Fruit & Vegetable Myth?
« on: June 11, 2007, 03:46:52 AM »
I recently started a more balanced diet. I remember starting off everybody always says:

"Eat as many veggies as you want but not fruit" or "Eat fruit before 12pm and only veggies afterwards"

What's the science behind this? Does it really matter? I've never heard of a man getting fat from fruit.

I can understand this if it's a question fruit making you hungry faster but being told to count fruit calories and not vegetable calories seems silly. Plus watermelon is a vegetable and tomato is a fruit but you can't eat the watermelon nonstop.

Any help is appreciated.

I dont really have anything useful to say other than a watermelon is a fruit, it has seeds.

Personally I dont really feel that eating fruit hampers my dieting, fruit is still relatively low in calories and does provide various vitamins etc that vegetables dont.
It hasn't helped...

Yeah, overall though why do people say "don't eat unlimited fruit but eat as many veggies as you can"?

Fruit contains sugar or rather forms of sugar.  So it messes with blood glucose levels and do contain more calories than many veggies

not really, letuce for example.  you can have a head of romaine and it'll be close to calories compared to a say one bana, but a banana has more claories and a lot more in terms of carbs/sugar, since lettuce has to impact carbs, any of the carbs are basically fibrous.

1 head of Romaine contains:

100 calories
8 grams of protein
727% of Vitamin A
250% of Vitamin C
34% Iron
21% calcium
44% potassium

Fruit will raise blood sugar fast and come crashing down, making you more hungry than before you ate the fruit. That is unless you eat a protein and/or fat with it to slow the sugar release. Eating fruits at night can store as bodyfat if your insulin levels get too high.

At night, we tend to slow down naturally so eating low glycemic foods like Vegies, will prevent you from storing bodyfat. Most green vegies are low in calories, very high in fiber and will speed metabolism up to try and digest the fiber in the vegies.

You are asking a question that is based on an individual trying to lose bodyfat, if that is not your goal, then eat all the damn bananas you want!  ;D
