Could a quote from Nietzsche explain Obama's popularity?
« on: March 12, 2008, 07:03:43 AM »
Nietzsche had said that had said that "Extreme positions are not succeeded by moderate ones, but by contrary extreme positions."

Well one extreme position was Bush, and with Obama  buzzword or "change", the nation has seen him as a "contrary extreme position". He might not be the the correct position, but does his popularity proof this quote correct?

No.

Otherwise Kerry would have won in 2004.

kerry was Dubya's blueblooded cousin.

when you saw him windsurfing or hanging out on his estate, you didn't see a polar opposite of bush.  rather, another flavor.

when you look at obama, you see a very intelligent man from outside of the DC tradition.

Obama is way more anti-bush than kerry ever was.

That seems more like differences in image than positions.  But i see your point.

IMO more people vote on image than positions.  It's hard for me to explain the diff between Hil, Obama and mccain's proposed fiscal policies, and I live politics all day.  I'm betting Joe Sixpack has no clue, but votes on who they'd most like to hang out with, and who his dad would have voted for.

nah, the republicans sued to prevent the Ohio paper votes from being counted in order to verify the outcome.

I'm sure the 1 in 50,000 statistical chance that Bush had more votes (huge exit polling anomaly) came true.   I remember back then, finding out about it... I was a POS so of course I laughed... "who cares if we cheated, we won!"  I'm sure a few of you still feel that way today, and its understandable.  We're all immature and stupid at some time.

Kerry was and still is a pussy.  I'm glad he didn't win.

If Obamas success is due to his promise of change it might be having more success than Kerry just because we've endured another 3+ years of the Bush nightmare.

I think at this point the vast majority of the country is desperate for anything that promises to be different from our current course

i agree.  You can feel it.  Everywhere I go, people talk about Obama or hilary... they have war fatigue and 80% of people just don't believe much of what bush says.

hell, 2 weeks ago, bush told us we don't have a recession coming.  Buffet and most analysts disagree wholeheartedly.

I dont understand the Camp mccain people who believe people (who will be much poorer come november) will vote for 4 more years of the same.  Do you un-der-stand?  Mccain says bush fiscal plan will stay in place.  If you like the economy and the direction it's going, vote mccain, it's that simple.

As Bill Maher said - we have "fuck up" fatigue.

This is what I was getting at...does this prove Nietzsche correct?
