UC Berkeley: Understanding Evolution
« on: September 20, 2007, 05:43:46 AM »
http://evolution.berkeley.edu/evosite/evohome.html

There has been a lot of debate about evolution on here lately, and some people seem under the delusion that the Bible actually has an element of scientific truth to it, or that evolution is "just another theory" on equal footing with the talking-snake theory.

This site from one of the world's top universities provides a primer on evolution.

Before you try and find holes in modern science, start by educating yourself a little. Surely the world's best scientists know a bit more than you.  ;D

Funny cause all proof of evolution are out there, yet creationist keep talking about the bible(the existence of god itself, no proof) who do you believe? science with proof or a story from left and right with absolutely no evidences and non sense
are you delusional?

What's up, Frenchie?  I like French red wine, French bread and French fries.  How do you guys stay so thin and healthy?

Anyway, where is "all proof of evolution"?

Show me some proof that macro-evolution is just a long sequence of micro-evolutionary events.  Can you do that?

How about showing us some proof that humans evolved from an ape like species?

columbusdude, thanks for another great, informative website!  An infantile, "virus infected", ignorant Christian like me can greatly benefit from such educative website.

While going through this website, I was reminded of something that I had learned before.  Let me ask you about it.

If evolution is a fact and can stand on its own two...four little feet, then why do "real scientists" have to pull dishonest crap like this?  Why is this dishonest crap still in biology textbooks today and taught to kids?  Can you say "indoctrinating"?

Quoting from the website you provided above:

"The evolutionary study of embryos reached a peak in the late 1800s thanks primarily to the efforts of one extraordinarily gifted, though not entirely honest, scientist named Ernst Haeckel"

"Unfortunately, Haeckel, apparently in his enthusiasm to make his point, modified the drawings of these embryos to make them appear more alike than they actually were. These fudged sketches (or versions derived from them) have appeared in many biology textbooks since then"

"Haeckel was so convinced of his Biogenetic Law that he was willing to bend evidence to support it"

This is what you call "good science"?

Can you provide links to your quotations in the future? Thanks :)

And see? this post proves that your mind is infected by a mind virus that tells you to attack science always. UC Berkeley put up a great resource to share scientific information with people, and your first instinct is to try and dig holes in the whole thing. You would have been better off starting by learning from that website instead of continuing on your deranged obsession with "macroevolution."

What a way to dodge the question.  Aren't you going to answer my question?

You provided the link.  Didn't you go through the website and read it before you posted it?  Don't tell me that this information took you by surprise or caught you off guard.  I expected you to have known this already.

Wow,  that's amazing how someone would fake drawings to make their assumptions into fact.

It only goes to show you that science doesn't have all the answers.

mmmmmm that was a good breakfast :)

OK.. your quotes show that some guy wanting to make a name for himself and maybe advance his career was dishonest, and "fudged" some pictures. He was found out. Sucks to be him!

How does that negate the rest of modern science? How does it negate the fossil record? The overwhelming molecular evidence? You mean to tell me that ALL scientists around the world are involved in some major cover up? Or that all the brilliant minds at the world's major universities have been fooled?

That's all you got? You dig up one (or 20) dishonest scientist (s) and say AHHHAA SCIENCE, GOTCHA?

The sweet thing about science (as opposed to religious "miracles") is that a scientific experiment can always be replicated. So you, my dear friend, don't have to "believe" anything. You can always go to a laboratory and conduct molecular experiments yourself... if you know what you're doing, of course.

Now, when you can disprove any of the theories of modern science, you won't have to post on Getbig any more. You will be given a Nobel prize and lots of distinguished ressearch positions. Until then, modern science knows more than you do :)

Okay, so you think he did it to make a name for himself and maybe advance his career. Thank you!  That answered part of my question.

The other part if my question is:   Why is this dishonest crap still in biology textbooks today and taught to kids?

And now I have another question.  Why did you reply to this question as if you didn't already know about this.  Have you never heard of Haeckel and this stunt he pulled?  Did you study his drawings in school and thought that they were real?

How does that negate the rest of modern science? How does it negate the fossil record? The overwhelming molecular evidence? You mean to tell me that ALL scientists around the world are involved in some major cover up? Or that all the brilliant minds at the world's major universities have been fooled?

It doesn't.  I am not trying to negate modern science, but let's teach kids the truth and not this dishonest stuff.  And I do not believe that most scientists are dishonest.

That's all you got? You dig up one (or 20) dishonest scientist (s) and say AHHHAA SCIENCE, GOTCHA?

Personally, I don't believe that most scientists out there are dishonest.  But it goes to show that sometimes we just don't know.  It is unrealistic to expect the entire population to go to the lab and test every possible theory out there.  So we assume and hope that scientists are being honest.  Again, look at today's biology textbooks still showing fake drawings produced by an 1800s dishonest scientist.  How is that acceptable?

No biology textbook I ever studied from or read used that guy's work. No book should. If you find such a book being used at your local schools, you must write your school board and express your concerns.

That would begin by not teaching them religion :) Think of all the world's mutually exclusive religions. All of them are taught to defenseless kids as fact. Since they negate each other, they can't all be true. In fact, at most one (that's either one or zero) is true. The rest are false.

None of them have any real corroborating evidence. Therefore, I propose we stop indoctrinating kids in religion. But that's another topic. :)

Yes, and you trust the review process. Any piece of research is reviewed and tested and re-tested and replicated independently before it is published.

However, if a person wants to negate a widely-accepted piece of science, they should do it in the lab, or they will end up making laughable claims like our friend "OneTimeHard."
