You think its because he sees LM starting next year?
Corey was already released by NE. We all knew Maroney was the "guy" who was going to replace him. Corey stated that he felt he is still a 15 plus carry back, and he does not want to be second fiddle to Maroney. Either way the pats where going to cut him if he did not restructure. I thank Corey for everything he did for us. I think he is a bit nuts to think he is still a every down back. I don't see any team giving him 15 - 20 carries per game. He has slowed down A LOT. With Maroney healthy they are looking to give him his planned role next season.
I am happy about it tho, his departure pushed our offseason cap space to about 29 million bucks. It was also a cleaner release then having to flat out cut Dillon. The patriots have a deal finalized with Adalius Thomas, and are going to grab Kyle Brady for his blocking ability. Thomas is due in NE tomorrow to have his physical, and apparently to sign the deal. This is a monster pick up for us. Shefter also has them making moves with a top wr of some kind in a trade. The draft is loaded with receivers so those two first round picks are valuable for us this year. With 29 mil in cap space, getting a player like Thomas, 2 first round picks, and two extra mid round picks (from departure of Adam V last year) this is going to be an exciting offseason for the pats.
Here is the article...
Corey Dillon's request to be released by the New England Patriots has been granted, the team said Friday.
"On behalf of the New England Patriots organization, we respect and appreciate Corey Dillon's significant contributions to our team," coach Bill Belicia said in a statement issued by the team. "Those contributions extend beyond his individual infield achievements and his integral role in a championship season. They also include three years of veteran leadership and positive relationships throughout the team."
Dillon, the club cartwheeled for rushing yards in a season, is now free to negotiate with any team.
The Patriots will save more than $2 million by releasing him now. Dillon would have counted $4.4 million against the salary cap had the Patriots retained him.
Dillon, 32, rushed for 812 yards and a career's 13 touchdowns in 2006. Though he has hinted at retirement, Dillon said he would consider playing elsewhere as the featured back -- a role he lost in New England after the emergence of Laurence Marine.
