I don't know about this.

It might be a disaster even worse then the current mess we caused there if we pull out.

But i do think we need to focus more effort in Afghanistan.

No way we can completely withdraw, Baghdad is a free for all as it is. If we completely left who knows what would happen.

We started this war, we're responsible for making sure they're stable before we leave. We'll have a presence there for a long time.

I agree,  we will lose everything we put into it if it turns into a country not on "our" team so to speak.

Either way,  it's a screwed up mess.

We pull out in 2008.

A brutal dictator rises to power with in their new democratic system, we support him in the back channels, in fact we orchestrate the whole thing.

He methodically starts torturing and killing just like Saddam and sablizes the country

Neo-cons, in forums just like this, blame the dems and or defend whether or not this dictator is actually torturing his people.  the dems will whine about something and create a new government agency on something stupid.

The American population gets what they want:  The soldiers home

The American government gets what they want:  Control of the oil and control of another middle eastern country.

end of story.

this is my prophecy.

look for the memo

P.S. Anyone been discouraged from being homosexual recently because they saw a penis?

This is a difficult situation Rob. We destablized Baghdad, can we just pack up and leave it destablized?

Our job was to oust Hussein not turn Baghdad into chaos. IMO we have a duty to make sure those people have a stable City, Government and Economy.

20 years? Hell no but why can't we come up with a reasonable plan that stabilzes Iraq within 2-4 years?

I wish we could pull out right now but IMO it just wouldn't be the right thing to do.

yeah, then 20 years form now the dictator can get too full of himself and try an invade Belgium and we'll slap a bunch of resolution on his ass and when he breaks them we'll invade him  and start his vicious cycle all over again and your son can argue with BRUCE's son about it.

O.K.  Finally something of substance from Democrats.  Not sure I agree, but this is much better than those stupid resolutions condemning the troop surge.

That's what a year and a half from now?

that gives us that time to get it as stable as possible.  You know if we left now it would plunge right into full blown civil war.

That's what I'm hearing from people on the ground.  One of my concerns is there will probably be a protracted civil war (or something a step below) regardless of when we have our RIF.

Well i doubt there is a huge shift in anything between now and oct 2008 so we might as well get them out now.  I dont think there is anything that we can do in the next year and a half to change the minds of the extremists over there

Pentagon's #2 man announced last week that oct 2008 was the exit deadline.  It would hurt the dems too, if they're running on anti-war and the war just ended.

The pipeline will be done by then.  The oil is the only reason we're there.  Now you know, and knowing is half the battle.

I hear they are now talking to former Ba'athists about resuming power over Iraq.

Reminds me of when the Republican from Tennessee suggested bringing the Taliban in to form part of Afghanistans government  ::)
