"Coach Jens Pulver continues to push his team in the gym, and Melendez clashes with him and assistant coach James Pena about the length of the workouts. Pulver gets in Melendez’ face, but lets his fighter know that he’s only pushing him to make him better and get to the semifinals. But it seems that Melendez doesn’t want to hear it, and later, he tells the coaching staff that he wouldn’t mind switching teams to train with Team Penn. Pulver lets Melendez know that while he appreciates his honesty, he’s not breaking the team up, and like that, all is well again on the Gold team.

There is none of that same drama on the other side of the ledger, as Maynard and his coach, BJ Penn, simply go at it in sparring to get the former All-American wrestler ready for his bout. And Penn rewards Maynard and the rest of the team by bringing UFC Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture into the gym to train with them. Ironically, Couture’s first color commentating gig was for the first Pulver-Penn fight, and he – like all MMA fans - is looking forward to the June 23rd rematch.

Back at the house, Cole Miller and Nate Diaz get into some good natured pranks and brawling with each other, capped off by Diaz dousing Miller with ice water and Manny Gamburyan joining in the fun by covering Miller with baby powder before the two called a truce.

With the fight approaching, Melendez asks his former opponent, Andy Wang, to help him cut weight, and though it was a struggle, he checked in at 156 and was cleared to fight. Maynard weighed in at 155.

Within eight seconds of the opening bell, Maynard got a takedown of Melendez and quickly got to his back. Moments later, Maynard sunk in a rear choke, but Melendez fought it off and got into his opponent’s guard. And though Melendez made it to his feet, he was put on his back again by the wrestler, who was controlling the action. Midway through the round, the two fighters stood and Melendez worked his standup game briefly before another takedown from Maynard. Again, Maynard controlled where the fight was going, but Melendez hung tough and made it through the round.

Down on the scorecards, Melendez tried to push the pace in round two to draw even and was able to land some hard punches before being taken down by Maynard, who was unstoppable virtually every time he shot. But after a quick scramble on the mat, Melendez was able to get the upper hand and land some punches before Maynard got back on top and bloodied his foe. With little over two minutes left, the two briefly stood before going back to the mat, and though Maynard was on top, Melendez worked his strikes effectively from the bottom. The success was short lived though, as Maynard was able to sink in a guillotine choke and earn the submission win before the fight went to the judges’ scorecards."
