anyone use dessicated liver tabs?
« on: January 30, 2007, 03:16:32 PM »
I know these are kinda "old school" but I take em. Wondering if i should buy another bottle because it seems like this is a pretty un-popular product nowadays

A great product with great benefits IMO.  I take 30 per night as an anti-catabolic measure.

If it works it works...I take them as a high quality protein source & to avoid taking a B-Complex vitamin.

I think Princess is talking about the Universal tablets. They're about the size of six or seven aspirins.

mine are a chain brand (Vitamin Shoppe).  Someone did an experiment and posted it on Dave Drapers' site about the ability of different brands to dissolve and if I recall correctly, the Universal tabs did not fare well.

After reading that I did an experiment with my Universal Tablets. I put a couple in a glass of water & they dissolved within two hours. I'm sure it'd be a lot faster with stomach acid & such.

Yeah the Beverly brand liver tabs are excellent combined with their mass amino, but a little pricey, its worth it

i prefer the universal uni liver ones and they are no hard to swallow.  just drink a lot of water with them and you are fine.  but, if you make the mistake of trying to chew them, your mouth will hate you for weeks to come.  the vitamin shoppe brand are way smaller in size and do not taste unbearable if you choose to chew them.

Since the small intestine is where the nutrients are "sucked" out, it is more beneficial to not have them broken down in the stomach....

I know the nutrients are absorbed in the small intestines. I guess I should have clarified my statement. I was addressing that the Universal Tablets didn't disolve well. They seemed to dissolve just fine in water.

Ok - good as I use them, I am to cheap to buy the beverly ones....I prefer DL tabs over amino's as DL tabs are actually cheaper plus have all the vits and iron etc....

Just curious, is there any research or studies that talk about the usefulness or advantages of DL tabs?  Is there any real advantages to taking DL tabs or are they just better replacement for aminos?  Thanks.

Here is a secondary description of a study which I was able to find-

http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=86412&perpage=30&pagenumber=2

"In a classic experiment, Dr. B. H. Ershoff demonstrated that liver extract was able to boost strength, endurance, performance, and resistance to stress and disease. In a nutshell here's how this occurred:

Dr. Ershoff took three groups of rats and fed them controlled diets for a twelve week period. Group one ate a basic diet fortified with vitamins and minerals. Group two ate as much as they wanted of the same diet plus B vitamins and brewer's yeast. Group three ate the basic diet but had 10% desiccated liver added to their rations.

Then the doctor placed the rats one by one into a drum of water, out of which they could not climb. Therefore, it was either swim or drown. The group one rats swam an average of 13.2 minutes before they all drowned. Group two, an average of 13.4 minutes. Group three, however, were still swimming at the end of two hours, at which time the experiment was concluded. Now either the group three rats had watched the fate of their counterparts very closely, or the liver had something to do with them swimming almost 10 times as long. As far as we know, no other supplement has even come close to liver in improving endurance."

Thanks for the link.  It appears from that experiment that they certinly have an impact on endurance.

here is one more posted on Vince Gironda's site:
http://www.ironguru.com/Home/tabid/637/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/81/NEW-DISCOVERIES-WITH-DESICCATED-LIVER.aspx

"Only within the last few years has the most important factor in desiccated liver been uncovered. It took 20 years before it was discovered. It was made by Dr. Minor J. Coon, Univ. of Michigan. He succeeded in isolating and testing a red protein pigment which was given the name of P-450. This pigment tested and retested in the laboratory proved it was able to perform all the functions of liver that had been previously tested on the vitamins but not found attributable to them.

P-450 is not water soluble, and that the drying process in concentration of desiccated liver from whole liver does not remove this newly discovered liver factor, but rather concentrates it.

P-450 is a catalyst which speeds up oxidation of chemicals important to human life and detoxifies poisonous substances that we breathe in and digest in food. Production of energy is a process of oxidation of glucose within the cell. This in turn produces fatigue toxins that gradually slow down energy. P-450 can improve the energy production process and also improve the ability of the body to detoxify the fatigue toxins. That is why the rats were able to continue on for so long.

Later tests on human children were made. The results were confirmed. The unidentified factor in liver is as important to human growth and endurance as it is to that of laboratory animals.
