Mayweather-De La Hoya RESULT *SPOILER*
« on: May 06, 2007, 01:42:05 AM »

*SPOILER*

"Floyd Mayweather Jr. couldn't win over the crowd, or even his own father. All he could win was the only thing that really counted Saturday night, his fight against Oscar De La Hoya.

Boxing's bad boy beat the Golden Boy in one of the richest fights ever, using his superb defensive skills and superior speed to take a 12-round split decision and win the WBC 154-pound title in his first fight at that weight.

He didn't impress the pro-De La Hoya crowd that roared with every punch thrown by their hero, and even Floyd Mayweather Sr. thought his son had lost. But Mayweather landed the harder punches and landed them more often, and that was enough to eke out yet another win."

The punch stats spoke for themselves. I don't know what fight Floyd Sr. or the judge who had Oscar winning were watching. Floyd pretty much out classed him most of the fight. Oscar was standing flat footed and not effectively cutting off the ring. He was too slow to fight Mayweather in the center of the ring.

That wouldn't have been a very smart thing to do since Floyd has the superior hand speed and defensive skills.  I think Oscar's game plan was pretty good, he kept Floyd away from the center of the ring, and once Floyd was near a corner he would cut Floyd off, lead with a jab which would send Floyd into the ropes and he would flurry, Oscar's only problem is he couldn't keep that pressure on Floyd and he kinda gassed the last three or four rounds, if he could have kept that pace up the whole fight he would've beaten Fraud Gayweather.

True, he did fight a smart fight, but Oscar has always had stamina issues. If he is in a tough fight  that  goes past 8 or 9 rounds he fades, which is what happened in the Trinidad, Hopkins, and Mosely fights. I like Mayweather, but I don't think Oscar was the best test of his skills. Shane Mosely in my opinion is the only fighter that can push him to the limit. Not Margarito, Hatton, or anyone else. Shane would keep pressure on him for all 12 rounds. His hand speed is just as good as Floyd's, although he is not as illusive. That would be a tough fight to call.  I am a big fan of both these fighters, but I don't think it will ever happen.

I think Floyd is smart/cowardly enough to avoid fighting people who would beat him, and I agree, Mosely falls into that category.
