U.S. military cemetery running out of space
« on: September 21, 2007, 09:26:07 AM »
OVERLAND PARK, Kansas (Reuters) - A Kansas military cemetery has run out of space after the burial of another casualty of the Iraq war, officials said on Thursday.
"We are full," said Alison Kohler, spokeswoman for the Fort Riley U.S. Army post, home of the 1st Infantry Division.
U.S. Sens. Sam Brownback and Pat Roberts, both Kansas Republicans, on Thursday sent a letter to William Tuerk, the under secretary for memorial affairs at the Department of Veterans Affairs, urging for full funding for a new cemetery for Fort Riley.
"While a new cemetery would not be completed in time to alleviate this situation immediately, it is vitally important," Roberts and Brownback, a Republican presidential candidate, said in their letter.
"We truly owe our military members a debt of gratitude and the least we can do is provide them with an honorable burial ground," the senators wrote.
Since the 2003 beginning of the war in Iraq, Fort Riley has lost 133 soldiers and airmen, though not all are buried in the Fort Riley cemetery. Sgt Joel Murray, who died September 4 in Iraq, took the last available plot, said Kohler.
Fort Riley can bury bodies on top of other bodies if family members want to share a plot, said Kohler.

Chris Matthews mentioned on WEd that we should hang an Exxon-Mobil sign over the cemetary, after guests admitted that from this point fwd, all American deaths are for the procurement of oil.

Man I feel guilty laughing since it is such horrible thing, you know I have no feelings for the Soldiers and not because I disagree with the war in and of itself but simply because I'm don't believe what the church is preaching and have my own theories what happens after you die, I think they have it behind them but the once that are left behind those are the once I pitty.. and I have no problem imagine what it must be like to get the letter or what ever they send the families... all I imagine is if my girl would be serving and died in that shithole.
Horrific.

Having been stationed at Riley, most recently for the past two years while I was deployed overseas, they have been hit very hard. The Cemetary is tiny and nobody anticipated the number of burials they would have to do from one post, not the amount of folks that wanted their loved ones buried at the Fort. Most people want them close by so they can visit.

Are they not allowed to have them burried were they want them to be burried?

U get an Officer and the Chaplin for notification...I've done 1 so far...it sucks.  And then u get another Officer to help with eveything else and he's there to make sure u get the insurance, the belongings, makes ur arrangements for the funeral etc. He's there until everything is done and u don't need anything more from Uncle Sam. Soem take over a year. I've done one of those as well.

Funny thing is, people here are still screaming the war is about setting up democray in Iraq.

I mock those of you who still say that.  You are stupid.

Exxon-Mobil.  That's what its about.  Didn't they have a fvcking 10 billion dollar QUARTER last year?  broke every earnings record in mankind's history.

U can be buried where ever u like. But most of the folks buried prior to 911 where from the 1800's. Some WW1/2 but folks like to be able to visit. If ur not from Kansas, its not easy to see ur soldier.

Speaking of, where is beach bum?   He used to be my favorite poster.  Everytime I showed evidence of US imperialism and anything but "we bombed them to give them the gift of democracy, and it had nothing to do with oil", he'd counter with something I said about Laci Peterson.

BB is the ultimate red herring guy.  ANd now that everyone and their fed researve boss is admitting the war was about oil, I want to hear his take on it.
