Actually the earth did spin around every few hours.
As the moon was a lot closer then we had tides a few hundred feet high that moved hundreds of Ks inland.
And winds hurricane strong all the time.
The tug of the moon slowed the earths rotation down with time sorta like a centrifugal brake.
As the moon moves away at about an inch a year the tides became more like we know today.
Early earth was a tough place for any living organism to be.
