Which of these statements sound elitist or irritating to you?
« on: October 05, 2007, 06:58:04 AM »

Assume that someone made these statements to you and they were 100% true.

Which ones sound elitist or irritating to you and why?

1)  I have the Holy Spirit living in me and you do not.

2)  I am a multi-millionaire and you are not.

3)  I have a new Kelly bag and you do not.

4)  I just had a glass of water and you did not.

The number 1.

Anyone making such a statement seems slightly misinformed about the Holy Spirit "thing".

IMO, we cannot say for certain who has or who does not, since you never know who is a liar.

Extreme case: Someone proclaiming to be Jewish, could be lying, and in his own mind admit the Trinity.

The same thing could be said for anyone claiming to be Christian: they could be lying, and not have the faith.

Words don't mean a thing.

Thanks for responding OzmO!  May I ask why you found the first 3 elitist or irritating but not the 4th?

2, 3, and 4 differ from 1 in that they are easily verified.

1 is unverifiable, so the person who says it cannot have evidence of it, and cannot know it. It assumes the existence of an invisible, intangible wizard, and claims it is "living" inside of oneself.

OK thanks Coldude.  But let's just assume for a moment that all statements were 100% true.  Which ones (if any) would you find elitist or irritating?

I wouldn't say any are irritating. If 2, 3, and 4, are true, i.e. verified statements of fact, then why would they bother me?!

As for 1, I cannot assume it is 100% true since it cannot be verified. If someone said that to me, I would be somewhat amused, then walk away as they continue to shout on the sidewalk and hold up their cardboard signs of "The end is nigh" or "Worship God or else He will KILL you"...

1.  We all have the holy spirit living in us.  It's whether or not we chose to use it or let it guide us is the question.

1-2-3

All suggest that the person who has it is better because of it.

So you could say that about #4.

All of them.  Anytime someone talks about what they have that others don't it's elitist and irritating.  I'd rank them as you listed them.

Can someone curse God and at the same time have the Holy Spirit living inside them?

that would suggest god leaves them.  God is always with you no matter what.....it's up to you listen.

Ever heard the saying:  When the student is ready the teacher appears? or God helps those who helps them selves? or you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink?

(you can however, ride the horse real hard and make him real thirsty  ;D)

Life has a way of doing that to you doesn't it?   And no matter where you are or what you've done, God is there for you and will give you strength if you open your heart and ask.
