As authorities in the US try to make sense of Anna Nicole Smith's final hours and what contributed to her death, new reports are emerging which could link the tragedy to complications arising from plastic surgery.
Contrary to initial speculation that Smith had died after consuming cocktail of drugs and alcohol at her hotel, Dr Joshua Perper, who conducted the autopsy, said there were no signs that she had been drinking on the day of her death.
''There was no scent of alcohol in her stomach lining, no residue, nothing," the Miami Herald quoted Perper as saying.
Sources at MSNBC say that Anna Nicole recently underwent breast surgery to repair one of her implants, and reports she exhibited "flu-like symptoms" over the few days before she died could actually have been signs of a deadly infection.
The former Playboy playmate was found by a member of her staff unresponsive and nude in her bed, with a sheet pulled over her face, MSNBC reports.
Adverse reactions to cosmetic plastic surgery can be serious, and cases of seizures, heart attacks, and high fevers leading to death have occurred on numerous occasions.
Anna had also been prescribed more than 10 different types of painkillers, and may have been taking excessive amounts to overcome a tolerance she had built up to their effects.
The combination of a heavy dose of pain medication and complications arising from surgery could have resulted in Anna Nicole's death.
