It won't be a dull year
« on: February 19, 2008, 08:10:50 PM »
Until tonight I've been chilly towards the Obama movement. [And - like him or not - that's the power he has now.]  But tonight I'm daring to hope. That maybe next year won't be darker than the last.

You know that old white men are having drinks in clubs, fighting a touch of the indigestion they've been having more lately. Twirling the ice cubes in their crystal glasses, chuckling vaguely about this uppity young fellow everyone's hot-and-bothered about...

But lone crazed snipers are so Sixties. And why pass up the chance for a really big power grab at the moment of maximum receptivity. Don't forget these guys take Viagra in time for the new episode of 24 so they can beat their withered meat during the torture scenes...

So maybe they'll just go ahead and arrange for some Arab nut on the CIA payroll to set off a suitcase nuke at the Academy Awards. They always resented being socially snubbed by movie stars in favor of "the cool kids" anyway. [They'll find a "suicide note" later in which Ahmed boasts how he shall become the instrument of Allah in punishing those who mock His law.] And while Sherri Shepherd recites a poem about Jennifer Lopez's beautiful twin unborn babies being with Jesus in Heaven now, the White House press secretary makes a brief announcement that primary elections have been "temporarily suspended due to terrorist threat levels" and then leaves without taking questions.

Or maybe the Diebold boys promised to get it right this time and the results in November will find a small but clear popular and electoral vote victory for John McBush. Chris Matthews will explain to us that, when it came down to brass tacks, people realized that they have many terrible things to be afraid of and they trusted that man to protect them. Exit polls will again prove unreliable - as they started being suddenly for the first time back in 2000. Kinda like all these bees dying off sudden. Hard to explain a thing like that.

Or maybe they'll fuck up like Musharraf and find that the deck proved to be not as rigged as was necessary. And in the end Obama proves, if not King Arthur, at least a less oppressive form of tyrant.

However it plays out... it won't be a dull year.
