And, even in the worst of times (and times have been much tougher) there were still people who have survived and thrived...based upon choices they make as individuals.
You can choose to be rich. You can choose to be poor.
These are some facile observations. You simply cannot choose to be rich and poof there it is. Talent, intelligence, education, social/economic environment, luck etc. all play a role in one's personal development. If personal effort was all it took for success, then we'd have millions of millionaires.
Ultimately, YOU are a product of your actions (Or, inactions).
Many can afford health insurance, but choose to buy furniture or expensive cars.
If you don't agree with this logic (I agree with some of yours), then you are an irrational fellow who is just trying to incite others.
Many cannot afford health insurance. Many employers cannot afford to even offer a health insurance program.
If you want to penalize irresponsible management of fiscal affairs, I suggest you write a letter of complaint to the President. He's the guy that's made the US into a welfare queen living on maxed out credit cards. The US borrows from Red China and spends like no tomorrow.
