Bas Rutten: He has a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Stephen Quadros: Yes, well many of the fighters have a black belt.

Bas Rutten: Yes, but in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu you cant buy your belt like in say, Tae Kwon Do.

Stephen Quadros: Do you have any belts?

Bas Rutten: I have a brown belt in Tae Kwon Do.

From 40+ years of experience as a martial-artist, the ONLY thing a black belt is good for is to "hold up your pants"!!!

Truer words were never spoken by the great Bruce Lee!!

Achieving a first-degree-black-belt/Shodan rank (gee, I've gotten several) is like getting an undergraduate college degree...it depends on where you got it and what you can do with it after you get it THAT REALLY COUNTS!!!

Over the years of my MA training, I've seen unbelievable variability (!) in the standards for awarding an MA student a first-degree black belt in the hard arts...e.g. in one school, you had to train only 4 hours a week for 2 years and pass their exams...in another, a minimum of 1000 hrs. of training, plus pass their exams...and, if I recall correctly, the great Joe Lewis would award you one if you could last 3 rounds with him in the kickboxing ring, etc.

And, I've seen/heard-of several "black belts" who got their butt kicked in a REAL (street) fight...myself included!

However, the REAL MEN that compete in the professional kickboxing/MMA arena...Pride, UFC, K-1, King of the Cage, Muay Thai, etc...are TRUE WARRIORS and I SALUTE ALL of them...regardless of their ever being awarded a "black belt"!!!

That's why all these top fighters spent up to 6 years of training earning black belts in Karate.  ::)

to get your Shodan in my class you have to train for a minimum 5 years, Kawasoe Sensei doesnt like it if you try after 3-4 years as he believes that no matter how good you are - youre not ready. He is old school, a real Shotokan hardcore who dedicated his whole life to it. Enoeda was along the same lines and Frank Brennan just scared the shit out of me ha ha

And then they figure out like i did, that it's fuckin useless in a real fight! and start taking other things!
Anyones who's been in a honest to goodness street fight, knows karate is not the way to go unless heavily modified. Basically you'd have to change it so much it wouldn't be karate anymore lol
Also I droped a 4th degree black belt with one hammer punch to the solar plex why ??? they hve no good hand defense lol maybe it worked 2000 years ago but it dont hold weight now! the quicker you figure that out the faster you will learn to fight for real ;)

Walk into a full-contact karate dojo and tell the instuctor he doesn't know how to fight. You've never encountered a legitimate black belt in Gojo-ryu, Kyokushin, or Shurin-ryu. They go through many real fights - meaning no gloves whatsover before attaining that. It takes 6 years of brutal training. I'm sure Andy Hug, doesn't know how to fight. You're a know nothing. Ask Bas Rutten about Karate. Or GSP. Full-contact Karate is the greatest standup fighting. It's been proven in K-1 and the UFC.
