Author Topic: Arnold - did he take steroids after leaving bodybuilding? (Read 9372 times)

I was watching "Red Heat" the other night and made me think that Schwarzenegger held on to quite a bit of muscle after he left bodybuilding. (See pic below.) Made me wonder two things:

1. Did Arnold continue taking steroids into the 80s?
2. If not, can one sustain most of the muscles grown through steroids, by just continuing heavy lifting and keeping up one's nutrition or do they atrophy quickly after stopping steroids?

Arnold was still taking steroids in the mid 80's - look at the shape he had to get into for Predator etc.

lol he claimed to stop taking them in 1990 but i'd say he stopped for a while after T2. Obvioulsy he started taking them again for T3

I don't know if he took them continuously, but if he did take layoffs, he did a cycle to regain mass before each of his movies at the very least.

Wishful thinking.

Stop taking steroids, the steroid gains go away. Look at any retired pro about a year after they retire.

Can one still maintain a decent muscular physique if they continue working out and eating properly? Sure, but they won't look like a pro bodybuilder.

this is what Arnold looked like in the late 1970s, after he won his first six Olympias, before his comeback in 1980. He couldn't remain muscular without steroids when he was 30. Why do you think he would be able to in his 40s and 50s? (for a time reference, note the t-shirt. Gold opened World Gym in 1977. Arnold was born in 1947.)

Oh yes, Arnold kept taking them alright. Look at the barroom scene at the start of T2, he looked incredible. Not even someone as genetically gifted as Arnold could look like that without them, especially in their mid 40's. How he looked in T3 could have been done with CG, they can do some amazing things nowdays like make Arnold have big legs or make him look bigger than Sergio

After Arnold retired in 1975, he did a lot of guest posing in 1976 but his bodyweight was only about 215 so I think he was clean then. From 1977-79, he got very lean and was doing a lot of long-distance running. I think he might have even run in a marathon during that time. He was obviously much thinner during this time. In 1980, he did the TV movie, The Jayne Mansfield Story, but he was still really lean. Shortly after he made that movie, he trained for 8 weeks to get in shape for the '80 Olympia and he went back on the drugs for the contest. I think he used them for both Conan movies, Terminator, Commando, Raw Deal, Predator, Running Man, Red Heat, Twins and T2. Starting with Kindergarten Cop, he started looking much less muscular and this was also the time he was elected as the head of the President's Council on Physical Fitness. I think he probably stopped using them around this time. This was also the year that Wendy Leigh released her book, Arnold, An Unauthorized Biography, and she talked alot about his steroid use so that would be another good reason to stop them.

that is not the point...Arnold is a ego maniac...And if he is going to be in a movie with his shirt off, why in the world would a guy who has used steroids all his lifting career not use them now for T2...

Arnold probably has no idea what it is like to train all out naturally...He has always been aided...The same goes for Sly stallon...You think he decided to make Rocky 6 without been aided? Not a chance in the world...These guys have stock in Hormone Replacement clinics and are also clients...

he still takes growth hormone, and steroids to this day, he may be off shit right now, but he takes it to this day, once a roid user always a roid user.
