LMFAO. Talk about thread backfire.

A Marine's response to the Presidential umbrella umbrage

I thought the reaction to this photo was interesting:

Yes, the President of the United States of America had a boot Corporal hold an umbrella for him while he gave a speech.

The reactions were interesting because people let their political butthurtedness flow into their opinions on the matter. People seem to forget that we’re Marines, and this is exactly the kind of shit that Marines do. Somehow, holding an umbrella for the President and the Turkish Prime Minister is seen as demeaning, while all of the other bullshit that Marines do every day is not. I find it entertaining to see Marines on my Facebook page saying things like, “I would have told him to fuck off and hold his own umbrella.”

No you wouldn’t.

Shut up.

We’re Marines, if the President of the fucking United States asks you to hold a fucking umbrella, you hold a fucking umbrella. As well, the day I give a shit about a boot Corporal holding an umbrella is the day I’ve forgotten what the Marine Corps is. Honestly, holding an umbrella for the President is probably the least demeaning thing I could imagine doing as a Marine, as opposed to the other bullshit I had to do every day. No one would think twice about asking a boot to police call cigarette butts across the entire base at 5am, but the minute this boot has to hold an umbrella for the Commander in Chief, people get upset.

He’s the President, he rates an umbrella.

17 Getbig Main Boards / Politics and Political Issues Board / Republicans Informed of IRS Investigation Last Year on: Today at 06:57:01 AM
Much has been made of the fact that senior Treasury Department officials were told about the investigation into the treatment of tea party groups in June 2012 — months before last year’s the Presidential election. Republicans who requested the investigation were also told about it at approximately the same time.

In a letter dated July 11, 2012, the man who conducted the investigation — IRS inspector general J. Russell George — wrote to Rep. Darrell Issa, the chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, telling him that he was investigating the issue and offering to keep him updated as the investigation progressed.

“The Oversight Committee knew about the audit because it requested it,” an Issa aide told ABC News. Issa released the letter, along with his own letter dated June 28, 2012 requesting the investigation, last week.

“We would be happy to provide a status update to the Subcommittee staff and provide a copy of our interim and final reports on the matter when they are issued,” George wrote in the letter to Issa. An identical letter was also sent the Rep. Jim Jordan, who, like Issa had raised the issue with the IRS.

The letter notes that it was Issa who had written him about “questionnaires that the IRS has issued which may exceed appropriate scrutiny and a potential lack of balance in the use of criteria for reviewing organizations that are applying for tax-exempt status.” George offers no confusions but says, “our Office of Audit recently began work on this issue.”

According the Issa aide, the committee received an email update from George in December saying, “We are leaving no stone unturned as part of our due diligence. As such, we won’t be able to provide a detailed, substantive briefing until late April/early May.”

On Friday, in his testimony before the House Ways & Means Committee, George said he had notified top Treasury officials — including Deputy Secretary Neal Wolin — about his investigation in June 2012, part of a routine briefing on the issues he was looking into.

Republicans pounced on that revelation as evidence top Administration officials knew about the targeting of conservative groups well before the 2012 election. It is now clear that at least some key Republicans knew about the investigation as well.

While George informed Treasury officials about the fact he was conducting the investigation in 2012, the Treasury Department says he did not go into detail about his investigation or tell them about his conclusion that IRS had improperly targeted conservative groups. Similarly, the letter to Issa says the investigation had begun but does not say that it had uncovered any wrongdoing.

Not sure "a backlash" is accurate. 90% of the public don't care either way. We honestly can't trust either party to investigate either party so we can never tell when we're hearing the truth, and just assume if it is negative about democrats and coming from republicans, it's just politics and visa versa.

21 Getbig Main Boards / Politics and Political Issues Board / Canada earthquake shakes parts of N.Y., Vermont on: May 18, 2013, 07:04:56 AM
ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- A 5.1-magnitude earthquake in Ontario, Canada, was felt early Friday from upstate New York to the Vermont border.

Canada's government agency that monitors earthquakes says the quake occurred at 9:43 a.m. Friday about 13 miles northeast of Shawville, Quebec.

Media outlets in northern New York say people in communities along the St. Lawrence River and as far east as Lake Champlain on New York-Vermont border reported feeling their homes shake.

The United States Geological Survey put the reading lower, at 4.4. That reading was backed up by a different U.S. site, the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University in New York City. It is normal for it to take a while to determine a scientific consensus on the magnitude of an earthquake.

No injuries have been reported as a result of the tremor.

The epicenter was not far from the locus of a similarly sized earthquake felt in Rochester in June 2010.

The city's 911 dispatch center received a small handful of calls in the half hour after the earthquake.

"The State Office of Emergency Management continues to monitor effects of the earthquake that occurred this morning near Ottawa, Canada, and was felt throughout parts of New York State," read a statement from Gov. Andrew Cuomo's office. "At this time, there have been no reports of damage to any of the state's critical infrastructure."

Local residents reacted to the trembling on Twitter and other social networks.

<!--iframe-->

"I was sitting having my coffee about five minutes ago and the kitchen table started shaking," Louis Grande of Penfield, N.Y., said about 9:50 a.m.

Mike Giambrone, 48, was in his office in Perinton when he felt shaking.

"I was shaking and I looked at my desk and it was shaking," said Giambrone, who had never experienced an earthquake before. "It was weird. There was no hysteria. People were just like 'I think that was an earthquake.'"

Judy Dickinson of Irondequoit posted on Facebook that "my whole house shook, sounded like my roof was flying off and rolled me in my office chair!"

The area of western Quebec where Friday's quake was centered is well-known to earthquake experts.

"It's an area of persistent seismicity," Cindy Ebinger, professor of earth and environmental sciences at the University of Rochester. She said there had been foreshocks over the past week — smaller temblors that foreshadowed Friday's larger event.

Another quake of magnitude 5.0 occurred about 50 east of Shawville on June 23, 2010. That event was felt in western New York as well.

John Ebel, director of the Weston Observatory at Boston College, said the same seismic area was home to a magnitude 6.2 quake in 1935. That one caused the collapse of a railroad embankment and some structural damage.

Ebel said he wouldn't expect anything of that nature from Friday's event. "A magnitude 5 is right at the threshold at which damage starts. There could be chimney damage, cracked plaster, things being knocked off shelves. I would not expect anything major like building collapses."

Earthquakes generally result from movement at the intersection of two masses of rock deep underground.

The scenario most familiar to lay people is movement where two vast continental plates come together, as is the case at the famous San Andreas fault in California.

But according to information posted Friday morning on the website of the U.S. Geological Survey, the Western Quebec seismic zone is different. There are no plate boundaries there. Instead, the "seismic zone is laced with known faults, but numerous smaller or deeply buried faults remain undetected. Even the known faults are poorly located at earthquake depths.

"Accordingly, few, if any, earthquakes in the seismic zone can be linked to named faults. It is difficult to determine if a known fault is still active and could slip and cause an earthquake. As in most other areas east of the Rockies, the best guide to earthquake hazards in the Western Quebec seismic zone is the earthquakes themselves," the USGS post said.

In Burlington, Vt., the geologic shudder stirred social media from its otherwise routine Friday morning traffic.

Benghazi Backfires on Republicans as Democrats Eviscerate Issa and the GOP

The GOP’s Benghazi house of cards has collapsed, and now Democrats are eviscerating Darrell Issa and his fellow Republicans for overreaching and politicizing a tragedy.

Rep. Elijah E. Cummings the Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform blasted Rep. Darrell Issa for going back on his word to hold a public hearing with the Accountability Review Board that examined the security situation in Benghazi.

Cummings said, ... -snip-

-snip-

As the ranking member on the committee, Rep. Cummings is leading the Democratic pushback against Rep. Issa, Sen. Lindsey Graham, and other Republicans who have politicized Benghazi. There is no cover-up, but Republicans keep moving the goalposts in their never ending quest to find the scandal that never was.

A backlash is growing against these relentless Republican attempts to drum up an Obama scandal. While Darrell Issa chases conspiracy theories while the walls are crumbling around the Republican Party. Republicans have politicized a tragedy to the point where it has become an insult to the victims, and for that there will be a price to pay.

23 Getbig Main Boards / Politics and Political Issues Board / Conservative Advice To GOP: Don't Legislate, Focus On Scandals on: May 18, 2013, 06:17:51 AM
Source: NPR

Heritage Action, the political activist offshoot of the conservative Heritage Foundation, has some advice for House Speaker John Boehner and Majority Leader Eric Cantor: focus on the scandals plaguing the Obama administration and stay away from legislation that could "highlight major schisms" within the House Republican Conference.

In a letter this week to the leaders, Heritage Action CEO Michael Needham says "outrage over Benghazi" and the IRS targeting of Tea Party groups has "rightly focused the nation's attention squarely on the actions of the Obama administration." The letter goes on to say the House must continue holding oversight hearings, "but it would be imprudent to do anything that shifts the focus from the Obama administration to the ideological differences within the House Republican Conference."

The letter specifically mentions the Internet sales tax bill (which recently passed the Senate with lots of Republican support) and the farm bill (the Senate is working through it now and is likely to pass it soon). Needham says both bills, which House conservatives dislike, could prompt the press to write another " 'circular firing squad' article."

"Rather than scheduling such legislation for consideration, we urge you to keep the attention focused squarely on the Obama administration," Needham wrote in summation.
