I think it's either they are proud of the city they live in and come from, or they just want people to know that they live in the same city as the guy who just announced it on the microphone, and they are just looking for attention.  ;D

Mick Foley used to do that when he was commissioner in WWE, he loved the "cheap pops" as they call it over there. I dont know anyone who would brag about being from birmingham though, they have an inbred accent! ha ha
