what is the purpose of Maltodextrin
« on: November 08, 2006, 01:18:01 PM »
I know what the purpose of dextrose is, but I keep hearing people talk about Maltodextrin too.  What is it for?

Same purpose.  It's considered a complex carb, whereas dextrose is simple, but the chain is so weak that the GI is pretty much the same.  Dextrose is sickenly sweet and malto is tasteless, so when blended into a shake I prefer a blend or just the malto.

I hope this helps you . . . .

“Dextrose is labeled a simple carbohydrate and Maltodextrin complex. And now this should make perfect sense. But don’t be fooled by the word, “complex.” The bonds that compose maltodextrin are very weak, and readily broken apart in your stomach; moreover, the chain is extremely minimal in composition. The weak bonds, and fragile composition of maltodextrin cause it to be digested a fraction slower than dextrose.”

See "Dextrose & Maltodextrin an in-depth analysis"http://www.abcbodybuilding.com/magazine03/dextrose.htm

Either is fine.  However, the ideal is to use both for a more prolonged insulin spike (see discussion above re: slightly different rates of absorption).  When I'm not in a cutting phase, I use four tablespoons of dextrose and two tablespoons of maltodextrin, which supplies 72g of simple carbs.

It's pretty much the same as the weight, so a weight of about 5grams = 5 grams of carb ~~

My dextrose is 4grams per 1 and a quarter teaspoon....so about 60 grams of dextrose for me is about 1/2 a cup...and if you need help doing conversions just type in a search for a conversion from teaspoons to cups on yahoo or something.

Ahh...I read the nutritional label wrong.

1.25 teaspoons is 4g, I mistakingly read it as 1.25 tablespoons is 4g.

So, 50/4 = 12.5. 12.5 x 1.25 = 15.6 teaspoon = 50g

3 teaspoon = 1 tablespoon. 5.20 tablespoon = 50g

16 tablespoon = 1 cup

Therefore, 50g = 1/3 cup dextrose

They also list 1 serving as having 15 calories. So 1/3cup ~ 187.5 calories. However, going by 1g carb = 4 cal, 50g carb = 200 calories  ???

Math makes my head hurt  :P

It's pretty close to a 1:1 ratio - weight to carb ~ give or take.  I think, if we're being precise, it's 100 grams weight = 94 grams carb.  It's such a fine powder that unless you're weighing it with a digital scale, you're not gonna get it exact... which in the whole scheme of things, isn't going to make that much of a difference.

somewhere on another thread someone suggested buying dextrose at a home brewery/winemaking store. 1 kg was $9.99 online (ouch) but i called a local winemaker and he sells it in 2.5kg bags for $6.00

thanks to whoever it was for that suggestion  :)
