Over 200 Arrested on Tiananmen Square on New Year's Day
« on: January 03, 2007, 06:53:46 PM »
On the morning of January 1, 2007, Chinese authorities arrested over 200 protesters on Tiananmen Square. Tiananmen public security, armed police and plainclothes officers were on the scene to interrogate and arrest demonstrators.

Voicing a variety of complaints, the majority of these protesters came from all across China. Demonstrators were arrested in several groups near the exit of an underground tunnel leading to the Square. Police hauled off five vehicles full of protesters.

Thanks Berserker,
The Chinese oppression of human rights is terrible. I can't believe that the world continues to sit back as they strip rights from, Hong Kong, Tibet, and their own citizens.

you're welcome, and we just keep on rewardeing them.  American companies are willing to bow to their censorship wishes so they can operate in China.  China has no insentive to clean up.  Hmmmmmm... maybe the olympic committee should reconsider.  They don't look ready to hold the games.... ;D

Until China is forced to clean up its human rights record, no other nation will.

The question I ask is this- as the younger, wealthier, better educated generations start to lead China in the years ahead will we see the country really reform into a democratic, free nation? A Chinese friend who is my age- 45, moved here in 1982. He said when he was in school you were taught America was the enemy. He says kids are no longer taught that. Maybe I am an optimist but that made me happy.

I have said for years that democracy will eventually come to China.  It's just a matter of time.

IT'S Not going to happen because you dream upon a star ::)  If there is no insentive to do so, it won't happen... It's not going to happen with American Companies working around Communist China's needs.  Right now China is a decade into an experiment where they participate in capitalism without losing control over the people to democracy.  So far that's working perfectly for them.  As long as the Company makes money, they don't give two #$%@ what gov system they're doing it under or with.  You may have said it for years but what the hell is that based on?

Communism is a failure.  The former Soviet Union proved this.  As people become more educated and democracy spreads, communism fails.  It will eventually crumble in China, just like it did in the former Soviet Union.  Educated Chinese and those wanting religious freedom, among others, will probably help topple that failed system.  I don't know precisely how it will happen, but I believe it will eventually.

China is now limiting the amount of foreign cars that can be sold in China, because GM, and Audi have huge market shares. Buick is the #1 selling luxury brand in China. It has been said that after the Chinese get some of the tech from collaborations with foreign car maunfacturers (GM, AUDI, Mercedes), they will kick them out.  And of course China does not recognize "intellectual property rights", this is shown in their knock off of Merceds Benzes, BMWs, Hondas ( a fuqing shame). Knocking off a D&C bag is one thing, but knocking off a C-class Mercedes is another.

Had Soviet communism had the backing of Corporate America, it would be alive and well today... Don't forget to put that into your computation.

I doubt that.  It has been many moons since my Russian history class, but from what I recall glasnost was a primary factor in the fall of communism in the Soviet Union.  I doubt "corporate America" could have prevented glasnost.

Aren't the Chines part of the "big 8" in the WTC? If so they are bound by agreements and have to work to enforce IPR and can't just kick out companies. We also have leverage to put pressure on them.

The don't observe such agreements. Chinese car companies have been taken to court by BMW, Honda, Mercedes, and the foreign car comanies have lost. I mean when you blantantly make a half Mercedes, half BMW...that takes away from the companies rep who actually makes those cars.

Honda has the CR-V, but a chines car company made an exact copy and called it the RV-C, without the Honda reliablity.
