How long til Shogun is number 1?
« on: January 13, 2007, 03:25:26 PM »
face it, the guy is almost flawless. Within the next 2-3 years i think he can go on to reach the top of his weight class, i just watched him mauling Hiromitsu Kanehara and the guy is a fucking monster! His kicks, stomps and opponent control are inspiring to watch, that is how you beat someone down. One thing you see about his fight record is that he is prompt in finishing his opponents off, you can count the times hes gone passed round one on a single hand

thoughts?

Probably my favorite fighter. He'll be #1 when he gets a fight against Liddell I suppose, because the chances of him ever fighting Wandy are slim to none. I'd like to see an Arona rematch, too.

i give it 2-3 years cos his chances of ever fighting Silva are virtually zero and Chuck will be (hopefully) in a graceful retirement by then. If he fought Chuck in a Pride ring then there is a very strong chance he would kick the mohawk right off Chucks noggin, i think Chuck would have a great chance to KO him in a UFC fight. Its finding the middle ground, that would be an exceptional match

Yes. Personally, I think the Pride rules are the best for fighting around with the amount of freedom they give, and with Shogun and his stomps. I agree with Chuck probably getting a KO in the cage, though. The kid is a beast, with one cool nickname to boot.  :o

his style excites me, hes not your traditional GnP guy who waits to mount and look for the odd elbow. He will downright jump on your head til youre not moving! I like it! Yes the freedom that Pride rules give the fighters can be "dangerous" but its nothing that the UFC didnt do when they first came about. Plus it makes for a much better fight from a fans point of view. In UFC you can basically predict how a fight is going to go about as if it has been reheearsed over and over. In Pride you just sit back in awe of the guys really showcasing their talents

Exactly. The freedom they get is what makes it exciting. After watching Pride, UFC just isn't as exciting on the ground when a guy's knee is  perfectly lined up with a guys face to do some damage and nothing can be done of it. Just waters down the skill level needed to succeed in it.

his fight against Santos was a good fight for the amount of time it lasted. I thought he was gonna be KO'd within the first minute, before he finally ties him up on the ropes. You see his phenomenal ability on the ground by the way he easily escapes the guard and manages to mount him! Excellent fight

Yeah, I really enjoyed that fight. Cyborg isn't someone to be taken lightly, either. Just goes to show how skilled the guy really is.

Cyborg IMO is a better striker, and i believe that fight was early in Shoguns career which makes it all the more impressive

That fight really doesen't say much on how good he truly is on the ground since Cyborgs ground game is garbage.  Shogun's fight against Babalu was a bad ass, see-saw battle with all kinds of sweeps, reversals, and sub attempts.   That was a bad ass ground war (even though he lost).  It was a shame Shougun could'nt have done more on his feet in that fight since he had a leg injury.

do you think he would brush him aside now if they had a rematch? A fully fit Shogun IMO would wipe his arse with Babalu and flush him down the toilet. Babalu is a decent fighter and has some credible results to his name, but i really dont think hes a match for Shogun in any department

I'm almost certain Shogun would win in a rematch.  I would say they are about even on the ground, Babalu is a better wrestler, and Shogun has the better stand-up.  Babalu's only chance now would be to take him down and control him for three rounds, but, Shogun's good enough on the ground to prevent that from happening.  I think Shogun would eventually get the KO.
