This is how i bring up my flexibility.  Put each one of your legs on a dinning room chair, while watching tv or whatever. (so it's like your doing the splits) i usually watch 30 minutes of tv while doing this.... it loosens the muscles and adds flexibility.... withing a week youll be doing the splits............

That picture is pretty much the same principle as the way im saying to do it just not as painful...... and since you have the top of the chair to hold onto for support its not as horrible looking....

Sometimes I attach my shins to the sofa with my karate belts and try to bring it tighter and tigher so I can have better flexibility. I do that for about 20-30 minutes then my legs go numb and I have to shake them to bring them back to normal position. I still can't do the split. I guess I have to do it more than once a month.

Hey scitysmallguy do you face the chairs or what?
just push some weight!

Check out Pavel Tsatsouline's Relax Into Stretching book.  Great flexibility routines...

Not saying that someone should do this, but you can usually download it off Limewire ;D

Alexxx yeah you put the seat of the chairs so that your feet are in them and the backs are away like they are on opposite sides of a dinner table, but your the dinner table inbetween them

You see how flexible sumo wrestlers are.  Everyone of them can do the splits.  From what I heard over here is during their first few days at the school (i don't know the name) new students are actually stretched in a manner that rips their muscles as to elongate them.  Ultra painful but a necessity.  Not sure but it how I heard they did it.

if you want to build the ability to do splits, use a wall (or better yet 2 walls meeting at a corner) to gradually force yourself deeper into the stretch. be sure you do alot of groin stretches(where you sit in the lotus position and try to make your knees touch the ground) and hamstring stretches
