Evander . . .
« on: October 14, 2007, 10:25:29 AM »
Evander did not embarass himself last night although he fell short in his quest for a fifth havyweight title.  However, he displayed a symptom of many aging fighters-- he fought one punch at a time.  Gone were the impressive combinations that marked his prime.  He hurt the Russian several times, but it was always one punch and then stop, a problem if you do not have one punch knockout power.  As he fought, when Evander would tag the Russian, I pictured Evander of old who would then leap in with vicous punch after savage punch.  That man is gone, and in his place, a solid, but unspectacular run-of-the mill heavyweight.

Good point.  But Mike always had the "puncher's chance" because he did not depend on combinations to achieve KOs.  I'm thinking of Roy Jones Jr. as a comparison, who depended on athleticism and speed to dominate and when those things vanished, he became average.  Meanwheile, you look historically, the big punchers are able to go into the later years (George Foreman, Jersey Joe Walcott, etc.).

Poor guy.  He was a good fighter.  Fighting is all he can do.  His brain is going to be mush if he doesn't quit.

Unbelievably, he still wants to keep fighting for his "quest" to unify the titles. he's an aging warrior no doubt, but when YOUR trainer and the trainer of your opponent are saying its time for you to hang up the gloves...well dammit you might want to start listening. hell if i were to start a death pool right now..he'd be 3rd on my list...he's moved from cruiserweight to heavyweight and has kicked ass in all of them. what else does he have to prove? ??? he needs someone else to step in and just tell him he can't fight no more because there's one thing to be on a "quest" and another thing to be obsessed...

some of the greatest fights i have seen involved Evander. He was great in his prime. it seems as if he has nothing to look forward to in life if he cant box. he is so determined to unify the belts. he should just relax and retire and enjoy his money and family. Lord knows his house is large enough.
