptoms...fever, cough, runny nose, muscle aches, etc.) A viral gastroenteritis can come and go within 1-10 days, while an influenza flu syndrome may last 1-2 weeks. -Venus www.DrVenus.com

I hope I am not the only one that noticed Soumaya Wilmore got screwed majorly. she was tall class, and also had a small waist, Good conditioning, and nice balance. I hope someone else was at the show. Tamie is a friend as well, and deserved to place second or first. Soumaya should have been at least first or second depending upon your preference. Avis, although she won, can look much better. I think Avis was softer than the other girls. However, I expect Avis to keep improving each show.
Agreed! Soumaya looked amazing. That tiny waist!!! Awesome job, Soumaya! -Venus www.DrVenus.com

Getbig Womens Area / Figure, Bikini and Fitness Discussions / Re: Why did you become a fitness/figure competitor?
|
on: February 20, 2006, 07:31:45 PM
|
I entered my first fitness competition after seeing one on TV while sitting at a sports bar in South Beach. A friend who was with me suggested I give it a try...perhaps jokingly at the time...but being somewhat of an adventurous type who likes to try out new things, I said "Why Not?". So I looked up more information about competing on the internet and the very next year, I was on stage in my first fitness contest. That was 10 years ago. Why do I continue to do it? Being a rehab physician, I have made it my career to promote a healthy and fit lifestyle. I've discovered that my outside interests...including fitness and figure competition...only enhance my ability to motivate others, whether they be patients, friends, co-workers, fellow competitors, or my community at large. And honestly, I simply have a lot of fun competing! -Venus www.DrVenus.com
