Elk Meat
« on: December 11, 2007, 07:25:56 AM »
Does anyone have any experience with Elk Meat? This is meat from the free ranging Elk in the Montana mountains.

My girls dad hunts and takes people on expeditions. They usually have way too much meat and wind up donating some. Being a bodybuilder, he should be donating to me and said he would send some. I just have never ate any so any hunters out there??? Thanks!

I didn't get it from hunting, but I have purchased Elk meat (wither at Whole Foods or Bristol Farms, I can't remember).  I used ground Elk in a burrito, which tasted great.  The steaks were good too.

No experience with it, but I'd take as much as I could get my hands on  ;D  Leaner than beef and I'm sure tastier and better nutritionally.  Ted Nugent is a big hunter and he has a wild game cookbook out there.  It's called something like "Kill It & Grill It"

Rock on Sister!!  8)

Love Ted, forgot all about that...I read he had that cookbook.

Looked up the nutritional info:

4 oz of game Elk
8 g. Fat
26 g. protein
0 carbs.

Might be a bit on the dark side maybe....regardless, its FREE PROTEIN!!! ;D

We don't have a big elk population here in Tennessee, and it's not legal to hunt the few we have yet.  I do deer hunt and can tell you that deer meat is leaner than beef.  I'm sure elk meat is better from a nutritional standpoint.

??? Bear?  hmmm... wouldn't that be fatty?  For some reason, it doesn't sound tastey.

I was being a smart ass....we had this discussion over at the steroid board and some of the guys have had bear, possum, snake, squirel, peacock, etc..

So my princess, you are right, would not be tasty to this kid!

I was just thinking about weird meats before you posted that.  Like whale  ???  has anyone had whale?
Squirrel  ::)  seems like a lot of work for very little meat  ;D  like a cornish hen ~ why bother.  Rattlesnake?  okay - had it once  :-\ novelty  Aligator = same.   Racoon ~ YUCK never tried it and can't imagine it being any good ~ they eat garbage.       ??? what else

I've had the following that would probably be considered weird meats:
Rattlesnake
Squirrel
Turtle
...probably a couple others but I'm so damn tired I can't think clearly right now.

Oh yea I had a Bald Eagle egg omelet one time...  ;D

Bald Eagle Egg omlette?? That is the most unique next to AJ's peacock so far.

Princess, go the locker room at the steroid board and read what some of these guys have eaten!!! No whale yet but my mom used to make a mean Game Hen. As a kid that was plenty of protein but now would need mom, dads and my own.

Elk is really similar to venison. It's really lean so it's best served on the rare side. Just do a search for any venison recipes on like foodandwine.com and you should be good.
