Ironman Prize Money

I didn't realize it was so little: 15K for the winner, 6K for second place.

There are bike messengers and dog walkers who make more than pro bbers

It's just supply and demand.  I'm not sure why bodybuilding is so unpopular in general and so weak as an economy.  Either the industry simply doesn't have much appeal, or it has been promoted poorly, or it is more monopolistic/top heavy than other free enterprise business models.

Or, the demand IS there, but the pay system is structured so that the promoters and sponsors bake in a disproportionate amount of sun while the guys are only getting 50% less shade than they got 15 years ago.

I know.  Peyton Manning won the Super Bowl last week and this past Sunday I saw him asking for change outside a diner.  I felt bad for the dude.

The past few years, I haven't been following pro-bbing as closely as I used to. Had you asked me to guess how much the winner made, I probably would've said 50K.

Does bodybuilding generate enough money to provide that much to the contest winners?  I think most pros just want to be jacked and compete just because.  Providing the pros will continue to compete for peanuts, they will continue to be paid peanuts.  Tell that to Shawn though...

most guys would do it for free.

until they unionize, they're practically doing that now.

bodybuilders will get their money. right after the greco-romans wrestlers get theirs. amateur boxers get theirs. mma fighters that dont fight in the big shows get theirs. strong men get theirs. powerlifters get theirs.   divers get theirs. judokas get theirs. rowers get theirs. swimmers get theirs. sprinters get theirs. triathletes get theirs. water polo players get theirs. and so on and so on.

I can't speak for all of those sports, but for the most part, aside from some UnderArmour and maybe some Nikes, those sports don't move product.  bodybuilding moves a lot of product.  And it's the likeness of these guys taking massive risks that sells these powders.  So yea, IMO they should get money before sports which generate less product sales with similar tix sales

My first post indirectly implied that I was suprised by how much bodybuilding has decreased in popularity. As a 40 year old, I remember the 80's. I used to go Night of Champions shows at a sold out Beacon Theatre, a venue that holds almost 4000. Now, they call the show the NY Pro and it's held at a 1000 seat venue.

Ironically, as the physiques have gotten freakier, the sport's popularity has decreased.

yeah maybe 10 outta 500 make money. same with most sports. unless you win you dont get shit. (and in most sports even IF you win you dont get shit) but in bodybuilding EVERYBODY is supposed to make a lot of money - winning or not.

how they figure this i dont know.

they are? what product might that be? most ads have either regular people or little known bodybuilders featured. the biggest winners in bodybuilding have the least appearances in advertising (dorian and ronnie)

and what are the massive risks? last i checked 99% of the bodybuilders were fine and healthy, some are now in their 50's and 60's.
