Ron Paul on the Issues
« on: December 27, 2007, 10:11:13 PM »
Spent some time looking at Ron Paul's website.  Here are some issues I like and some I find objectionable:

- Withdraw from the UN = bad

- "End birthright citizenship" = bad

- “Working Americans like lower taxes. So do I. Lower taxes benefit all of us, creating jobs and allowing us to make more decisions for ourselves about our lives.

Whether a tax cut reduces a single mother’s payroll taxes by $40 a month or allows a business owner to save thousands in capital gains taxes and hire more employees, that tax cut is a good thing. Lower taxes allow more spending, saving, and investing which helps the economy — that means all of us."  = OUTSTANDING   :)

- Abolishing the DOE and returning control to the states = good

- Support for the environment = good

- No socialized healthcare = good

- Reigning in the FDA, particularly when it comes to supplements = terrific

- Promotion of home schooling = great

- Respect and protection of unborn children = consistent

- "The Tax Free Tips Act of 2007 will exempt tips from federal income and payroll taxes." = very good

- Opposition to national ID = ambivalent

- Overturn Patriot Act = alarmist

- Government's role in ending racism = indecipherable

- "Imposing any tax on Social Security benefits is unfair and illogical. In Congress, I have introduced the Senior Citizens Tax Elimination Act (H.R. 191), which repeals ALL taxes on Social Security benefits, to eliminate political theft of our seniors’ income and raise their standard of living." = good

- Second Amendment views (basically anything goes) = extremist

- Immediate withdrawal of troops from Iraq = mistake

http://www.ronpaul2008.com/issues/

Overall, I think he's okay on the issues.

BB, I love to rag on you because I think you lack any opinion other than what the Whit house Press Pulpit tells you to think.  But it's good to see you actually looking at the issues.

Ron Paul has a big following because his policies often go beyond partisan politics to things that are BIGGER than Dem vs repub.  While Mitt and Rudy are bickering in front of a televised audience about which one technically employed less illegals in their own life... or when Hilary and Obama are trading press releases on which one of them plays dirtier politics...(both fights are small divisive thing) Ron Paul stays above the fray, focusing on things that bring people TOGETHER.

I love to ignore you because you have a crush on me and follow me around like a rabid Chihuahua.  Just so we're clear on where we stand.   :)

Ozark what about just deporting the parents?  Perhaps if we enforce our current laws and mothers risk being separated from their kids, maybe they wouldn't risk coming across the border simply to have a baby?

that makes no sense.   Ripping families apart or forcing US citizens to leave the country is not the answer.

The answer is to get rid of all the illegals without US born children first  AND prevent future illegal immigration.

We wouldn't be forcing a U.S. citizen to leave.  We'd be forcing the illegal alien parent to leave.  We give them a Hobson's choice.  That could serve as a deterrent to future illegals who come here just to have babies.

Our current immigration enforcement is an abject failure and has been for decades.

We'd be creating a condition where they'd have to separate from their families or leave.  Same thing as just forcing them.

I agree our current system is a failure.

But this is not the answer.

Well we could just keep doing what we're doing, which isn't working.  Have you been to Southern California lately?

Yes, I've been there recently, but our options aren't boiled down to 2.

I strongly agree it's a problem, but i do not agree on how to handle natural born citizens by giving them that choice.

We need to start with the basic illegal immigrant who does not have kids.   Get rid of all those, prevent others from entering illegally, and we then have a huge part of the problem handled.

Deporting childless illegals will help, but from the looks of it (my view anyway), there are a slew of illegals with kids.  What we're currently doing is rewarding people who come here illegally.

BeachBum, I don't think that is enough,
I know their are some parents who are here as legal immigrants who get pregnant, and have a child here,  with no intentions of doing this for a free pregnancy, and free benefits, paid for by you and me.     But this is the exception, as their are too many pregnant woman coming across the border currently ,  they start traveling here just as soon as they find out they are pregnant, knowing that not only will they get to give birth here, and have you and me pay for it, but that their child will be a citizen, and more than likely get free benefits for life. And something must be done.

This great Country is a better place because of legal immigrants coming here, to work hard, and make their dreams come true.
sadly it is the illegal immigrants, who are causing problems not only for us citizens , but they are causing problems for legal Immigrants
as well.

enough is enough.

Ron Paul is going nowhere..he might push the agenda and the questions being asked but thats about it. I will say that since BB went to his site that is reflects that his ideas are being heard. I agree on most of what BB posted...except , the anchor baby issue. If ur illiegal and have a kid here..its illiegal to...pack ur shit and go. Canada changed their laws and we should to. Pulling out of Iraq....we're winning so pulling out as a large force will happen. We can't pull outa the UN but we outa be dues free, since we seem to clean up all their messes.

I like the idea of limiting the citizenship birth rule to those whose parents are here legally.  Makes sense to me.

here's the problem.

you have what, 11 or 12 million illegals?

Their kids are considered legal.  So how many children citizens of illegals do we have here now?  20 mil EASILY (that means each family has 1.8 kids... I'm sure it's a tad higher).

You can't send 20 million kids home.  WOuld cause a refugee crisis, mexico would shut their borders, you'd have a worldwide lense on the thousands dying in the desert.  It's too big now.  The US cannot ship the kids back.

And you can't send the parents back and leave the kids here.  Because most parents aren't going to leave their kids.  THey'll all hide, and they'll likely resort to violence at the thought of leaving their 1-month old.

The first thing you do if you're fat, is to stop overeating, so you don't get any fatter.

We need to change the citezenship law, so from this day forward, no more birthright citizenship.
We are not talking about taking away anyones current citizenship. Just changing the law, so it comes to a stop.
As mentioned earlier, Canada has done so, along with other Countries.

enough is enough

i'm down for changing it for all future births.  I just don't think we can throw out 2, 10, and 17 year olds already here.

Ex post facto

Latin for "from a thing done afterward." Ex post facto is most typically used to refer to a law that applies retroactively, thereby criminalizing conduct that was legal when originally performed. Two clauses in the US Constitution prohibit ex post facto laws: Art 1, § 9 and Art. 1 § 10.
