Yes. Daniel Day-Lewis as "Bill the Butcher" MADE that movie. Without him, it'd perhaps be average at best. I actually rooted for him in this movie, and while he was cast as a bad guy, he really wasn't. It takes quite a character and acting skill to portray an antagonist to actually be seen as a potential good guy. The vast majority of movie villains are showns as downright evil just the for the sake of being evil or, if not that, then are shown to be just be tragic figures who seek to be sympathized with.
